Hi all,
I’m an international student in Victoria currently riding on an international licence. I recently got pulled over at a traffic light by two motorcycle police officers.
They told me my helmet (double D-ring type) wasn’t fastened correctly. I wasn’t aware I was wearing it incorrectly, as I hadn’t used this type of helmet before in my home country. One of the officers showed me the correct way to fasten it, which I appreciated, but I was still issued a $407 fine and 3 demerit points.
They also mentioned the demerit points would transfer to my Victorian licence once I get one.
This is my first offence here, and I fully cooperated and fixed the issue immediately after being shown. I feel like a warning might have been more appropriate, but I understand they can still issue a fine.
My questions:
Is it worth requesting an internal review in Victoria?

What grounds would apply in this situation (if any)?

Has anyone had success getting something like this downgraded to a warning?

Or is it more realistic to just pay the fine and move on?
Thanks in advance.

I got a ticket despite paying for parking for 2 hrs and the time I got the ticket was within those 2 hrs. The number plate on the ticket is one letter different than that of my car but the description was the exact same of my car. I have the receipt for paying. I just think that when they came to check the number plate and they typed the wrong one they thought I didn’t pay. When I searched the wrong number plate on service nsw it was completely different car from mine which further proves it wasn’t my car

Uninsured driver in a car accident

I was in a car accident today and only have CTP. I was changing lanes and the car next to me sped up and hit me. He has third party cover and is asking me to pay for repairs + replacement car.

In this case, can I refuse to pay? I’m broke and can’t afford the few grand it’ll cost

About 2 years ago I onboarded with this online company providing self paced certificates. I signed up for 2 of these and was paying 4700 on a plan. All well and good, was partway through these courses when the website shut down with no warning. Reached out via their website and their email and got nothing. Waited 2 months, didn't come back up. Reached out to fair trading and they said to cancel my card and that the company had gone into liquidation (shut down?). They cut the seevice so i cut the payment. That was a year ago. I've just gotten an email from a debt collector/lawyer not sure which saying i owe the remaining $2500 in the next 7 days. Do I actually have to pay that? Is there a way to fight it since they didn't hold up their end first?

Edit: calling fair trading first thing tomorrow. Additional advice still appreciated

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice regarding a situation with an overseas visitor insurance claim in Australia.

My father-in-law travelled to Australia, and we purchased an Overseas Visitor Cover policy starting from the day he arrived. Below is the sequence of events:

  • Day 1: Insurance policy started (same day he arrived in Australia)
  • Day 4: Developed food poisoning and visited an emergency GP clinic
  • Day 8: No improvement, visited GP again; ultrasound was done and results were normal
  • Day 12: Condition worsened; went to the emergency department. While waiting, he had a seizure and was admitted immediately, then moved to ICU
  • Hospital stay: Approximately 10 days (ICU + ward), then discharged
  • Returned to home country, but unfortunately passed away very soon after that.

The insurance policy states a 14-day waiting period for inpatient treatment. Since he was admitted on Day 12, the insurer has declined to cover hospital (ICU and room) costs (~$34K), stating it falls under the waiting period / pre-existing condition clause.

They have only approved GP visits and some emergency department costs. The major portion of the bill (after ICU admission) has not been approved.

I have been in continuous discussion with the insurance company. After a long back-and-forth, they suggested I escalate the matter to the ombudsman. After the ombudsman’s involvement, the insurer contacted me again for a review, but also indicated that the outcome is unlikely to change.

I have already paid the smaller approved bills. The remaining hospital bill has now been referred to a recovery/debt department. As I was listed as next of kin on hospital forms, they are contacting me frequently, and recent calls have been quite pressuring, which is causing significant stress.

Additionally, I have other financial responsibilities and do not have the capacity to pay this large amount from my side.

My question is:

If the insurance company refuses to pay, am I legally responsible for paying these hospital bills as next of kin?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I live in rural NSW/small town

My previous employer or someone associated with them said defamatory things about me, which prevented me from getting a job.

In small towns reputation is very important as evryone knows evryone and gossip spreads fast.

I know my resume is good and employeers like my qualifications as I have applied for jobs outside my town and I got called for interviews in all of them. But in my small town I get none.

Any advice is much apreciated.

