How are we finding apartments

Guys I’m struggling. I’m looking for a 1-2 bedroom with enough space for a work from home area for June move in. Budget $2500 or less. And I’m open to any area wicker, Logan, wrigley, Lincoln park. And somehow I can’t find anything. I’ve been using Zillow, talked to brokers, searched Google and everything either falls through or I don’t hear back about scheduling tours. HOW ARE WE FINDING PLACES TO LIVE HELP.

No AC unit in apartment

I am looking to sign a lease at this unit I really liked in lakeview east. The only problem though is it doesn’t have an AC unit. The guide mentioned I could buy my own or ask for a window unit to be installed but I’m hesitant on taking those option.

Has anyone been in this spot before? How did it turn out?

I don’t think apartment demand is as strong as they’re making it seem.

If you have flexibility, don’t rush into a lease. Seriously…I think the demand is overstated. The more people are willing to say no, the more prices either come down or at least stop climbing.

ISO Apartment for 1br in LV/LP looking for any advice

Hellooo this is a long shot but I'm looking to move into a 1 bedroom in LV/LP around September (flexible), hoping I can miss a bit of the rental market craziness by then. Being close to the lake and nature, and also not far from downtown is important to me which is why I am prioritizing this area. I don't need too many amenities, just something that isn't a shoebox lol. If anybody has any insight or knows of any vacancies coming up, please let me know. Thank you!! :)

From Eastern Europe → Chi apartment, 4 weeks in. Is the "make friends" part this hard for everyone?

Background. Grew up in Belarus. Last 5 years in Poland. Moved into a Chi apartment 4 weeks ago. English is my second language, accent included.

First month went to paperwork, a bed, Trader Joe's runs.

The part nobody warned me about → making friends.

Tried the obvious:

  1. Meetup. Rooms of 20+. Everyone already knows each other.
  2. Bumble BFF. Swipe feed. Profiles miss what I'm actually looking for.
  3. Same coffee shop daily. Staff knows my order. End of relationship.
  4. One gym, regular schedule. Zero conversations past "hi."

What I want is stupid simple. One person around my age. Same neighborhood. Some shared interest. Grab a coffee Thursday 7pm. Done.

Not a group of 20. Not a scheduled dinner two weeks out. Not swipe-match-chat-for-a-week.

Two questions, depends who you are:

  1. If you moved into a Chi apartment recently → did you hit this same wall? What actually got you out of it?
  2. If you've lived in Chi for years → is this a real gap, or just what the first 3 months feel like for everyone?

4 weeks isn't a data set. Curious which camp you land in.

ISO Apartment for 1br or studio, looking for any advice

Single male mid 30s, no pets, but might adopt a cat once I settle.

I will be working at Northwestern, and my biggest ask is the commute. My budget is around <$1950, and I am looking for a studio or 1br. I want to be within a 40 minute commute at most. People keep telling me Lakeview or Lincoln Park, but many agents I have been talking to have said I am asking for too much for too little. I'm just looking for a quiet and safe neighborhood, I don't care about nightlife and all that stuff.

Criteria:

Looking to move in by June 2026, will stay for at least 1 year

In unit Washer/dryer or at least on site

Central Air

Flexible on location as long as the commute is within 1 h of Northwestern/Streeterville

NEW RULES IN r/chicagoapartments !

Hello everyone! I am one of your new mods, and I wanted to kick off this week with some new rules for this sub.

We have seen a huge influx of people joining in the past year. This subreddit has gotten a bit crowded with unanswered posts, hard-to-find information, and more. We decided to take action to improve this community.

New changes:

