Auto-regen for the win!

I just discovered that there is an auto setting for regen. This lets me coast freely but the car will gradually increase regen based distance/deceleration of the car in front of me. No car in front? It'll coast on 0/1. Car in front, it increases regen to slow down (I am avoiding using the term brake as it won't fully stop the vehicle as far as I can tell) as long as my foot is off the accelerator pedal. Amazing! I love it!

If you're like me and have never seen this before, hold the right regen paddle until the auto indicator appears.

What feature did you discover months later?

Cost of Repair: expensive or normal (front and rear disc/drum)

Kia dealership has quoted (e-niro '21, 40k miles):

  1. O/s/f breaks are binding heavily. £910 for new front pads and discs, and possible new calliper osf (but need to investigate after).
  2. o/s/r brake disc is warped, causing brakes to bind. £495 for new pads and discs on rear.

They are adamant this isn't covered by warranty. Is the price within normal range or should I shop around, and if I do, would car still be in warranty if I replaced the discs/pads elsewhere?

Update:

Dealership is saying a seized calliper on front has caused the brakes to wear down prematurely. The calliper is probably covered by warranty (So £-340 for front disc situation) but the subsequential damage to brake discs is not.

They're also saying they can't repair the callipers (probably covered by warranty, so minus £350) if we try to get the discs done ourselves, as they won't put new callipers on old discs, and don't advise getting new discs (elsewhere) on the old callipers.

Called Kia customer service who are not saying anything about the subsequential damage, until the speak to dealership.

Many ways to activate the parking brake (EPB?)

Hi,

It's been almost three weeks now with our Niro (the 2023 remodel) and we are enjoying it. But one thing that has been bothering my partner and I is that there seem to be maybe 3 (maybe even more) ways to activate the parking brakes.

  1. Coming to a full stop, and press the P in the middle of the gear shifter.

  2. Coming to a full stop, and use the EV button to turn the car off.

  3. Coming to a full stop, put the car into neutral, then pull the parking brake switch up.

Now, the dude at the dealership told us doing 3 is the correct way to park it, otherwise it was not actually applying some parts of the brakes. Idk, he told us it was at least different from the other two options.

I have tried to read the manual, think the brales are referred to EPB, and to me it seems that as long as the light for the brake is active... well, they are active?

I just want to park correctly when there is a proper incline. Help a fellow owner out please.

Many thanks!

I joined the club

Got a ‘23 and so far I really like. It has actually has more headroom than the CRV I traded in for it. The level 1 charger typically recoups what we have been driving

Seriously considering.

Good day everyone. I’ve been looking at the EV Niro for a while now. I wanted to ask if there are any issues or concerns for this vehicle.

I’m thinking of going to check out a 2023 Niro Wind this weekend that has 30k miles and they’re asking $23k for it.

I’ve looked through the sub and found some smaller issues but nothing big as far as I could tell.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mysterious creaking and chirping sounds in our 2023 Kia Niro EV

We bought our 2023 Kia Niro EV used about 9 months ago, and we've been dealing with some frustrating noise issues ever since.

The problems:

  • Creaking/rattling sounds when driving over bumps or uneven surfaces
  • A chirping/cricket-like noise when accelerating above 50 km/h (around 30 mph)

The mechanic hears exactly what I hear, so I'm not going crazy, but they simply can't figure out what's causing it. We've had the car in for service 5 times now. They've tried various fixes and replaced different parts, but nothing has solved the issue.

Has anyone else experienced these specific problems with their Niro EV? We're actually considering using our consumer rights to return the car and get another Niro EV, because aside from these noises, we absolutely love this car.

Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

So happy to finally move to EV from ICE!

Love the orange 🧡

Let me know what you think, and any tips about the car!

I prefer having no regen braking as I can coast and use less power to travel the same distance. Seems like the most efficient way?

Any good knowledge around maintainence/warranty is appreciated too.

Thanks!

my 2023 wave wakes up when I approach, but doesn't unlock.

