[Need Advice] Is this perioral dermatitis?

Been dealing with more acne this year particularly on my chin/around my mouth and nose. I sent a photo into the boots online doctor and they said it looked like perioral dermatitis, and I've also contacted my GP now but looking for advice from people who have experienced it themselves. I get a lot of very tiny bump around my mouth and chin, tiny whiteheads that are persistent even when popping and such. Sometimes clear liquid is all that comes out of them. My tretinoin seems to make it look so much worse even though it's worked for me for years, so I had to switch to azaelic acid and after a month the inflammation was a bit calmer but there were still lots of tiny bumps around my smile lines etc. I tried to double cleanse with a vitamin c cleanser and my chin was just inflamed and horrific, now I'm left like this. Been using azaelic acid for about 4 days again with a regular cleanser and moisturiser. I feel so insecure! I do also have tiny clogs at the sides/bridge of my nose unsure if that's the same thing and if it can extend up to there

1.5 years in what made it worse, what helped, still not fully cleared

First breakout hit me in 2024. Didn’t really know much back then - tried different products, made it worse. Got prescribed doxycycline, didn’t work for me. After that I was hesitant about more antibiotics, so I went round to several dermatologists. Each one pointed to a different root cause. Ended up trying skin laser, which turned out to be the worst thing I did.

Overwhelmed, stressed, lost confidence to even meet people.

What’s helped me since:

Less is better. Stripped down to almost nothing.

SLS-free has been a big win - switched out toothpaste, everything.

Less dairy. Took weeks to notice flare.

Not fully recovered. Still get flares around out of nowhere sometimes. But it’s nowhere near where it was.

Will test and share overtime.

Anyone having same case ?

perioral dermatitis 5 months now!

I need help because I can't stand anything else. For the past 5 months I have had perioral dermatitis that won't go away with anything. The skin is red around the mouth, the nose with small pimples. I have tried 3 months of the antibiotic vibramycin where I haven't seen any clear improvement. I have tried metrogel, elidel, soolantra, fusidic but nothing. Any moisturizer I use causes me flare. I don't know what to do, as the months go by it gets worse and worse. Is the solution to take accutane? And I'm scared

need advice please. been dealing with this for months now and tried the following. thank you!

hi everyone

So I’ve been having an allergic reaction and previously had dermatitis all over my face, but that’s cleared up significantly. I’m just stuck with whatever is happening on my lips now.

I do not have fillers, this is all swelling. I have no swelling in my mouth. My tongue is a normal size. But my lips peel like crazy they burn sometimes I can’t even smile or else the skin cracks and I bleed. I’ve tried Dr. cortibalm and normal Vaseline, basically anything I can think of that that’s over-the-counter.

This is definitely the worst it’s ever been. I’m receiving hate online because people are making fun of my lips, which is really unfair considering this is out of my control right now, but it’s making me really insecure.

I’m not sure if this is fungal triggered at this point but it did get significantly worse after I ended my course of azithromycin because I had an ear infection.

Started taking my iron meds too, and vitamin C in case it’s vitamin related.

I’ve taken Pepcid, I take Benadryl almost every night when there’s a flareup and it does absolutely nothing. The only reason I don’t think it’s an allergic reaction is because there’s nothing going on in my mouth or the rest of my body.

Would really really really appreciate any advice thank you so much.

Exfoliator recommendation?

Does anyone have product recommendations for exfoliation? I know it’s dicey with this condition (and I have rosacea too - lucky me!), but I’m in my 40s and I gotta exfoliate or my skin looks dull and flakey. I won’t over-do it, I promise! Thanks in advance 🙂

Best treatments for chronic redness from PD?

I’ve had perioral dermatitis for many years, and while I rarely get flare ups, bumps or anything like that anymore, I still have so much redness around the nasolabial and chin area. It very clearly follows the outline from my PD outbreaks. What are the best treatments for this? It can be skincare, lasers, injectables etc allll tips are welcome as I am so tired of constantly having to cover it up and being so self conscious of it! Thanks in advance 🙏🏻 (sorry if there’s any grammar mistakes English isn’t my first language!)

