Why are we paying so much?

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious or perhaps in naive but as the title suggests why are we paying so much? I'm paying a fortune for my 2000/500 connection. Just returned from a trip to a few SEA countries. My Airbnb in HCMC had a 1000/1000 connection and when I checked the providers price I was shocked that it's around $16 a month! The same provider offers a 10gbit/10gbit connection for $84. In Singapore I saw them also advertising 10gbit/10gbit for $30 SGD per month. I just can't believe in 2026 we're still paying a fortune for a decent connection when you compare to what other countries have on offer. I guess we have no competition in this country so they can charge whatever they like. Apologise for the rant, just a little pissed at the state of things.

Has anyone been ISP hopping to keep the super sweet $30-40 discount for 6 months?

Hey folks,

Looking at the cost of living and want to safe a few dollars. I have thought I could save $30-40 per month changing ISPs for the new Signup discount. has anyone done that rolling? And how much pain Have you endured by it?

Currently on 250/100 for $99 with Superloop because it was the ”free upgrade” from the 100/40 plan I was on.

Edit: I’m in HFC, and content with 100/40 or thereabouts, my only requirements are to not be behind CGNAT I don’t need a static IP and I have a modem & Mesh arragement I’m pretty happy with.

Can Two Internet Providers Charge You at the Same Time Through the Same Modem?

Hi all,

I wanted to know if it’s possible for two different internet service providers to provide service through the same Wi-Fi modem at the same time.

I switched internet providers around 8 months ago. I didn’t say anything to my previous provider because I assumed the service would automatically disconnect and cancel once I switched over (similar to how it works when you change phone companies).

However, I recently received an email from a debt collection company advising that my account with my previous internet provider is overdue.

They mentioned that I owe around $1,000.

But I switched providers a long time ago and have been getting billed by and paying my new provider ever since.

At the same time, my old provider was apparently still charging me as if I was still using their service.

I’m very confused...

Is this possible? Or should I dispute it?

No more dynamic IPs with Superloop?

Just switched back to Superloop this morning. First thing I always do with a new service is call to disable CG-NAT, only this time I got told their policy has changed and that they can no longer offer a dynamic IP. Anyone else experienced this? They were happy to disable it for my mate 5 months ago…

Seems like every year fewer and fewer providers offer this as an option.

Edit: for context, the agent first did it no questions asked, then called back and said it's no longer possible, and disabled it. Your mileage may vary, spent an hour calling different support staff, and they all seem to disagree on their current policy. I finally found one who would disable it without calling back :)

West Belconnen - March 2029?!

Hey folks,

I'm in West Belconnen ACT, and have been waiting for FTTP since at least 2023. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about the ETA. Surely it's not actually going to be another two and a half years more before I get FTTP?

Also, my service gets at most 45 Mbps, which is well less than what's possible with 'fast' FTTN plans. As such, I'm on a 50 Mbps plan. Yet, in order to be able to trigger an upgrade, I need to be on a 100 Mbps or higher plan. Do I change my plan manually to the higher plan, trigger the update, and change it again once switched over? Or is there an allowance for services that can't physically achieve higher speeds? I don't want to switch and pay extra for something I can't use, but I also don't want to miss out on that free upgrade.

Why couldn't they just have gone with fibre to begin with?!!!!

Can't figure out the cabling within my nbn cabinet

Hi, I've just bought a house and can't figure out the cabling as my previous house didn't have a cabinet or setup that looked like this

I get that a cable needs to run from the top box to the bottom, but where does it go? If I connect it to one of the points with the black part, I only get a connection in that corresponding room.

How can I set it up to get each room connected?

Many thanks

Consistently Bad Ping with Optus (Not worried about speed)

Trying to play online games with Optus is a horror. When it works (off-peak times) it is fine, it sits at 22ms ping consistently and I am happy with that. However, it will very often say that I am averaging about 30-40ms of ping but it actually feels like I am staggering between 20ms and 200/300ms for brief periods.

I feel like what is happening is that Optus has oversold their capacity and are briefly making it shit for each person 1 at a time for a very brief second or 2 so they can cover up the fact that they oversold their bandwidth and it only affects people who play competitive games and not their broader customer base.

I don't see us being the issue because we are in Brisbane, with HFC, changed modems, changed routers, still using modern ethernet cords to connect throughout the house, not downloading anything, not using VPNs, and its good in offpeak times so its clearly not us.

Its like they are flipping a switch and god forbid I cant stay up til midnight or wake up at 4am to start playing games. It sucks and its unacceptable to pay for this service.

Unexpected NBNCo response to Complex Multi-Dwelling MDU Upgrade Application

Our complex of 8 townhouses voted at the AGM last month to apply for the full fibre upgrade. Our strata manager sent in the application last week with me as the local contact. Today I received a pretty confusing response from NBNCo…

“After reviewing the details, it appears that one of the units in your property is already eligible for a fibre upgrade, and an order has been placed. However, the order is currently on hold as your building is considered complex and requires remediation works along with a bespoke design to enable fibre upgrades across all units within the property. As part of this planned remediation activity, all premises within your building/complex will become eligible for individual fibre upgrades. Based on the current update, the expected completion date for these works is the end of June 2026.”

