I thought this sub might appreciate something different. I have a little landscaping company I run on the side and wanted to add a new unit to the crew.

I wanted something that could do an acre of coverage on a single battery and have at least 200cc power. An engineer I spoke to mentioned to look at this beast. Also checked out Honda, EGO, Greenworks, and Toro. Decided to go Makita cause it had a quiet mode and I really liked the human ergonomics (speed handle right near your spare left hand).

Anywho thought you guys might like it. It produces about 3200W peak power, and the battery takes about 6hours to charge. I got an extra battery with it and a great deal so decided why not?

This unit may only be sold in Canada, I know USA doesn’t get as many Makita products due to the issues with imperial labelling metrics (at least what I was told).

Milwaukee plastic junk mower blew up. Makita not even phased.

Cutting my backyard and I hit a rock (not a big one) and the plastic assembly just cracked apart. Couldn't believe it ...plastic junk. Milwaukee wanted 400$ to repair it (it's out of warranty). Picked up a Makita 64V 10Ah and the thing is so much better built it's hilarious. You still have some plastic parts but if they break it's not catastrophic ...

Anyways just a word of warning if you're a Milwaukee guy. Careful about the motor assembly part. No idea why TTI would not create smaller contact failure points. Literally junk now (400$ almost as much as a new mower without battery's).

Is this why Makita & Hilti dominate tool rental departments?

I have noticed a funny trend no matter what tool rental shop I go to. Makita, HILTI, and Honda (all independent companies) are the majority of every rental department.

It's a funny contrast watching impact comparisons or listening to project farm rank tools based on power...to seeing what actually is quality in the stores.

TD173 vs DTD173 (XDT20) impacts

I loved this drill so much I got another one. Figured il post a little thread to help anyone undecided out.

You will notice in the video the international version (teal, DTD173 / XDT20) is higher pitch than the Japanese one (purple, TD173).

The larger clutch in the Japanese version (purple) makes it slightly heavier and allows it to use the JIS bits which our version cannot.

The japanese version can use international bits but it is slightly sunk (please see pictures I will post in the thread).

Otherwise these drills are identical besides colour options, and where it’s made (Japan vs China).

"if you want to kill yourself, you can just go to Canada" - Jaron pdcst #474

Was just listening to #474 and at the end around 57 minute mark Jarod goes "you could always fly to canada if you want to kill yourself easily." And I'm just thinking huh?? Am I listening to Rogan? Tucker? Far right esq podcast bro??

I'm here thinking if you want to kill yourself just go buy a gun from Walmart and shoot yourself. USA has a 30% higher suicide rate per capita than Canada. Why would you spend the time to become a Canadian citizen, the money on a plane ticket, go through months of legislation and paperwork, getting a physician to clear you for this...

Just curious, do Americans not realize how exhausted we are of American podcasters painting Canada in ridiculous lights? Like the amount of Rogan / Tucker/ etc (far right esq) banter on Canada.. do you not see how we can view this as foreign interference? There is already Americans pretending to be Canadians who left for a better life from Alberta.

Jaron I don't know who is in your ear...but I remember back when you were questioning Sam on his "TDS" and I thought that was weird. And the covid stuff.. but that little small sentence, that little jab at Canada ..on a podcast I am paying for to be more intellectually centred and not full of hysterics ... not a good look.

Do we have a Makita equivalent impact wrench?

These little 3/8 stubbies are incredible.. but I'm kind of only running this M12 platform for them and the inflator in my truck.

Would love to pick up a little powerful 18V wrench.

Any suggestions? Something not too big, max I would use it on is Tacoma wheels.

Thoughts on the LMX5300SP?

Hi everyone 👋,

I am adding some lawnmowers to my landscaping companies fleet. I have been experimenting with various brands the last few years (Milwaukee, Toro, possibly Honda next). I recently got a pretty cool 64V 10Ah Makita commercial grade mower and I was considering buying another one as my guys really like it. However, a sales rep from EGO I chatted with a while back highly praised the 5300.

