What happens if you modify a car and don't tell your provider?

Looking at getting some subtle aftermarket alloy wheels and lowering springs for my hatchback. A mate told me not to bother declaring them because the insurers will never notice unless the car is completely wrapped around a tree. Is it worth the risk of having a total loss claim invalidated over something purely cosmetic?

Car has broken down and engine is broken due to overheating. Can I claim this on insurance?

I have a 2019 Vauxhall Mokka. Last week, the engine started overheating. The water tank wasn’t holding water either. I took it to a mechanic who changed the water pump and thermostat, however the issue is much deeper in the engine and will cost thousands without the guarantee of being fixed. I can’t currently afford these repairs, and there isn’t any guarantee that the car will be fixed after paying all that money. Is there any way I can make a claim through my insurance? I am with Hastings Premier.

I still have 3 years to go on my HP contract with Arnold Clark. I feel physically sick with anxiety over this and would appreciate any advice. Thank you

Supermarket accident

My wife hit a post in the supermarket car park. No other cars involved. We need to claim as the passenger door is badly damaged. The thing is she has full no claims but I don’t as I didn’t have a car for a while. Would that raise our premium a lot more if she lost her no claims rather than if I did (I think I just have one year NCB)? Would they investigate who was driving at the time?

UK Car Insurance for US citizen

Hoping someone can help, my wife has had a US driving licence for 13 years and has recently passed her UK driving test in March. We are looking at getting her a car but insurance is high due to her only just passing her UK test. Are you able to apply for insurance using both licences to bring the price down?? Or does anyone know of any tips to help 🙏🏻

Cake and Eating it

It appears to me that the insurance business seems to want it cake and eat it as well

I insure 4 vehicles, I have to declare NCB on each vehicle separately, I can't use the same NCB on more than one vehicle. BUT, should I make a claim on one vehicle my NCB is affected on all policies.

Is this fair?

Does MOT insurance actually exist? I keep seeing it bundled with used car sales but never as a standalone product you can just buy. Anyone had experience with it, did it actually pay out when you needed it?

Car insurance: do I need to declare a cycling accident that happened before I bought my car?

Long story short:

  • Moved to the UK (June 2025)
  • Got hit cycling on a zebra crossing (July 2025)
  • Solicitor A handling it (Sep 2025)
  • Bought car + insurance (Dec 2025)
  • Full UK driving license (Feb 2026)
  • Hit-and-run on my car (May 2026, minor damage, dashcam, NCD unaffected)
  • Now with solicitor B

While dealing with the hit-and-run, the cycling incident resurfaced.

Now I’m unsure about this:
Do I need to declare the cycling accident to my car insurer?

Solicitor A: “No, you weren’t driving.”
Insurer: “Yes, declare it + premium goes up (£600+).”

Spending a lot of time on this lately—just trying to understand what’s actually required.

### Additional info after the initial post ###

Additional info:

Initially picked insurer A but couldn’t complete payment. Turns out their system flagged an undeclared cycling accident and the quote went up by ~£1000.

I tried explaining it was a cycling incident, but they said it was already on record and the premium stands.

Ended up giving up and going with the current insurer B.

### Clarification from the current insurer B###

"This claim will need to be added to your policy. Even though this happened while you were cycling and before you owned a car, we still need to include any accidents or incidents from the last 5 years when setting up or reviewing your car insurance. This helps make sure your cover details are correct and avoids any issues later on."

" Since you did not declare this claim previously, this is something that would have to be updated on your policy in 7 days to keep your policy active until your expiry date. Any errors on a policy can lead to it being cancelled or treated as if it never existed. It can also lead to claims being rejected or not paid out in full. When a claim is added to the policy, we need to recalculate your price based on the level of risk linked to this claim. "

Unfortunately once you ask, the insurer knows and you have no other option.

### Why this cycling incident resurfaced ###

First time I’ve really tried to understand what actually counts as a “claim” and what happens if you don’t declare something relevant. Turns out the consequences can be pretty serious — even policy cancellation.

Asked my instructor, wasn’t sure either, so was basically told “ask the insurer.”

ChatGPT says it should be declared.

Still feels like a grey area depending on who you ask.