Hi, I've had this 2023 Wave less than a week, so please excuse me if this is answered elsewhere...

it seems like I'm missing something super basic, but when I walk up to my car with the fob in my pocket, the car wakes up (interior and handle lights turn on etc.), but it doesn't unlock, and I have to push the unlock button on the fob to get in. when I tried pushing the button in the handle, it locked the car again, even when the doors were already locked. how can I have the car be locked when I'm not trying to get into the car, but unlock automatically when I want to get into the car?

due to where I live and work, I am not comfortable with leaving the car unlocked.

Owner Service?

Does anyone fill this themselves? I can’t figure out why it would need to be taken to a dealer. Insights?

I finally went with a used 2023 Kia Niro EV Trim 4 - 24k miles - in green from a Kia dealer. It came with around 3 years 11 months of Kia warranty remaining plus 12 months MOT, so that gave me a lot more confidence going used.

The dealer also provided a battery SOH report showing 100%, which was another big factor in going ahead with it.

Also decided to go with an Ohme charger for home charging after comparing a few options.

I moved from a manual petrol car to EV for the first time, so there’s definitely a learning curve, but I’m really enjoying it so far. Currently getting around 4.2–4.7 miles/kWh in city driving, which honestly surprised me.

The comfort, visibility and practicality seem great for family use.

Would love to hear any realworld tips/tricks from existing Niro EV owners on:
- getting the best possible range
- battery care habits
- regen braking settings
- motorway efficiency
- any useful hidden settings/features
- charger scheduling tips with Ohme

Thanks again.. 🙂

Can someone explain what's the use on the black bar in digital dash? Kia e-Niro 2021

I don't see a mention of a sensor in the manual unless it's some safety feature?

Failed ICCU (EPCU ASSY) - 12v Battery won't Charge - Kia Niro 2020 EV w/107k miles

Greetings, my 2020 Kia Niro EV with 107k miles just experienced an ICCU failure (or 'EPCU ASSY' as the part is officially labeled as) causing the 12v battery to stop being charged. Think of it as an alternator failure! I'm quite frustrated and just wanted to get the community's thoughts on this.

The symptoms were that the car just completely died in the middle of an intersection while driving. It had started to display 'Check EV System' (or thereabout verbiage) error messages for a couple days, and then it just up and died. It turns out the 12V battery was not being charged, and after research it would seem the DC-to-DC charging box that's inside the "ICCU" had failed. Who knows how long the 12v battery wasn't being charged and how far I was able to drive it with a non-charging 12v battery before the whole car just died.

Anyways, after towing it back to the house, I was able to revive the car by first "jumping" the battery with a Chevy Bolt EV for about 30m, allowing the Niro's 12v battery to quickly charge up, and then subsequently leaving it connected overnight to a trickle charger to get it fully charged. I then drove it to the store and replaced the 12v battery with a brand new 12v AGM battery per some of the suggestions I read, indicating that an old 12v battery could be the problem rather than a broken ICCU. Sadly this did not fix the problem and the EV charging errors did not go away.

I then took it to a Kia dealership and paid them to diagnose the issue. They confirmed what I suspected: the ICCU needed to be replaced (specifically, part number 36601-0E190: https://parts.kia.com/p/Kia\_\_/EPCU-ASSY/121553273/366010E190.html). They quoted me about $4.5k total to replace it, $3.9k of which is the OEM part itself. A quick search online suggests I could get it for a lot cheaper at other sources, but still around $2k.

So yeah, that's where I'm currently at. I'm kind of mulling over trying to fix this myself, understanding the crazy risks with high voltage components, etc.

Really, I'm just super frustrated that the part failed at 107k, just a little over the 100k warranty period. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced such an issue with a M/Y Niro 2020 or thereabouts? I'm not sure what recourse, if any, there might be to reach out and try and get some compensation for this? Seems like it might be a recall issue if more people report similar problems. But as of now, there are no recalls for this M/Y.

There is an open-bulletin for 2023+ models of the Niro for this exact issue, this page describes it well:

Ok, thanks for reading!

