What tools are actually worth spending money on vs going cheap?

After upgrading a few things in my garage I realized some stuff really doesn’t matter and some stuff absolutely does. Cheap ratchets? fine. Lifts and jacks? feels like a different story. Curious where people draw the line.

Tundra Tool Storage - Rear Seat Delete

2016 Toyota Tundra CrewMax SR5

Done as a weekend project with no specific plans…just built as I went based on months of imagining.

Deleted rear seats, replaced with plywood base utilizing 6 of the 8 factory seat mounting holes…(I planned on using all 8 originally, but a minor oversight between the planning and execution process left me with a grade of 75%, which was still passing when I went to school so I’ll take it!)

Lower cubbies for miscellaneous storage with an elevated platform for tool bag/material storage, and mounted packout plates on the passenger side (will additionally get straps over the packouts for added securement in the near future)

Conduit kicker up to the plywood backplate for added stability in the event I want to mount anything on the backplate for more storage.

This is just the first step in my work-truck conversion. I’ve got a Leer DCC truck cap and Rack-It rack on order that are expected some time in early June…until then, this will have to do!

What's a fair price?

My uncle died recently, and neither of his kids have any interest in his toolbox. Trying to come up with a fair price to offer.

It's a mix of stuff, some Tekton, Gearwrench, Craftsman, Icon, a little Snap On here and there. It's in a US General 5-drawer cart. It's all mostly in great shape, a few things here and there in well used but totally serviceable kinda condition.

There's also a few other things like jack stands and a jack, a serpentine belt kit, a set of spring compressors, a couple slide hammers, a bearing splitter and few other odds and ends.

They've offered me first dibs, but there's a little interest in their neighborhood too.

What's a good in the family price, and what's a good market value kinda price?

Grease for 1940s bandsaw

Howdy y’all. I have this 1940s Montgomery ward bandsaw that I recently stripped and refurbished and used all purpose machine grease on all the moving parts. While I was using it I noticed the top wheel was shedding the liquified grease and now the wheel doesn’t spin freely. Does anyone know what I should used to properly lubricate the wheels on this machine? There are no ball bearings , it is simply a rod in a (brass/bronze?) tube.

Anyone else use Hart Stack?

I've been slowly collecting these over the past 2 years. Every box was discounted to some degree. In total I've spent about $165. First modular storage system I've owned and mostly went with Hart because of the price. Overall, they've been great for the DIY things I do and I'm quite happy with the whole set. Kinda disappointed Hart is going away.

Got these three for $75 combined at an auction.

Band saw is in rougher shape than I could tell from the pictures, but can't wait to see if I can't get it in better shape and running. If not, it was $9. The Walker-Turner drill press I got for $21. The grinder was the most expensive at $44, but it's looks rarely used. The owner said he only used it to sharpen lawn mower blades.

My homemade solid 4-in-1 wrench. Can be abused a bit compared to a ratcheting 4-in-1.

How many of you folks carry a knife daily?

I mean just a knife at all, a tiny keychain knife, a pocket knife, a Sykes-Fairbairn, whatever? I've always carried a pocket knife of some sort.

Bought today for $500

Woke up to my MIL calling me her neighbor was selling a tool box and work bench. Had tons of new tools. She was super sweet and was glad it was all going to a new home. Cleaned up the bottom two. My nephew is going to school to be a machanic so I feel i should give him most of the tools I won’t use. I can’t find any comparable tool boxes online.

Milwaukee plastic junk mower blew up. Makita not even phased.

Cutting my backyard and I hit a rock (not a big one) and the plastic assembly just cracked apart. Couldn't believe it ...plastic junk. Milwaukee wanted 400$ to repair it (it's out of warranty). Picked up a Makita 64V 10Ah and the thing is so much better built it's hilarious. You still have some plastic parts but if they break it's not catastrophic ...

Anyways just a word of warning if you're a Milwaukee guy. Careful about the motor assembly part. No idea why TTI would not create smaller contact failure points. Literally junk now (400$ almost as much as a new mower without battery's).

The Best Can Opener

I don't remember when I got this can opener but I've had it most of my life. It works 100% of the time and doesn't take up much space in the drawer. It's one of my favorite tools. I've tried newer can openers and they are inferior. The one in the last pic has failed to fully cut the can open in one go around.