I am currently heavily invested in both EGO and Makita and have found Makitas batteries are the best on the market for longevity.

I am wondering how those who have the commerical 5300 (12.0 x 2) have found the lawnmower? Have you had to service it in its 2 year commerical warranty? How's the durability and would you expect to have to replace it with a five year span?

I am very interested in the spec sheet (4kW and well over an acre of runtime), it is one of the only electric mowers that bests the Makita.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone.

After using EGO and Milwaukee lawnmowers for the last few years, I thought I would try something different this summer.

I happened to travel to Japan in October and talked with a mechanical engineer in Tokyo. He mentioned to check out this powerful lawnmower that can make 3.2 kW . I did, but back then it was 2700$ +CAD and I couldn’t justify the price, let alone a spare 10.0Ah 64V battery which was 1300$ itself..

A deal happened to come up this quarter for this lawnmower at half price and with a spare 10Ah 64V battery so I decided…why not? I like cool tools and I have never seen anyone with this machine. I have only ever seen the 18V’s, the 64V 4.0Ah and the 2 x 40V. All great lawnmowers in their own ways.

So here is my first impressions after a week. Firstly it’s an industrial lawnmower through and through. Your drive lever is a hard metal which doesn’t feel great on bare hands. Youl likely want to wear gloves or add soft rubber to it. The 10Ah 64V battery took about 4 hours to charge. There is no light on this machine for evening mowing and the only battery indicator you have is a charge icon that lights up only when you’re on the last bar. With the stock single blade, you’re likely not going to get the cut quality that you would on a dual blade EGO. You’re not going to be able to use this 64V 10Ah battery on anything else but the lawnmower (at least currently) like you could with Milwaukee or EGO. This is a one use battery platform. You’re not going to have tire tread on the tires like some EGO mowers… and unless you find an awesome deal like me, it’s going to be A LOT more money than even the top EGO lawnmowers with batteries and with less features.

HOWEVER , I will say…this is the most incredible lawnmower I have EVER used. I have no doubt that I could do my entire neighborhood on our cult de sac on one battery. I can do my 0.1 acre lot twice over without losing a bar. I love the vast selection of ride heights (10 options), the speed controls by your spare left hand, the fact you can go slow walking speed (1.5kmh) to fast walking speed (6.5kmh), I love the courteous “quiet mode” (feels so Japanese philosophy) and the industrial feel of the lawnmower…it feels like it’s going to be around for another 15-20 years with me. The big wheels, the vibrant but not loud colours, the grass level indicator bag, and simplicity. This lawnmower feels like the Land Cruiser of lawnmowers.

Would I recommend this to you?

If you want to do almost an acre of grass on one charge… this lawnmower should be considered. If you want the very best Makita has for cutting grass, this one is likely it. If you value Japanese quality and Honda isn’t doing it for you, the Makita is a fantastic option. If you want a battery powered option that feels like it’ll be around in 20 years, I think this is it.

Overall I would give it a 9.5/10 for its power, build quality, uniqueness, and thoughtfulness.

I would rate my EGO LM2206SP a 9.5/10 as well but for homeowner features and warranty, and my Milwaukee a 9/10 for its hybrid appeal of industrial homeowner esq. All three incredible tools but only one feels like it will be with me for the next two centuries

Got my Japanese TD173 a few days ago and it's an amazing little tool.

For those not familiar with Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), it's like our cross tip "Phillips". However, it is significantly different, and engineered to not cam out. You do need to try a JIS bits and driver to understand the difference, but it's phenomenal. JIS uses the same taper across all sizes, it is just a different section of the cone, so you can use the 'wrong' JIS size without risk of stripping the screw in a pinch.

These JIS drivers have slightly deeper chucks and so you'll want to use a JIS bit (~12-13mm) vs the typical 9-10mm we see in North America. You can use the typical bits (I have them on my bit carrier) but it will wiggle a bit. This driver will essentially be my "Philips driver" and il use my hammer drill for majority of the Robinson bits.

If you are planning to head to Tokyo Japan, check out Kohnan Pro, lots of awesome stuff.