Picked up this 2023 CPO Kia Niro EV in the Wave trim yesterday. 21k miles, not too shabby. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the grey panel at first, but it has already really grown on me!
I posted a question about highway driving but found out firsthand, because I ended up getting this at a dealer that was about 120 miles away 😬 It seems like range estimates dipped a little bit when I drove around 75mph, but nothing horrible. Granted, most of my drive was a traffic hellscape, and it was probably the warmest day of the year so far. But overall, the drive was so smooth!
I just purchased a wireless CarPlay adaptor dongle, and I also purchased a Level 1 charger (thought there was one in a little case in the trunk but that was the V2L adaptor 🤦🏼‍♀️) Getting quotes on a Level 2 install. Anything else to consider?
In sum, really loving it so far, and the family likes it a lot too! Feel free to drop any tips or things you wish you knew… this is my first EV so, despite doing a lot of research beforehand, I feel more clueless now that it’s in my driveway 🥴

Joined the Niro EV club

My old BMW almost broke down on the way to take a look at this car, so I had to buy and drive away with it. Had it since Monday and all good so far and nearly 4 years warranty left. Couldn't be more pleased.

Best value-for-money summer tires for 2023 Kia Niro EV?

Hey everyone, I’ve got a 2023 Kia Niro EV and I’m looking for the best value-for-money summer tires.

Main priorities are:
- good efficiency/range
- low road noise
- solid wet grip
- decent longevity
- not crazy expensive

I mostly do city driving + highway trips in Europe.
What summer tires are you running on your Niro EV, and what would you recommend (or avoid)?

The Kia brand does not respond or take charge of a car with factory defects.

I bought a new electric Kia eNiro at the GRUPO CERVERA DE AVILA dealership. The first day we took it, the car symbol with an exclamation mark in red was already coming out. Both GRUPO CERVERA ÁVILA and KIA IBERIA SPAIN HAVE WASHED THEIR HANDS AND NO ONE IS IN CHARGE. Outrageous and inexplicable that the KIA IBERIA SPAIN BRAND DOES NOTHING in the face of this problem. Although I bought the car at the dealership, the car was new and with a FACTORY problem!!!! Unheard of!!!! We are in the hands of lawyers and we are going to go all the way. When a car goes wrong from day one, the problem is factory and requires a change like any other product we buy.

Is $36000 a good OTD deal for 2025 Kia Niro EV Wind?

Hi,

I’m in California.

Is $36000 a good OTD deal for 2025 Kia Niro EV Wind? I had taken a lease and I still have a year to go but I am thinking of buying it out.

Is this a good deal? If I remember correctly, I had also got the $7500 EV credit as part of the lease but I am not sure, is there any way to check?

The $36000 is the initial downpayment + taxes + fees + 12 monthly payments (up to today) + advertised buyout quote on Kia Finance page. Am I missing some hidden fees?

Side note - I hate the fact that the car does not auto lock on walk away.

Thank you community!

Addendum - Now I am very confused, if a second hand Kia Niro EV is available for ~24k for a 20k miles 2 year used car, why offer me such a high buyout? Isn’t it obvious I would just return the lease and then buy another car? Even if the dealer wants to loot me, isn’t it really stupid for anyone to accept the buyout deal? Would they negotiate 20% lower on the buyout deal?

Refill inverter coolant message is driving me absolutely insane!

My 2021 has already undergone the warranty situation. My most recent trip to the dealership to refill my inverter coolant went well, and everything was fine for about a week. Then I started to get the dreaded refill inverter coolant message. My dealership doesn't want to take my car in to do the process again, they want to charge me for it. So now I am stuck with this message popping up 50% of the times I start my car. I am so f****** aggravated with this stupid message. Is there anything that can be done?

I'm in West Somerset, where there's a fair few hills and winding roads.

You hear people talking about motorway driving being less kind to range than urban but I don't seem to hear what the range is like for rural drivers.

Anyone enlighten me? Looking to get an E-Niro.
