What tools are actually worth spending money on vs going cheap?

After upgrading a few things in my garage I realized some stuff really doesn’t matter and some stuff absolutely does. Cheap ratchets? fine. Lifts and jacks? feels like a different story. Curious where people draw the line.

[Discussion] why does one bad day keep breaking my routine?

i can be consistent for a few days, feeling good, exercising, sleeping right, getting things done, then one stressful or overwhelming day hits and everything resets. suddenly i’m procrastinating, doomscrolling, sleeping late, and it takes days to recover. i used to think it was lack of discipline, but now it feels more like i don’t catch the spiral early enough, and by the time i notice it i’m already in it. has anyone figured out how to stay consistent even when a day goes off track, and recover faster instead of restarting from zero every time?

Have you started using AI drafting tools when drafting your patent applications?

Have you demo'd or purchased an AI tool? It's tough to say whether this industry is fairy dust or something experiencing rapid adoption.

anyone here looked into SPOT pet insurance for a puppy recently?

my partner and i are bringing home our first puppy next month and one thing i didn’t realize beforehand is how many pet insurance companies there are now. SPOT keeps showing up in comparison articles and older reddit threads so i’ve been trying to understand how people currently view it compared to the other bigger names. feels like every provider has people strongly for or against it depending on what kind of coverage they needed

what are people actually using to automate internal audits in 2026?

our ia team finally got some budget approved to evaluate ai tools next quarter. leadership is tired of us doing walkthroughs and testing in excel and wants us to automate the repetitive stuff. problem is every vendor on earth slaps ai on their page now and i can't tell whats real vs marketing. has anyone at a mid-size company actually put ai into their internal audit workflow in a way that stuck? curious what categories of tools are actually useful (data extraction, control testing, risk assessment, whatever). not looking for a sales pitch, just real takes.

what is the weirdest or most expensive thing your pet has ever done that made you question your sanity as a pet owner?

mine was seeing someone pay an emergency vet bill because their dog ate part of a couch, and honestly it made me realize how fast normal pet chaos can turn into a full financial disaster. between random stomach issues, allergies, dental cleanings, and pets acting like tiny demolition crews, it feels like every owner has at least one story that still hurts to think about. what was the moment with your pet where you just sat there thinking, how is this my life now, and what did it end up costing you emotionally or financially?

i help run operations for a small construction company, and every week i get supplier invoices, scanned receipts, and client forms in pdf format that i somehow need to turn into usable excel data. half the time the files are too large to email, scanned crooked, locked, or impossible to edit without retyping everything manually.

what services or tools are you all using to handle things like converting pdfs to excel, compressing files, merging pages, adding signatures, or making scanned documents editable before working with them in excel? i feel like there has to be a smoother workflow than what i’m doing now.

[Discussion] how do you celebrate mother’s day when she’s gone?

a friend of mine lost his mom last year, and mother’s day used to be a big thing for him. he’d plan gifts, call early, make sure she felt appreciated in a real, intentional way. yesterday he came over and asked me, very simply, what am i supposed to do this year? not dramatic, just honest. he said he’s been trying to treat it like a normal day, stay busy, not think about it too much, but it’s not working.

what’s hitting him the hardest isn’t just missing her, it’s the habit of loving her in that specific way. he used to do something. pick a gift, write a message, show up. now there’s nowhere for that energy to go, and it’s leaving this weird empty space. like all that care is still there, but it has no direction anymore, and pretending the day doesn’t matter just makes it worse.

i didn’t really have a perfect answer, but i told him maybe it doesn’t have to disappear just because she’s gone. maybe he can still write her something, or do something she loved, or even give a gift in her name. not to replace anything, just to give that love somewhere to land. if you’ve gone through this, how did you handle days like this?

Iso superfood supplement recommendations that are actually worth it... keep looking at these and running into the same two problems. 1 they seem overpriced or 2. you read the label and realize its mostly fluff with misleading marketing copy. i can def appreciate the you get what you pay for mantra, im not trying to buy the least expensive thing off the shelf, i just want to know which ones are actually worth it

Has anyone used the NetSuite AI connector to help with month-end close? I work at a small firm and we're constantly buried in close tasks. My boss keeps saying that AI is the answer, but I'm skeptical. I've tried AI tools before where I ended up spending more time reviewing and correcting the output than just doing the work myself. Does the NetSuite AI connector actually reduce the close workload, or does it just shift the effort to cleanup and validation?

i was talking to someone applying this cycle who’s already stressing about how expensive law school is, and they were saying it feels like most people just accept the cost and figure it out later. but at the same time, they’re wondering if there are smarter ways to reduce what you actually pay, like negotiating scholarships, choosing schools differently, or thinking more about financing upfront. curious how people here approached it, did you actively try to minimize total cost early or just adjust once you got in?

I’m in DevOps and trying to figure out how deep my AWS knowledge actually needs to go beyond the basics. AWS is huge: IAM, VPCs/networking, EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, CloudWatch, RDS, S3, CI/CD, Terraform... I'm considering Boot dev, KodeKloud, Pluralsight, and AWS Skill Builder. What would be enought to develop a foundation for someone with my background and which AWS topics are actually worth prioritizing for DevOps work?