  • You can now upload images and videos of the rentals/leasings you are posting about. We realized we are doing this community a disservice by not allowing people to post accurate photos.
  • New flairs! You can now give yourself a different flair or a custom one!
  • New rule: Don't fearmonger about the city, and Be Nice
    • A lot of catty behavior lately. If you see anything, report it. Now we have two rules to support it!
  • New rule: To reduce the number of unanswered posts, we are implementing a rule requiring as much information as possible so others can assist.
    • If you are posting about a sublease available, please make sure this information is in your post:
      • Listing must contain:
      • Pictures (if applicable)
      • Move-in date (when does the lease end/begin)
      • Price (per month, indicate if rent will be increased)
      • Location (neighborhood or suburb)
      • SQ (how big the apartment is)
      • Bed/Bath (How many beds and baths)
      • Any other amenities (is there in-unit laundry, central air, gym in building, pets allowed, no smoking, etc)
    • If you are posting about a listing availability, please make sure this information is in your post:
      • Pictures (if applicable)
      • Move-in date
      • Price (per month or buying rate)
      • Location (neighborhood or suburb)
      • SQ (how big the apartment is)
      • Bed/Bath (How many beds and baths)
      • Any other amenities (is there in-unit laundry, central air, gym in building, pets allowed, no smoking, etc)
    • If you are looking for an apartment, room, etc, please make sure this information is in your post:
      • Move in range (May move in, short-term rental from X to Y, flexible move in, etc)
      • Price (per month or buying rate)
      • Location (neighborhood, suburb, or direction NW, S, Over east, etc)
      • SQ (how big the apartment is)
      • Bed/Bath (How many beds and baths)
      • Pets
      • Any other amenities you are looking for (is there in-unit laundry, central air, gym in building, etc.)

Things we are working on:

  • Community guides with rental company information, who to avoid, who is good, etc.
  • Landlord horror story masterthread
  • Quick links, who to call if x, y or z happens, etc.

We are very open to community suggestions. If you think we should implement/add any rules. Please let us know!

Have a great week Chicago!

Looking from out of state, do I go in person??

Hi, do you think I could get away with not coming in person to check out the apartments in person?

For context I am moving from Michigan, so I could probably pull off two days looking in person but would really rather not.

ISO Roommate for Private Condo in the Loop, June / July Move-In

Hey, I'm 26M looking for a roommate to renew my current lease with. It's a privately-owned condo unit in the Loop, very close the Washington/Wells CTA stop. 2 bed / 2 bath, 14th floor, south-facing, great natural light, and ~1,100 sq ft. Competitively priced at $1,300 per person ($2,600 total). Utilities are <$50 per month. Parking available for additional $250 per month. Finishings (cabinents, counters, & flooring) are a bit on the older side (think late 2000s), appliances are a little newer (2010s), but the price reflects that and everything is in solid condition.

Other features: In-unit W/D, 24/7 front desk, central air, shared balcony, on-site (modest) gym, easy access to any CTA line & Metra, walking distance to River North, West Loop, & Financial District. Excellent location if you work anywhere downtown and want a short commute.

Prefer male roommate around my age with stable income, no pets. 12-13 month lease, depending on start date. Preferred move-in date is July 1st, possibly as early as June 1st. Please reach out here if you're interested! For privacy reasons, I'm uncomfortable posting pictures or the exact address upfront, but if you are interested I'm more than happy to share in a private chat, along with information about myself.

Unconventional apartment hunt tips needed

Hi all! Please don’t downvote me for this, but I am looking for an apartment in Gold Coast, lakeview, LP, Wrigley (entirely because I will be going to school in River North and want a direct and short commute via brown line - I promise I’m not just thinking these are the best neighborhoods, I’ve lived in many others). That being said, I am really struggling to find an apartment. I’m looking for an update, large (700+ sq ft) 1 bed with hopefully less than 3k rent. My main issue is that I try to contact and no one replies. I’ve tried Padmapper, Domu, Corcoran, Fulton Grace, Redfin, Hotpads, you name it. It just is taking like 4 days for someone to reply even if I find an apartment within an hour of it being posted - and then the apartment is gone😭 does anyone have any tips? I’m offering 2 year leases if interested and literally sitting on these websites like a hawk.

ISO one bedroom or more apartment move in by April 30th Pilsen/Bridgeport/Hyde Park

Hello,

I am 21 years old and I'm looking for a one bedroom (i'm ok if there's more bedrooms) to move into by April 30th 12pm. My budget is 1600 and i have above 750+ credit score and I have a clean record. I have 2 cats. I would prefer a place that has a lot of kitchen space and I'm not gonna lie I kinda like places with a more modern finish. I don't really care for amenities but it would be nice to have an in unit washer and dryer but it's not a deal breaker for me. It's been really hard to find a place because I keep getting ghosted and I'm not sure why. I've put in many applications and used places like Zillow, Apartments.com, Domu, Hotpads, Fulton Grace, CrossStreet, walking in the area looking for signs, and etc. If anyone has any place suggestions you know with active available apartments or you yourself are a landlord willing to rent to me, please let me know. I'm also I'm interested in Pilsen, BridgePort, Hyde Park, Chinatown, UIC Area. Thank you!

