FTTP problem

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP, but I have a bit of an issue. The existing telephone cable doesn't come from the side of the house outside then inside, it is channelled straight inside into the wall cavity. The NBN technician said the only solution was to cut a big hole in the gyprock so they could access the entry point, which he somewhat located with a signal trace thing with the modem.

I just wanted to know if anybody else has/had this issue and what was your solution. Is the only solution to cut a big hole in the wall or is there any other way?

Just for a bit of info, it's a two-story house on a battle axe block sharing a driveway.