Perioral dermatitus and angular chelitis?

Ive had this on and off for about 1,5 years and this is the worst I have been. Been jumping around doctors each one saying different things. I am now on Rozasol(metronidazole) and was told to cut all other lip balms and so on. I have now been on it for 3days and I know everyone says it gets worse before it gets better but I can barely open my mouth on this zero treatment. I have become very desperate and I suspect my doctor told me I had PD since the redness around my mouth but my corners are definitely the worst part and on my worst days I am oozing yellow fluid from my lips. Has anyone had similar symptoms and? If yes what was the thing that changed it all for you? Any tips?

Advice on using tretinoin with PD?

I went to a derm to improve my skin and tackle acne issues I’ve been dealing with for the longest time. Little did I know that the acne I was experiencing was PD ☠️ I did a slow ramp up to using tretinoin, but once I started using it daily and using it around my problem areas (around my mouth and chin area) that’s when I had THE WORST PD flare up I’ve ever experienced. I was foolish to think that it was just purging (this was before I knew PD was a thing!) so I continued to use tretinoin in those areas.

I haven’t gone back to my derm yet to get it officially diagnosed but I’m 100% it’s PD and tret is the culprit.

I’m still treating and recovering from it, god bless this sub for all the advice. I’ve completely updated my routine ever since the flare up.

My question is, once I heal, what’s a recommended method to get back to using tretinoin? I’d obviously avoid the areas where I get PD but I’d still like to be able to use it to get the skin benefits on the rest of my face.

I’m aware that tret does travel so I’m super afraid that with even avoiding the area around my mouth and chin, that it would still trigger it.

Current routine: AM ProActiv Sulfur Cleanser Tower 28 Hypochlorous Acid Spray Torriden Balanceful Cica Serum Inkey List Azelaic Acid

(I don’t go outside so no SPF for now until I find one that agrees with my skin)

PM Splash face with water Tower 28 Hypochlorous Acid Spray De La Cruz 10% Sulfur Mask - 30 mins Inkey list Azelaic Acid Pimple patches where I have pustules

This won't leave...

I've had this for 5 freaking years. Mulitple derm appointments and nothing has helped remotely. I've tried ivermectin, clotrimazole, sulfur soap, tacrolimus, doxycycline.

Any advice or tips this ruins my confidence or any recommendations for a cheap cover up

This pretty much put my POD in remission

I used it every day with a gel moisturizer, and I'm off antibiotics and using sunscreen. I think my skin barrier is fixed hopefully!!!

Erythromycin 2% experience

Hello! After dealing with perioral dermatitis for a couple months I finally went to a doctor. I was prescribed Erythromycin 2% Gel. Has anyone used it before to treat their dermatitis? My doctor did not put me on an oral antibiotic due to the issues it would cause with my gut. I am prescribed this for two months.

I need sunscreen recommendations for high uv

Im a maid of honor and Im having bad flair ups with PD and when I try sunscreen it just goes nuts.Im pale and i need sunscreen for a destination wedding in Dominican. Its high uv compared to where I am.

I burn easy and get freckles/dark spots clusters around my lips/eyes.. I dont want my skin damaged.

I only use zinc based and in canada they have regulations on sunscreens that can be used /brought in from countries. So im limited on whats here.

I've tried some korean ones that are here since they pass the regulations but, im stuck on whats would be some good ones to try out.

Used rovectin- hydrating one but, that caused a flare all over.

I dont like the la posay ones/tinted they burned my eyes so bad and skin felt so gross.

