15+ years on eBay and I had to decline a sale today, seeking advice.

I started out on eBay in 2007, selling in 2009, haven’t done a ton of sales and took a long break from selling. Recently listed a bunch of watches for sale and a “grail level” Sony Discman if you’re an audiophile, specifically a Sony D-555.

I specifically did not post a picture of the serial number, knowing that any serious buyer would request that before bidding or accepting the BIN price, but within an hour I received one message from a buyer based in China with an offer and a couple hours later another account based in China(with a shipping address in the US) bought the listing with my “BIN” price and actually paid. Back in the day we would weed out scammers by canceling the sale with the “buyer requested cancellation” option and the scammer would never say a word and the item would re-list. I suspect now they have gotten smarter or more automated because I immediately got two duplicate messages questioning why the sale was cancelled. Do I reply?(The used car salesman in me says NO!) Will eBay simply accept the order cancellation and let the listing re-list like they used to do?

eBay has turned down Ryan Cohen’s unsolicited offer to take over its business.

Cohen told Business Insider's Sarah Needleman last week: "I'm going to continue doing whatever I need to do in order to buy the business." {He did state that he would go directly to the stockholders and make a hostile play, if need be.}

GameStop offered to acquire eBay for $125 a share in a cash-and-stock deal. For the cash portion, it pointed to roughly $9.4 billion on its balance sheet and a "highly-confident letter from TD Securities for up to $20 billion."

Cohen, who wants to serve as CEO of the combined company, said in his proposal that he could deliver $2 billion of annualized cost reductions within 12 months of the deal closing.

He added that GameStop's roughly 1,600 US retail locations would give eBay a "national network for authentication, intake, fulfillment, and live commerce."

Is this an acceptable method of shipping a shirt?

Is this an acceptable way to ship a t-shirt? The box is about 6.5in across, 4.25in tall, 2.75in deep. I really don’t have anything else in my house right now and want to try and avoid paying for a box etc at the post office. The shirt is folded and not shoved in fits kinda perfectly. Would obviously wrap it in a shit ton of shipping tape. Never shipped clothing before so wanted to figure out how a buyer might respond to this.

Buyer won auction then says its too much

Just looking for advice here with new eBay policy. I listed a card 01/10 for $49.99. I wasn't really sure of the price so I just threw it up for $50. Anyways, someone ends up bidding on it. Now the next day he says its too much and it's an overpay. I don't want my account to take a hit. Do you report the buyer or just cancel and move on?

Just calculated my actual profit on a £45 sale. It’s depressing.

Sold an item for £45. Felt good.

Then I actually sat down and did the math:

  • eBay final value fee: £6.12
  • Payment processing: £1.61
  • Shipping (what I charged vs. what it actually cost): £4.20
  • Packaging: £1.10

Net profit: £18.97. That’s before factoring in the time to photograph, list, pack, and drive to the post office.

I’ve been running my store for 8 months and I genuinely think I’ve been losing money on items I thought were “decent flips.mAnyone else only recently realize how brutal the margin actually is?

I listed a Furby a few weeks ago and last week this woman messaged me saying she wanted it so bad and that she’s going to buy it this week. So I figured she knew it was first come first serve and that if she did end buying it I’d package it up very well (I would have anyways). The listing didn’t get a whole lot of attention so I was surprised when someone else bought it a couple days ago.

She messaged me today and was very upset that it was sold and that it was unfair I sold it to someone else. I wasn’t going to take a listing down to “hold” it for someone that may or may not have bought it anyways. I blocked her after the last message.

Did I make the right move or do people “hold” listings for buyers if they ask?

Buyer wants to return shipped item due to “buyer’s remorse.” Can I decline?

Hi all,

I’m an infrequent eBay seller and usually only sell a couple items per year, so I haven’t paid much attention to all of eBay’s policies since everything has gone smoothly until now. A buyer recently paid me over $250 for a signed poster. I shipped it almost immediately a few days ago, and it’s still in transit with USPS. Earlier today, the buyer messaged me asking if they could return it unopened once it arrives.

I have a few questions about how to handle this. I’m not really in a position to comfortably refund $250+ for what seems to be simple buyer’s remorse. Realistically, the buyer could probably resell the item for the same amount or more, so I’d prefer not to be out that money over something outside my control.

  1. My listing was marked “Seller does not accept returns.” Can I simply decline the request based on that?
  2. Should I respond at all? If so, do I wait until they receive the item or go ahead and reply now?
  3. Is there any chance this comes back to bite me? Since the buyer explicitly stated they changed their mind, I assume eBay would side with me here (especially with a photo of the message), but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance for any help. Just curious what others would do in this situation.