### The question that an insurer asks you ###

"Have you had any motor accidents, claims or losses in the last five years?

This is regardless of who/what was at fault or if a claim was made or not. If you don’t tell your insurer about previous accidents, claims or losses, your car insurance may not pay out if you make a claim"

So it seems in my case it counts as a claim—I was involved in a cycling incident where I am seeking compensation (via solicitor A) from the driver’s insurance.

### Update on hit-and-run

Askmid shows the hit-and-run car is no longer insured; Solicitor B confirmed that on the day of the incident, it was insured.

Car vs van split liability.

So I was involved in an accident with a van my insurer is saying its a split liability currently as he was pulling into the junction as I pulled out so it was low speed I have done no damage to my car but the van had a dent in the front which the driver said has caused the fan to hit his radiator even though theres no sign of leaking fluids.

I basically told my insurer within 30 mins of it happening its now been 2 weeks and they havent heard anything from their insurer about a possible claim even though the van driver has had a rental van for 13 days and there van has been taken to a garage within 3 days of it happening.

Is it possible they havent even let there insurer know and repairing it themselves as the van is 21 years old and will probably be a write off if they go through insurers.

My insurers basically said there is no timeline to when they have to respond by but surely if its a 50/50 split then both insurers have to agree before they can fix the vehicle?

Need some advice

I own an Audi TT and my policy is due to renew on the 7th June. I was paying £180 a month and I was happy with that. Now looking at renewing, the price has jumped to £300 a month without a black box for everywhere. Why is this and whay can I do about it? Im not paying that much extra and its now £150 with a black box. Im 20 with 2 years no claims benefit. Hard pill to swallow when what i was paying for without a black box is now 30 less for a black box.

No accident but made police report online for the sake of my sleep - should I tell insurance

I wasn’t sure if I hit a car but I have 100% hit a curb. The suspected car did not stop/followed me/horn. I didn’t want to be deemed as hit and run so I made a police report even though I was 70% sure I did not hit it. (I’m very anxious driving atm since I was recently involved in an accident). There was no damage to my car - no dents no scruffs no scratch marks no paint transfer on the side where I would have made contact with the car. But I have a lot of what ifs in my head so I filed the police report. Now I’ve got a police reference/log number, do I have to tell my insurance about this?

Need some advice

Hi , I have accepted the settlement money and bought the car back , it was a cat s write off , insurance have emailed me and stated that to carry on with the insurance I have to get a fresh mot done my car is in a secure garage off public road getting fixed and to make matters more complicated the insurance finishes on Thursday I don't intend to buy insurance from them anyway as the price has doubled, also mentioned in the email was that I have to register the car with dvla again ? This is the first time I have claimed and don't know what to do in what order ? Do I buy insurance and then get the new mot ? What about dvla , I have seen on some forums where they mentioned that when I sell the car eventually and transfer the log books the new log books will mention the cat s and you don't have to do anything regarding dvla at the moment

Can my car insurance update my no claims discount mid-policy, or am I going to lose my NCD?

Hi all, I’m not sure if this is the correct subreddit for this query, but it seemed like the best fit. I want to find out about my rights updating my NCD 3 months into my current insurance policy, or if there’s a chance I’m going to lose it.

Last October I was hit by another driver on a roundabout and they at first admitted liability, but then when they went back to work (they hit me whilst working as a Domino’s delivery driver) this changed and they tried to go through my insurance, saying it was my fault.
In February of this year, my insurance with Admiral was up for renewal and the investigation hadn’t been settled yet so I had to put that I had 0 No Claims Discount when applying for insurance. My insurance at the time put the rates up significantly so I moved provider to GoSkippy as it was the best I could get without my NCD, without getting a black box.
About 2 weeks ago (May) I got an update from Admiral, finding me not at fault and my no claims discount not being affected and they sent me a certificate for my 3 years NCD. I then promptly got in touch with GoSkippy, who have said they have saved this certificate on my file and that they will update this ‘when I renew with them’.
My question is, is there anything that would prevent them from adding this to my current policy whilst it’s still active? My concern is their wording implies that if I don’t renew with them then it won’t be updated and I therefore won’t have my previous NCD even if I don’t make any claims during the year. That seems unfair as I haven’t made any claims, and I have never automatically renewed as it always works out more expensive to do so.
I have tried to contact GoSkippy for clarification on this but they have stopped responding so I intend to call them, but I wanted to see if anyone had any advise before I do, so that I can understand what my rights are on this. Are they obligated to keep my NCD up to date, and (providing no claims are made during my year insuring with them), are there any regulations that prevent GoSkippy from withholding my NCD if I choose to not renew my insurance with them next year?
I’ve tried looking into this online and asking people I know, but it’s such a specific scenario that I’m struggling to get anywhere with this so any help would be appreciated!