This struck me as strange. So I looked up all 8 units on Leaptel’s & ABB’s address checker. Sure enough, units 6 & 7 both say they are eligible for the “new development offer”, while the 6 other units only mention FTTN. This was not the case a year ago when we first moved in. Back then, all 8 units only showed FTTN as being available.

All units are connected to the NBN via the same MDU at the front of the complex. So how is it possible that two have become eligible for the free fibre upgrade?

When I searched the LukePrior map when we first moved in our complex was tagged as “Tech Change Status: MDU Complex Eligible To Apply (FTTP). Program Type: Customer-initiated N2P MDU Complex” It still says the same today.

We all received a notice of future works from Ventia a few weeks ago, before the AGM. Presumably, that’s the FTTP “remediation and bespoke design” mentioned by NBNCo in the email. But the works notice from Ventia made no mention of FTTP upgrades. It just said they were coming out to fix the broken MDU cabinet door and remove some superfluous racks from inside the cabinet after carrying out general hardware inspections in our area.

Does anyone understand what’s going on? Is our complex really getting a free MDU upgrade without going through the typical complex multi-dwelling application process? Or is this some big understanding on NBBVo’s part that’s going to result in us waiting months for nothing?

FTTP problem

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP, but I have a bit of an issue. The existing telephone cable doesn't come from the side of the house outside then inside, it is channelled straight inside into the wall cavity. The NBN technician said the only solution was to cut a big hole in the gyprock so they could access the entry point, which he somewhat located with a signal trace thing with the modem.

I just wanted to know if anybody else has/had this issue and what was your solution. Is the only solution to cut a big hole in the wall or is there any other way?

Just for a bit of info, it's a two-story house on a battle axe block sharing a driveway.

2 weeks no NBN

Hi all,

I am looking for what else I can do in regard to not having our NBN connected for over two weeks. We have rung our provider multiple times and lodged a complaint, our provider keeps telling us it’s NBN’s problem NBN keeps telling us to talk to our provider. We had a tech scheduled to come out and they were a no show. We were told the NBN tech would call following the missed appointment and we never received a call, or a new date. I am incredibly frustrated as I work from home and either have to hotspot or find somewhere with public wifi both of which are terribly inconvenient. Does anyone have any advice on what else we can do?

2nd HFC point

Can a house have a 2nd HFC point? I assume so, since back in the Foxtel days you could have 2 tv points.

Is there any way to get NBN to install a new point or do I need to hire a private cabler?

Optus speed downgrade and they lied

I noticed after I upgraded my PC to Windows 11 it was saying 50Mbps connection instead of 500Mbps.

Checked with Optus themselves and they said there was nothing wrong at my location.

They have changed the speed for all plans and lied to my face is what grates.

Ethernet Ports / Comms box

Hey gents, I just moved into a new property that been built recently. It’s a two-storey house with 4 bedrooms upstairs, and 3 of them have data ports. I’ve been searching around the house for a communications box/cabinet but haven’t been able to find one anywhere, except for the security system box in the master bedroom (found out it was the alarm box the hard way).

A few days ago, I had an NBN technician come out and install the FTTP NBN box inside and outside the property. The connection itself isn’t active yet because there’s a blockage in the street that another tech apparently needs to sort out before service can be established.

My question is: could these data ports support Ethernet? And if so, since I can’t find a communications cabinet anywhere, would plugging an Ethernet cable from the router into the downstairs data port potentially provide connectivity to the bedroom ports upstairs? Or does this setup usually mean there’s a hidden communications box somewhere in the house?

Edit: there are foxtel ports in the bedrooms

FTTN - what is actually needed in apartment to connect?

Spoke to Origin about NBN. The rep said my studio is NBN ready (live in apartment block) and that if I signed up, a modem would be sent to plug in. But my question is plug in where? I do have an old school phone line which is hanging off the wall (so not working, hasn't been since I moved in - a rental). The real estate said NBN will install whatever needs to be done. So I'm a bit confused and not really sure what / who I am supposed to call to get it sorted.

Moved into a rental and there's already internet

Just moved into a rental and noticed the previous occupants left their router connected to the FTTP box. I gave the password on the back of the router a try and it connected! It literally feels like a miracle.

The house has been vacant for weeks. Is it legal for me to continue to use it until they notice and cancel it?

Helpppp...

Hey guys, some time yesterday, my wifi started to act up. On my PS5 and devices, YouTube works fine. It's a little slow, I can't play online games, and it's struggling to sign into PSN, my download speeds are normal 50 to 100 mbps. Im thinking it's my modem? Im with Belong, and I've been using the first modem they sent for years. I've tried almost everything. Nothing is helping. Should I just buy a new modem?