Small eBay sellers: Are you promoting your items? If so, what %?

As a small seller who has 100 listings or less the promotion fees aren't sustainable. I've tried not promoting some items and didn't get views.

In another thread one seller said they were promoting everything at 2% despite the suggested promotion fee being higher. If anyone has experiemented with this I'm interested to hear what worked.

Buyer telling me I didn't pay the full postage (?)

So basically I (USA) sold an item to a buyer (UK) and i sent it via usps (it costed exactly how much the buyer had paid for the shipping, so i sent it via USPS). I bought the label via my ebay funds. And now the item is in the UK and he's saying that I've not paid the full postage. Is this even possible? He earlier asked to send it as a "gift" to probably avoid duties and fees and now I bet he needed to pay it and he's regretting to buy it. What do you guys recommend me to do? It's been so frustating :(

Buyer is asking for a refund

This buyer purchased a high ticket item from me after 24 hours he asked me to cancel the order and refund him which is impossible because the item has already been shipped. I also realized the address the item is shipping To is a hotel , the phone number on the order does not also work . He also lives outside the us . Is this some kind of new scam . He even offered me 50 bucks . I reported him to eBay but I don’t know the outcome and I am scared he will be scamming me . I need help and advice

Buyer ordered a stick of DDR4 RAM. Their first message was politely asking if it had been posted. I confirmed it had been. But then got this message today.

I don’t offer Royal Mail as a shipping option and he never enquired about sending it via RM. They also even selected the courier it was sent with.

Suffocation label required?

I’m in California and everything I sell I place in a clear plastic bag first. I’m wondering if I need to have suffocation labels on my bags? I’m also selling clothes and stuffed animals and wondering if the labels are especially needed there.
I obviously don’t want to waste material, time, and money if it’s not needed. Thank you!

Customer Service Line Gone

I have been selling on ebay for 20 years - I sell vintage firefighting items and fire toys / models. Recently the new AI has been deleting obviously not police things as "police related". I was on the phone yesterday with 3 different people in customer service. They agreed it was not police related at all, and would make notes to that effect. Today, I got the official decision, that my not police thing, is police. So I tried calling customer service (I have long paid a monthly fee for a store so usually get someone pretty helpful in a few minutes.) The have ebay contact you option is gone...anyway, this is all brand new it seems but totally changes ebay as a selling platform

They've supposedly been quietly buying eBay stock with plans to go directly to the shareholders if eBay isn't receptive. Of course, the WSJ sources are unnamed, and eBay is still under a monitoring order with the DOJ, which would add an extra layer of compliance. Seems like a long shot. But stranger things have happened. I guess time will tell.

Seller messaging me about shipping, but it is out of my control. What do I do?

I sold a jacket on May 5th and it is May 11th and the buyer is messaging me about shipping delays.

I know that buyers can see what shipping provider I use before purchasing, so I'm not sure why they didn't contact me beforehand.

This is out of my control, the only thing I can do is drop it off. Now they are asking me to contact USPS. I checked the tracking and there is no delivery date, just says latest update. What can I do?

Thanks in advanced.

Hello, I have this used Amazon box that is the perfect size for something I am trying to ship, but it has the Amazon tape. I have blacked out any barcodes and will reinforce the box, but I guess my question is whether the Amazon tape would be a problem?

Do I Have Any Options?

I shipped the item out the day after purchase and it looks like USPS dropped the ball; shipping hasn't been updated in weeks, so it's presumably lost. eBay refunded the buyer from my funds. Do I have any way to get that money back? I've gone through this before, but it's been a very long time and I think they've changed seller protections from what I can tell? Thanks!

Tracking says delivered, customer says they didnt receive anything

I want to do the right thing. My boss says if the tracking shows the package has been delivered, there's not much we can do.

But i don't want to ignore the customer and leave her hanging. I am torn. Should I believe the customer? I was told "anybody can just say they didnt receive their package, so we rely on tracking, and tracking shows it's been delivered. we've done our part."

Help?

I got an email from eBay saying the buyer has paid, website says otherwise.

So in the email it says the buyer has paid for the items and has given the shipping address and says the transfer of funds is on hold until I provide eBay with a tracking number(My plan is to ship it out tomorrow after work)

That said, on the eBay website, the order says that the buyer has not yet paid. I don't want to ship the items out unless the buyer has actually paid. Advice? I have everything I need to ship it out, and I'm supposed to give the shipping receipt to an @post.com email.