I just like some recommendations that I can try before june to see if they can work. Please and thank you <:)

Giving up and going back to Doxy

I’ve been on Doxy twice before — once in April 2025 and once in November 2025. Both times cleared my POD but i’ve been desperate to figure out the root cause and trying to fix on my own. It’s only gotten worse. Desperate to relieve the dryness I was using La roche posay Cicaplast as a trial and it only seemed to inflame the issue as other comedogenic or oily products do. Now I’m back to Vanicream face moisturizer and wash which doesn’t seem to make the issue worse or better. I’m starting to think that it’s an overgrowth of demodex mites since my skin never really fully ‘heals’ and the patches spread when i use oily products. Seeing dermatologist in a week and a half and got another prescription for doxycycline because the self consciousness and itchiness is really getting to me. Has anyone had success with antibiotics and other topical treatments for dust mites?

is this PD? please help!

I developed a dry patch on my skin last April. I was prescribed hydrocortisone and advised to use it for four weeks, but it didn’t seem to help, and she asked me to use it for 4 more weeks, so I stopped. Since then, I’ve tried several treatments without success. I’ve consulted three different doctors, all of whom diagnosed it as eczema and recommended topical steroids along with moisturizers. However, I’ve been hesitant to use steroids because the patch tends to return once I stop.

The dryness is limited to this one area and hasn’t appeared elsewhere on my body. For skincare, I regularly moisturize with Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume and seal it with Vaseline. I also use CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser on my face after showering with cold water. Despite consistently following this routine, I haven’t seen any improvement over the past year. It always looks like this. I would really appreciate some advice

Could PD flare up be caused by dysautonomia?

Question for fellow sufferers of PD! I have never dealt with PD before, and have always had fairly smooth skin, however for the past two months, I have had the worst skin flare up ever, and I was completely stuck until I found this subreddit and connected the dots.

Ironically enough, I was also just diagnosed with POTS, though I’ve been feeling the symptoms for about six months now. Does anyone else have dysauto dysfunctions? If so, have you ever noticed a relationship between the two? Are there specific things you watch out for that trigger your PD?

Honestly, the POTS is making my life hell enough. I’ve had to cut back my work availability because I can’t be on my feet for very long. My job is very customer facing, so the days I am there, I have to wear makeup. I have a dermatologist appointment scheduled, but it’s a month out 🥲 Any advice is appreciated, I just want to feel pretty again.

Cracking, red, burning, dry, inflamed lips. Been going on for a while now on and off

They burn and will dry and flake up really intensely. It’s been happening on and off for like a year now.

I’ve seen a dermatologist about this and she gave me a ton of creams and gels and said it’s related to some dryness that sometimes appears in the sides of my nose where the sides of my nostrils connect to my face. I also sometimes get random burning flakes between my eyelids and eyebrow, sometimes in seemingly random spots. Always my face. And sometimes even the most sensitive of lotion (vanicream sensitive skin) will make my face burn for a min. She never really gave it all a name/reason, just gave me these creams. She did at one point say the word perioral dermatitis and said it was probably all connected.

I have lots of these prescription creams and gels I can try, and I have, but I don’t think they’re working/don’t know which to focus on, and I just found out she moved to another state.

Any ideas of what it is/what prescriptions might help? I can also provide a list of what I have (it’s four different ones) but I want to see what people think without that bias bc I’m not sure if it was a properly thorough diagnosis

Is this PD? Red bumps developing a 10-14 days after a slight burn by differin.

Hi!

I recently used a stronger percentage of adapalene (.1 to .3) and burned my skin. it was initially dry and photosensitive but looked normal. I then began to develop a few deep, cystic type pimples on the high points of my cheeks which has never happened to me before. Then two days ago these small red raised bumps appeared all over my cheeks nose and eyebrows. they don’t appear to be coming to a head, and my skin is not dry itchy or flaking. My twin sister mentioned developing some PD on her face in response to stress and some vitamin deficiencies so right now that’s my only idea of what this could be.

obviously a dermatologist is the person I should ask but they are booked out for months for my area and tbh i am broke.

i am using only my ceramedx face wash and moisturizer which are very gentle. even my purito unscented cica serum is making my skin sting :(

photos are from today and the day they developed.

thanks so much for taking the time to read, any insight at all is appreciated!
