Does aerlingus offer free upgrades?
Im travelling on my birthday and was going to ask if they have any free upgrades?
Has it worked for anyone before?

TLDR: refuses to allow me to buy an upgrade because they didn’t have any meals left and feared reputational damage even though I said I had no problem with it.
I live in New York for a few years now and was just back home in Ireland for a few days. Today I was flying back from Dublin to New York on Aer Lingus. I usually fly Aer Lingus when I come back because they have the flight that lands at 4am in Dublin that means I can be in bed at my mum's house by 5.30 am and sleep right away. I'm a bit tired the first day but by day 2 basically no jetlag, and it can be very rough and last 5 days.
For reasons I won't delve into it's been a somewhat rough visit home. On top of that have to do some work on the plane before the end of the day. American companies you know how they are.
When I got to the airport, I had a feeling the flight wouldn't be superrr busy, so as I was checking in I asked the very nice person at the desk if there were any seats left in business class. I couldn't face a 7 hour flight in a cramped cabin not able to relax or get any rest.
She checked and told me there were 8 empty seats in business class. I asked how much it would cost for an upgrade then. She checked and said it would be €700 and she'd have to call her manager for approval. I thought about it for a moment and eventually told her I'd do it then.
She goes to call the manager, and when she hangs up she comes back over and tells me they couldn't upgrade me as there are no business class meals left.
I was a bit disappointed to hear that and as I was thinking, I realized I didn't really care about the meal I just wanted a bit of comfort and privacy. I said I'd still like to upgrade and I'll just eat my normal meal. I always bring 2 sandwiches on the plane as Aer Lingus food is absolutely shite and tiny portions and I'm always hungry by the end of the flight.
She said oh ok, let me just call my manager again to tell him you still want to upgrade. She calls again and is talking on the phone and starts looking a bit puzzled while. When she's done she comes back over looking a bit apprehensive and confirms that, no they will not upgrade me as there's no meal.
I reiterated that I understood that and it wasn't an issue. And she said said "yes, due to concerns of "reputational damage" they wouldn't upgrade me. I paused probs looking a perplexed and just said "oh ok, that's funny but no worries.".
Reputational damage:? Aer Lingus has progressively enshittified ever since they tried to copy Ryanair. Outside of the lovely staff and the way they say "remove the jacket from it's packet" in the safety demo, it's really a pretty basic experience. The food, the cabins, the movie options. You don't even get a free beer or wine with your meal anymore.
Before landing they used to give you a sandwich cut in triangles AND A SCONE with jam and butter with your tea or coffee. It was lovely.
Now you get a "muffin" which is actually a dry plain sponge cake loaded with chemicals that would survive nuclear annihilation and about 20ccs of concentrated orange juice. After 6 hours on the plane.
Even their business class which I've taken a couple of times is nowhere near most other airlines (don't hate me I never book business class tickets directly but only upgrade occasionally if there's a discount available at the last minute or book way in advance with credit card points I have to due to my American debtworthiness).
Anyways I get checked in, go through security - shout-out to T2 security for being the best damn airport security I've ever experienced! Always a breeze.
I stop by WH Smith for my 2 sandwiches... and two packets of Tayto and two Dairy Milk Turkish - which will be my 8th and 9th Dairy Milk Turkishes in 5 days. Chocolate in America is god awful and palm oil or not Irish is miles better.
Eventually I get on the plane and I swear there's
barely a sinner on it and I have 4 seats to myself and no one around me for 5 row. And yer man just gave me two cokes and two pretzels! So things are on the up (literally).
I don't really have a point but it struck me as bizarre and i have nothing else to do. Well, besides work... which I guess I should do now that I've procrastinated in the form of a Reddit post.
Ah sure look.
I accidentally booked a flight going from Shannon to Heathrow next month instead of Heathrow to Shannon. I made the mistake this morning and coped it straight away, I immediately rang and left a voice note. I’ve heard nothing back, I’ve tried ringing several times and haven’t got an answer. I’ve tried contacting them on social media and I’m met with AI. The online support chat is also AI and doesn’t nothing to help. I need to speak to an actual human… does anyone know how? Any advice is appreciated.
Could any of you tell me which lounge at Dublin I get access to with aer credit card’s 2 lounge pass per year thing?
Title pretty much sums up. 7 hour trip so our party of 4 decided to spend extra to ensure we had extra space for our infant.
Arrival trip went great, $200 well spent. Return trip we bought the exact same seats. The flight had 3 infants on board and I’m guessing because we were a party of 4, they put us in regular “saver +” seats and gave infant seats to two other families. I have no idea if they paid extra to ensure the infant friendly seat (we did). My understanding is “saver +” seats are just in the middle 1/3 of the plane instead of the back 1/3. There is no other difference.
Flight staff immediately apologized and politely declined to accommodate us and promised we would be refunded the $200 if we talked to customer service. We didn’t make a fuss. Sometimes things happen.