Hi everyone,My roommate and I are both ndis participants and we are both possible looking into suing a company. I had a support worker take me to a train station 42 minutes away from my house as i were going away on the weekend, i got to the train station at 1:05 pm, my roommate calls me at 1:53 pm and tells me my support worker (male) showed back up to the house because he forgot his vape inside the house, he in fact had his vape in the car with me. Unfortunately he used that as an excuse to come inside the house and compliment my roommate and ask for her number and to go out, when she declined and walked him out he grabbed her butt(this is on our front door camera). She is planning on pressing charges as well as suing, i just learned that this support worker does not have a yelllow card or any qualifications, I have cptsd so for me I am pretty freaked out over this as i am also a young women with past trauma related to sa. I am also wondering if i would be able to sue as well as i am now feeling really uncomfortable about the situation that has unfolded as well as the fact that there was no yellow card or anything present. Thank you everyone

I had a final hearing for a FVRO against my ex recently. The order states they must remove their property from the home by the end of the month. They are demanding I or anyone else (apart from the agreed mediator) be present in the home when they collect their belongings. I won’t be there but was planning on having someone there to ensure they don’t go through my things or go in my bedroom. Everything of theirs is packed already. Sorry if this sounds rambling, I’ve never been in this position before. Thanks for your advice in advance.

I recently vacated a rental in NSW and the landlord is seeking to retain part of the bond for cleaning.

The property was cleaned to a reasonable standard and is consistent with the entry condition report, allowing for fair wear and tear.

So far, they haven’t provided an itemised invoice or receipt, just a general claim.

Am I entitled to request evidence of actual costs before agreeing to any deduction?

I received a written job offer for a senior position in Brisbane. The contract appears standard overall, but a few clauses are concerning me. These include a 12-month non-compete restriction, extended notice periods for both sides, and somewhat vague language around performance bonuses.

As someone new to employment in Queensland, I am unsure what is typical or enforceable here.

Is it worth paying for a professional legal review at this stage, or do most people simply sign and address any problems later?

Looking to connect with people who may have gone through something similar.

I’m currently dealing with the fallout of a whistleblower/privacy breach within a large organisation after raising concerns through an internal disclosure process. I’m still employed, however I’ve been on certified stress leave due to the impact the situation has had on my health.

I’m hoping to:
A. connect with others who have experienced similar situations,
B. hear perspectives from HR/legal professionals around possible outcomes, and
C. find a strong employment lawyer who is experienced in handling complex workplace matters involving large organisations.

Happy for people to comment or DM privately.

Thank you.

I’ve just received a letter for demand of repayment from my health insurance that requested me to pay an amount of money that was directly deposited into my account because their system has incorrectly assessed my claims for a while. The thing is that it’s quite a large amount of money and I don’t have the total amount right away. I have replied to their email to ask if I could repay the amount in installments. Does anyone know if insurance companies normally accept repayment in installments in cases like these? And if I manage to pay out the amount, will the case be escalated to police?

Found disturbing images on my ex’s Snapchat, what do I do?

Okay so bit of a backstory, I (18F) was dating my ex about a year and a half ago. At the time I was 15 and he was 17, the relationship continuing until I was 17. I found out he was cheating on me about 2 months after our 1 year anniversary, I had suspicions of him cheating on me the whole relationship. Anyways I found a reddit account login information saved onto his phone which I didn’t know about so I logged on, it ended up being like a porn account. I then found the email used to make the account which was a fake email he created.

I used that email to login to his fake Snapchat account where I found out he was cheating on me, messaging girls, sending nudes, saving nudes just nudes and porn saved into the memories on Snapchat and also sending my nudes along with others into Snapchat groups. We broke up after that but stayed living with each other for another year or something. He had that email for a bunch of different social media platforms so I ended up changing all of his passwords to the Snapchat, Insta, onlyfans and TikTok account so I could properly look through it and so he couldn’t delete anything.

Anyways coming back to now I still have access to these account because I feel like if I delete any proof of him cheating on me no one will believe me. I logged onto the account the other day to clear the account, the images, the sex tapes and came across something very disturbing. I found child material in his my eyes only, it was two videos and they barely looked over 15. Now I didn’t see that before when I looked a year ago but I use the email he used for the account so i can use it for my App Store since my account is band, also so he can’t access the accounts.

I wanted to take this to the police since I have access to all of the accounts but I’m scared I will get in trouble or blamed. Will I get in trouble for having access to that account even if I didn’t know that he had child stuff on there? Will they think the account is mine? I just don’t want to cop any backlash because I have access to all of the accounts and emails he used for that stuff. I feel like I really need to report it but not if it could get me into legal trouble as well.

I have text messages proving the accounts aren’t mine but I’ve regularly logged onto the Snapchat account because I liked to look through to see if I missed messages, also to make myself feel bad and to remind myself that he was not a good person. If anyone has any advice on what I should do please help.
