Daisy Chained Cat5 Cables as phone ports
Hey everyone,
I recently moved into a new house and found a few Cat5 outlets installed throughout the home, 2 on the second floor and 1 in the living room. After checking behind the wall plates, I noticed the wiring is daisy-chained from Bedroom 1 → Master Bedroom → Living Room, and only the phone pair has been terminated at each outlet.
I understand that Ethernet generally shouldn’t be daisy-chained like phone lines. However, I’ll only be using a single Ethernet connection for my own setup, so I’m wondering if it’s still possible to repurpose the existing Cat5 cabling into one continuous Ethernet run between two points.
Would someone with more experience be able to explain the process of properly connecting or bypassing the daisy-chained section so all the Ethernet pairs continue through correctly?
My experience with cabling is pretty limited (the most I’ve done is install a dash cam into the car's fuse box), so I’m mainly trying to understand how the process works before attempting anything.