Now comes the frustration. We were immediately denied the refund stating that regular “saver +” in the middle of the plane are actually BETTER than the bulkhead infant seats we paid for which is obviously laughable. They admitted we were sold an infant friendly seat and admitted we didn’t receive an infant friendly seat.
This is a few quotes from customer service during my 50 minute call.
“If you sell me an infant friendly seat, do you have to give me an infant friendly seat?”
“Of course not, you are a saver customer so any other seat upgrade will not be refunded.”
“Just hang up, you are wasting your time because I’m not going to give you the refund.” After refusing to let me talk to a manager.
“This is your second warning. I am going to hang up on you.” I have no idea what the warning was about, and I never received a first warning. I never made any insults just told the person obviously they couldn’t help me so I’d like to speak with a manager.
Customer service continuously told me that they were talking to managers off the phone, but continued to refuse to let me talk to one because they weren’t available. A bit curious.
TLDR: we spent $200 on an infant friendly seat which we didn’t receive. Flight staff apologized and confirmed we should receive a refund because there was no safety circumstances that prevented us from our seats (2 other infants on board). Customer service denied the refund because our regular seats were in the middle of the plane.
Writing a post as I spent a long time looking for current info before booking a recent trip and didn't find all my questions answered. Maybe this will help someone else.
We decided to go to Europe pretty quickly and booked dates three weeks in advance for two people for late April. Played around with dates and combinations, and booking one-way flights were the best option. Cash prices for these flights were fairly high, so while we used a lot of points it worked out for us. Status points were earned on each leg.
Edit: Started the trip by accessing the Alaska Lounge (N) using the Atmos credit card lounge passes. Partner booking fees were waived due to using the Atmos card (a grand savings of something like $12 each way, each person).
Condor: SEA-FRA-CDG Economy, 60,000 points after applying the Atmos 25K Global Companion Award. $175 taxes & fees total.
Just under a 1.5hr layover in FRA, which was enough time to transfer planes; gates were near each other separated by immigration/security. 1 x 20kg bag per person was included (this info was hard to find until after booking and looking up reservation on Condor site). I ended up purchasing two seats together at an extra cost but shouldn't have bothered, plane wasn't full and we would have been seated together anyway.
Economy seats were very uncomfortable and felt cramped. The back seat pocket design wasn't great, things kept falling out the sides and bottom and it seemed to take up space. Blanket and pillow provided, dinner and a breakfast snack served. Entertainment options were fine, although about halfway into the flight I went to look for something to watch and almost everything was only kids and cartoons - this wasn't due to my settings. Close to breakfast time they seemed to reboot the system and all the other original options appeared.
Regretted not spending 130 Euros each to upgrade to Premium Economy - which was an option provided via SeatBoost. ANY extra amount of leg room would have made a difference to the overall flight. Landed in Paris exhausted, at least it was mid-afternoon so hotel check in was open. We would fly Condor again if it was saving us cash but it wouldn't be our first option.
Aer Lingus: MRS (Marseille) - Dublin overnight layover - SEA, Economy, 70,000 points, $260 cash. 1 x 23kg bag per person, checked through to final destination (we had one bag slightly under, one slightly over, no issues). US Immigration & Customs cleared in Dublin, so landed in SEA as if it was a domestic flight.
Economy seats here felt like they had more room - and no problems with back seat pocket design. Blanket, pillow, and earphones provided. Good entertainment options - got to see some Apple & HBO shows I don't usually have access to. They announced dinner came with 1 complimentary alcoholic beverage...but we were given two during the pre-dinner service so that started things well 😄 The service overall was great. Despite not sleeping on this flight due to the timing, we arrived back in Seattle not feeling like we had been squashed into a tight space.
I don't know if the seat pitch on both airlines is the same...but the difference in the feeling of space between the two was noticeable. We were prepared for Aer Lingus to be as bad as Condor but as soon as we sat down we remarked on it.
Carry on: Condor weighed and tagged as appropriate, Aer Lingus didn't.
Alaska Atmos BOA Credit Card: The Visa security settings made it difficult at times to book things online in the lead up to the trip. Some museum, train tickets and tours worked, some didn't.
I found one thread on Reddit discussing a Visa 3D Secure issue someone had encountered and that was extremely helpful when I rang Bank of America to work it out. The call center couldn't see any declined transactions, and as soon as I mentioned Visa 3D they investigated before transferring me to the fraud department who knew what I was talking about. I had to call multiple times to ask them to release the security settings so I could make transactions - and they would only do this for one hour at a time.
While there was a 24-hr direct number, we also took a Mastercard with us as a credit card backup. We purchased Paris metro daily passes online when needed, and the BOA card wouldn't work; we couldn't be bothered calling BOA each time we wanted to use it so Mastercard it was. I understand the security provided, but this was annoying.
We have enough points to do this all again so time to earn some more money and make it happen!
I am a Platinum member so I have lounge access for myself and a companion when travelling with Aer Lingus.
We are going on holidays in June as a family of 4. Kids are aged 7 and 9.
Can I bring the kids into the lounge and what will I be charged?
