How does this actually fail?

I have a Kohler canister flush valve. This is the 2nd time I’ve had to replace this ring gasket for a toilet that fills intermittently because of a slow leak with the gasket.

The new one fixes the problem, but I can’t see/feel anything wrong with the old one.

These things are cheap, so this is a very minor nit, so mostly curious. Is the damage invisible to normal sight/touch?

Leaking shower- can I fix this myself?

Hi all,

My shower has been leaking for a while, I put loads of fresh silicon around everywhere, called a plumber and added fresh grouting.

I noticed there was mould behind the shower so figured water was coming through the wall.

I removed a few tiles and found this behind, very crumbly plaster and lots of mould.

Id really appreciate any advice for how I could begin to fix this?

Many thanks!

AC Condensate Drain Mystery

Recently had a plumber redo this AC condensate drainage system for an air handler in the ceiling. It gravity drains from a pan's secondary drain (was like this when I moved in, probably not the best installation). He added about an inch of slope to what was essentially unsloped before.

Last night the pan was completely overflowing while running the AC at 70. By the morning it was empty and when the plumber came today he was unable to recreate the problem by pouring water into the pan.

Any ideas why he wasn't able to recreate the overflowing problem? The plumber seemed flabbergasted. Would love input from someone knowledgeable.

Im trying to replace this tub spout and I’m running into some issues. It won’t budge when I try to twist it off (leading me to believe it’s a slip-on and not threaded connection) but I can’t find any set screw (unless I’m blind).

Has anyone seen this model before or can provide any tips? Thanks!

Toilet waste going up kitchen outflow pipe!

The bathroom waste pipe (left highlighted red) is flushing with such force, the poo and waste is flying up the kitchen waste pipe directly opposite. Meaning poo is sometimes sitting in the kitchen waste pipe and stinking the house out. What can we do?

Does anyone know where I can get this extra long?

I need this outlet tee 1" longer than standard size. Does anyone know where I can get one longer? I've been looking and haven't found one yet. Maybe I'm wrongly searching for what I need.

Parents woke up to no water pressure. 180ft well with submersible pump. No water filtration/ softener system in place.

Gauge read 50psi but no water at the taps

Reset power, and manual switch. Still nothing.
He emptied the pipes with the drain valve by the switch, and very little water came out.

Bought a new switch, installed and now it arcs but no pressure buildup.

Any advice is appreciated !

Can I fix my broken toilet seat and put the seat lid back on?

During a recent 7 day migraine I fainted head/body first onto the toilet. The lid was closed at the time but came off instantly. And now the seat swivels to the left at the lightest touch.
Sorry for the tons of pictures but I really want to fix this myself and maybe all the angles will help. I’ve tried and tried to no avail but it seems like I’m so close!
Any advice or instructions would be much appreciated!

Capping off an old hose/tube connection?

(Sorry if this isn't the best board to ask this. It was the first one that came to mind, please let me know if there's somewhere else more appropriate)

I'm trying to look up a part I need to buy, and am not having any luck figuring out what it's called, if it has a specific name, and thus cannot find a listing for it.

I've removed this unneeded hose/line from my pool pump system, and am now trying to just cap off the 2 places where the hose was connected.

It was a rubber hose that was squeezed into plastic female connectors on both ends (10mm inside, in the threaded area) that then screws onto the pool pump system. So I'm trying to find just a simple cap, ~10 mm inside, that will thread onto the 2 male ends sticking out of the pool pipes, and close up the system again.

I've tried various terms, trying looking specifically for plastic ones, PVC ones, pool pump parts, etc., and am only getting non-threaded (so not able to withstand the pressure of the system) thread protectors, dust caps, etc.

What is the proper name of the threaded caps I'm looking for, please?

Thanks

Hello all. Went to visit family over the weekend and they are having sink issues. It won’t drain at all. First thing I did was dump 2 big pots of hot water as sometimes the pressure pushes though. Didn’t work. I then used a plunger and that didn’t work. So in the pictures the black curved pipe is rubber so I opened that drained the water. The disposal which is gross btw doesn’t seem to be the source. After it was drained I took some of the heavy drain cleaner and poured it down after pipe was sealed. Put water back in and it filled up again but this time drained slowly. Should I buy more grease remover and pour it again or should I get an auger and go in where the black pipe is? Not very experienced at this so any tips would be appreciated

So my dishwasher won’t turn on and i don’t think it finished the last cycle fully as it hasn’t drained. The dishes themselves are clean tho. Do you think it might be a blown fuse or maybe it got shifted and unplugged? If I pull it out to check the plug will it get even more screwed up??
I believe it’s a Bosch SHE53C86N
EDIT: it’s a SHE46C06UC so it’s like 20yrs old 😭

Roots in PVC downspout drains

I have two 4" PVC pipes running under a flower bed that serve as the drains for two downspouts. Quite a few years ago, when I replaced a retaining wall at one end of the bed, I left an opening at the bottom of the wall for them to drain. But I neglected to check it for, um, years. [Yes, I know, that was stupid. I know better, especially now, but I can only fix that going forward.] Recently I noticed that, when it rained, water was overflowing at the junction of the downspout to the PVC drain. I opened it up and found the PVC filled with grit and fine roots. I looked at the neglected exit and found roots growing up into both pipes. There are several per pipe, 3 or 4 between 1/4" and 5/8" in size and quickly turn into a mass. I've cut the roots off, but that didn't make them disappear.

Obviously, I need clear pipes for proper drainage Replacing the pipes is undesirable, I'd like to clean these out. The two pipes are about 20 feet and 15 feet long respectively.

I've tried spraying water into the pipe using a garden home from above but I quickly reach the point where no soil comes out. I've tried that from below and it took a while, but the same has happened there, too. I've tried to grab the vines with lock grip pliers and pull the vines out, but the vine eventually breaks in the pliers grip. I have a 3" x 24" auger that I tried to drill up into the pipe (pipes have straight exit, and a bend right below the surface at the entrance), to try to lodge it in the roots and pull them out, but so far no luck (drill is uncooperative, need to remove bricks/dig a bigger hole for better access, etc.) I do not have a sewer line camera.

Other ideas I've had:

  • Rent a rotary drain cleaner with a cutting head from a home improvement store ($$)
  • Purchase a pressure washer and use a sewer jetter head, in hopes it'll destroy enough of the small roots that the large ones can be pulled out. ($$)
  • Hire a plumber to do one of the above ($$$)

The pressure washer sounds like the safest alternative, and about the same price as the rotary drain cleaner (at about $100/day), but I'm not sure it'll get the job done. Thoughts?

Channeling in sewer pipe

We just had our inspection for our first time home purchase. I was wondering how bad the channeling on this pipe looked/ if it could be fixed with cipp as opposed to trenching up the yard. Or if it’s so bad it needs to be fully dug up on which case lots of negotiations will be needed.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Replacing pressure tank questions

My pressure tank started leaking out of a rust spot in the back.

I bought a replacement tank, 20g. Im the homeowner and reasonably confident I can replace it myself. But my main question is regarding the connections, Ive not worked with brass much. My tank did not come with a new connection kit.

Would you all recommend i replace the existing connections and pressure switch?

Any advice/info appreciated. My brother use to be a plumber but doesn’t have a lot of free time. He is however able to FaceTime me while I do this job, and my main goal is to have all the supplies I need when I start. I have a pipe wrench, adjustable wrench, Teflon tape, pipe dope, pvc glue and the purple stuff. I have tons of pvc and connectors. Just not sure about the brass fittings x