Looking for a Roommate — 4BD/2BA, 1400 sqft, Logan Square Apartment (1 Block from Western Blue Line!)

Hello everyone! I’m looking for a clean, chill, and respectful roommate to share a spacious 4 bedroom / 2 bathroom apartment in the Logan Square neighborhood. Move-in is available as early as June 1st. Thought it’s a 4bd, it would just be yourself, me and “Buddy” my cat. NO FURTHER PETS ALLOWED. Unfortunately, I cannot risk the safety of my sole feline heir. Though, Buddy may relocate overseas in June.

📍 About the Apartment

• Wonderful Logan Square location — 1400 sqft, 1 block from the Western Blue Line stop • 3 blocks from the 606 • Central heating & cooling • Free in-building laundry • Keyless-secured entry • Apartment is fully furnished. The bedroom even comes with a hardwood queen size bed frame and mattress • You’d also have your own office and bathroom • Very responsive, respectful landlord who actually maintains the building (rare, I know!) That’s because I’m the landlord.

💰 Rent & Bills

• $1,000/month + split utilities • No hidden fees, no surprises • (Can wave $400 move in fee, if moving in June 1st)

👤 About Me

• 39yo Male, Friendly, respectful • I don’t smoke cigarettes, don’t really drink, and don’t party • I do smoke cannabis, but I’m absolutely willing to cut back or keep it strictly outdoors if it bothers you. • I already have a cat. His name is Buddy. My 13yo baby boi. So you’d have to be animal-friendly! But again, he may permanently move overseas in June.

💭 What I’m Looking ForSomeone who: • Is tidy and respectful • Communicates well • Enjoys a calm home environment • Is cool with a cat • Wants a great Logan Square location without the insane price tagIIf this sounds like a good fit, send me a message. I’ve included photosof the shared living spaces. The kitchen, living room, both bathrooms, the office you’d be able to use and Buddy. Happy to share more photos, do a video tour, or answer any questions. 🏠✨

If this sounds like a good fit, send me a message. I’ve only included a photo of the living room since this subreddit doesn’t appear to allow multiple photos in a post. Happy to share more photos, do a video tour, or answer any questions. 🏠✨

Vehicle storage recomendations

I’ll be moving to Chicago and I do currently have a car in a motorcycle. I do not want to pay $500 a month just to store the two do any of you guys currently have like a storage unit that you leave your vehicles in? I’ll be open to it as I don’t really want to sell the vehicles as they are both paid off frequently maintained and newer. I don’t need the car every day, but it will be nice to not have to rely only on CTA, especially for grocery trips and I have a dog.

When to start looking for August, near Mag Mile?

Hi, I’ve been looking for studios near Mag Mile (any neighborhood, just need to walk to NBC Tower) ideally <$2000 but everything is July at the latest…have they all been snatched up, or are they not listed yet?

Also sanity check: is $2000 for a studio in this area realistic?

Just last week an agent told me their bldg had 4 studios/1 beds for August and by the time I sent in my application 2 days later they said they were gone. Could they be lying? The bldg is popular w students so maybe there was a list but that spooked me.

When you get mad about the prices and the bidding wars...

This is what/who you should be mad at: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5643-N-Glenwood-Ave-Chicago-IL-60660/2134054636_zpid/

I'm seeing so many of these pop up. This was at least 3, maybe 4 large apartments with multiple bedrooms and sunrooms and then a developer scooped it up and turned it into one house that's completely out of reach except for the mega rich (not to mention absurdly larger than anyone ever needs). All the while, housing stock shrinks for every one of us who can't afford $2.5 million single-family homes.

Last summer, I tried to buy a multi-flat I could owner occupy but I had to give up because the asking prices were utterly delusional and I had no chance of getting anything against these developers who happily pay all cash at or above ask for buildings so they can just do this. We should all be knocking down doors to get our alders and the legislature to do something to stop this.

Reviews/Thoughts on 3110 N Sheridan?

Hey everyone, I’m moving to Chicago this summer and considering signing a lease for a condo in 3110 N. Sheridan. I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience living in or knows somebody who has lived in this building. Is it clean? is it well maintained are the elevators working properly? Any issues I should know about? What are your overall thoughts?

It looks pretty good to me from an outside view, and on my screen, but I haven’t had the chance to come visit and see it myself. Any insight is very appreciated, thanks in advance!