Hi! I booked a return LAX-DUB saver flight and was hoping to upgrade to business class once i call them. I did this before and there was no issue. Instead, they said they can add me to a waitlist which we did. overall he mentioned it would cost 180k avios points for 2 people which we have on our account. I see other people get responses within 3-5 days if they have been upgrading. Is this the same when being waitlisted? Should I also email them and request the upgrade or is calling sufficient? I'm just not sure if the 3-5 day responses also apply to people being waitlisted? I see there are plenty of seats still avaialble and my flight isn't until September. Also, when I go to manage my booking I'm no longer able to access it so I'm hoping this is good news. Looking for any advice, if the caller having me waitlisted is just as good as me emailing the aerclub and asking for an upgrade or if this is overkill. Thanks!
Got my first Starlink flight today with Aer Lingus and it's amazing! I got approximately 150 Mbits/sec on the transatlantic route! There used to be so many dead zones with almost no signal in the middle of the ocean, now it's as good as any domestic flight in the US. and it's free!
Dublin back home to Nashville. Service was sub par. No arrival drink, flight attendant was super unorganized. Constant queue to the bathroom. There’s 3 bathrooms and it appeared the entire plane went to the business class bathroom. Food was good. But service can use work. We flew British airways business class for our flight from the states. Guess we were spoiled and the bar was set at a level. Aer lingus is unable to meet. Not rich but expect to get what we paid for. Super disappointing. Will fly BA exclusively next time.
I'm flying EWR to AMS by way of Dublin in mid-June. This is my first flight with Aer Lingus and I had a few questions that I haven't been able to figure out on my own.
First, I have a couple of food allergies that I'd like to avoid, specifically cumin and tomato (so no curry, nothing with red sauce, etc.). I figured the easiest way around this would be to pre-order a special meal, but the website is very vague about ingredients. In your experience, is there a particular meal that would work well for avoiding these things?
Second, I have a Saver fare ticket that originally came with a carry-on. I've seen that their baggage policy has changed since I booked the ticket and, while I'm not adverse to checking my carry-on, I'm a little anxious about doing this with such a tight connection (my layover in Dublin is something like an hour and 15 minutes). Should I just suck it up and pay the extra cost to keep my carry-on with me, or do you think I'll be fine with checking it?
Aer Lingus via Chase Points Help!
I have a ticket I booked using Chase Points but because we have a kid under two with their own seat, we had to call and have an agent do the booking. Well, this flight is FRIDAY (4 days from now). I noticed a week ago my middle name was spelled wrong and called Chase to correct it since their agent had to manually do the booking last December. They created a new reservation but they cannot “reissue” the ticket saying Aer Lingus has to but Aer Lingus is saying Chase has to. I’ve been calling and dealing with this daily for HOURS. Has this happened to anyone else before? They keep saying they’ve escalated the issue but no one seems to know what the heck to do to get this corrected and so many agents promise to call me back but never do.
Any tips or advice? I’m freaking out I will need to buy a whole new ticket (now $1599) and Chase is saying they won’t get me a new ticket without losing all the points I used to buy it plus me having to pay for the new ticket myself. Help!!!!
I’ve always wondered how people approach seat selection when flying. Some people seem to book as early as possible to get their preferred spot, while others don’t mind waiting and just go with whatever they’re assigned.
Personally, I’ve had mixed experiences sometimes waiting works out fine, and other times I end up stuck somewhere uncomfortable. Curious what everyone else does and if you think it actually makes a big difference in the overall flight experience?
Does anyone know whether a diaper bag counts as your personal item when traveling with a lap infant or if you get a diaper bag in addition to your personal item?
I called the service line to ask this question, and she told me i can have a diaper bag. But there was definitely a language barrier, and I’m not sure that is true. I’m just trying to plan how I pack.
On other airlines, the diaper bag is in addition to the personal item. But I’m not sure about Aer Lingus.
This is what our itinerary shows. There are four people (2 adults, 1 three-year-old, and 1 lap infant) traveling together.
I searched this sub and didn’t find an answer, so I appreciate any advice.
Hi
I don't have alot of flight experience and need to choose between west jet and condor between germany and canada.
I could also go aer lingus but it would be longer and stop in Dublin (1h10min would that be enough?)
Can anyone telle me their experience?
TL;DR BA booked flights from April not yet credited to AerClub. Anyone else experiencing a delay?
I'm curious if anyone has in the current qualification period (starting on April 01st) booked flights on BA website/ app flown on BA metal and credited their flights to AerClub? Historically, flights used to take eight days to credit my AerClub from BA but I am now approaching four weeks. I am waiting for 600 Tier Credits so far from April alone. I am Concierge so it doesn't affect me at the moment as I have all of my benefits. I emailed the Concierge line and their response was that flights flown with partner airlines (only BA and AA) can take up to ten weeks to credit. I'm interested to learn if anyone else has had their BA flights credit their EI account or still waiting like I am. ☘️
I puzzled for see that full price ticket from Dublin to SFO is cheaper(880€) than 12500 avios plus 940€.
Is this a common thing? Also does AerLingus give a very poor value on booking flights?