£1700 good?

For context the car is a 2008 VW Golf 1.9 litre
I passed my test this year (21/22 female When we renew)
My partner who will be the policy holder is 23 and had had is license for about 4 years now and has only had one accident to which he was at fault this year
-
He’s joining the police force in July too so it has put the mileage up compare to our old car we had (Ford KA Mk2) when I was just learning and it and we used the car for shopping and the gym
I’ll be in my final year of university and I do work we both live with his family

Quotes from admiral who we are with now was about £1700 and that’s without a black box :)

Just wanted to hear thoughts maybe if I should shop around or something?

Temporary European insurance to non resident driver

I will be driving my UK car to an European country, roughly a 3 day drive. I am British and UK resident. My dad is an European national and wants to come and help me with the drive, but I am unable to add him to my insurance since he is not a resident. Could anyone suggest an insurance company that would sell this kind of temporary insurance? Thanks!

Insuring an imported car

Hello everybody,

I am currently in New Zealand and will be returning to the UK in September. I've got a car here and have been toying with the idea of bringing it back with me, but am unsure if it will be incredibly expensive to insure due to it then being an imported vehicle.

The car is a 1991 Nissan Safari GQ TD42

The reason I would bring it back with me is that they are quite rare in the UK and are either expensive or not in very good condition when they do come up for sale. I bought the car for roughly £5.7k, which would be a very good price in the UK.

I am 21 and have been driving since I was 17, but I realise I will still be considered a new driver.

Let me know what you guys think and if anyone has had a similar experience.

Thanks

Non-fault accident

Hi all — I was recently involved in a non-fault accident. I was driving on a main road with a 40mph speed limit when a young driver pulled out in front of me behind another car. My car braked automatically before I even had time to react. Thankfully, nobody was injured. My car only suffered some scratches to the bumper, while their car ended up with a dent to the right wing/fender.

At the scene, the other driver accepted liability and even admitted they “couldn’t see” before pulling out. However, their dad later contacted me asking to sort it outside of insurance and then later claiming they had not accepted liability and that I was somehow at fault because I still hit them.

I’ve already informed my insurance company, and they’ve told me the other driver is clearly at fault. They’ve authorised the repair, and I’ve chosen to use the manufacture to repair the bumper rather than their preferred body shop.

I also took photos of both the damage and the road layout, including the other driver’s reported view at the time. Unfortunately, I don’t have dashcam footage or CCTV, and my insurer hasn’t asked me for any additional evidence so far.

I’m keen to get this resolved as quickly as possible as the situation is causing me a fair amount of stress. I was not at fault in this incident and would not accept anything less than 100% liability being attributed to the other driver, particularly as I do not want this affecting my NCD.

Has anyone experienced a situation where the other driver later changed their version of events or denied responsibility after initially admitting fault?

Many thanks for any help/advice

Edit: I have drawn a road layout and placed it in the comments

UPDATE: The other driver has admitted liability. I am now sorting out the necessary repairs with their insurer.

First Time Car in UK

Hello all. We are middle-aged, experienced car owners and drivers from another country, but I now have my UK driving license, so we’re looking to buy a car. Insurance seems to work differently here, so the one thing we can’t figure out is how to get a car home from the lot.. Since we don’t know the exact car we will buy until we go see a few, we cannot get insurance on it in advance, so how do I drive it home? It would be uninsured for the drive home. Is it common for the car to be delivered? It seems a minor thing, but in our prior country, you get insurance in advance as it isn’t tied to the specific vehicle, so the logistics are perplexing me. Thanks in advance!
