Is this a perforation or canal?

There was some bleeding from what I thought was the canal but my supervisor said it was a furcation perforation. The bleeding was coming from the dentin wall on the side so idk how it could be a furcation perforation because I didn’t even drill that deep either

What's your go to little hack for that you didn't learn in college, but now it feels so important and has made your work very easy?

Hello fellow doctors. I am an Orthodontist, but I have started doing fillings and Root canals also, and I think I am getting a hang of it.

I wanted to know, what are some tips and tricks some hacks that you apply to make your procedure easier for you, for the patient. It can be a very little thing, but what is something that is so easy that it almost feels illegal.

Kindly share your knowledge.

Hi I’m new here..✋

I got my braces on 4/4/26 for my gaps as you see in the above pictures. I got self ligating braces as recommended by my orthodontist. This might seem off as an cliche question but my orthodontist said that my teeth and the gaps would be perfect by in a year or less than a year and i was wondering whether it was actually true haha. Being insecure of my teeth, the only desire of mine is to get my gaps fixed as immediately as possible. I’d be getting braces for my lower teeth next week.

Recurring Dry Socket? Upper Pre-molar extraction smells ROTTEN on Day 6 (post-treatment), but pain is only 2/10. Is this normal?

Hey everyone, looking for some insight on a stubborn extraction site (upper pre-molar). This has been a long process and I'm confused about the "smell vs. pain" situation I’m in.

The Timeline:

April 9: Original extraction (Upper Pre-molar).

April 12: Developed Dry Socket. Dentist did "pinadugo" (scraped the bone to restart the clot), used a collagen sponge, and stitched it.

April 15: Started feeling like it was happening again (throbbing and a "peeking hole" in the stitches).

April 18 (Today): I am now 6 days post-scraping/treatment.

The Current Symptoms:

1.The Smell: It is ROTTEN. If I blow air from that side or move my mouth, it’s a pungent, foul odor. My breath feels terrible.

2.The Pain: Surprisingly low. It’s a 2/10. I’m not even taking Mefenamic today.

3.The Sight: The stitches never closed the gap. There is a visible hole/gap. The stitches look loose and have white/yellow "gunk" (debris) stuck to them.

4.The Taste/Debris: I have a constant salty taste. I’ve also noticed small, dark particles/flakes coming out of the hole onto my tongue.

My Questions:

• If it’s not hurting much (2/10), why does it smell like something is rotting? Is it possible to have an infection without intense pain?

• Are the dark particles just the old sponge/clot being pushed out by healing?

• Does the "salty taste" mean there is pus, or is that just healing fluid/serous drainage?

I’m seeing my dentist tomorrow (Sunday), but I’m anxious about why the smell is so bad if the pain is finally low. Thanks for any advice!

Did I commit a grave mistake?

I bymistake over used a chlorhexidine/ antiseptic gum gel prescribed to use only for 3 days 3 times a day by dentist for like two-three months on and off cause i thought it's good for general gum health. I knew chlorhexidine causes staining and antibiotics in any form you shouldn't take more than prescription cause it results in killing off good bacteria as well and bacteria buildup resistance to it but I didn't care enough to read what was written on the gel for long until recently when I was about to use it again and i realised i shouldn't actually be using it so often. I'm scared I caused permanent damage. Last time I visited dentist to remove stains she polished them off and I didn't know why back then I'm having staining.. now i feel that was the reason. But I feel still some yellowishness stains are remaining I hope it's not permanent and next time I go for cleaning again I'll tell dentist the truth of what I did I feel bad😭😓

Can some dentist please reply and tell if this would be permanently bad stained teeth because of that gel or no🫠

Need help

Hi, so I had a tooth abscess about 8 months ago. My dentist recommended a root canal treatment (RCT).

Since then, the treatment has been going on for a long time. Across multiple sittings (5+), she has been injecting the tooth(some antibiotics ig) which are quite painful.

Even after 8 months, the treatment is still not complete, and she continues to recommend these injections at each visit.

The tooth still pains if i by mistake eat something from that side and it's just baddddd

I’m starting to get concerned:

* Is it normal for RCT to take this long?

* Are repeated injections during multiple sittings standard practice?

Thank youuuuuuu

Why are associates paid poorly in India?

Why are dental associates paid less than a living wage in India? Even in metro cities it’s fairly less for the qualification that most dentists have, I’ve observed that many associates make within the 15-20k range in the first 5 years of their career.

How is this normalised?

The justification I’ve heard from dentists is that dental associates that pass out of colleges are usually incompetent and unskilled and that employing them is a risk for the practice owner.

If so, why can’t the dental curriculum focus its efforts on improving the competence of these dentists?

That involves at least just the treatment planning, diagnosis and referral skills.

Associate dentists in other countries make a lot more in proportion to the income of the practice.

And they aren’t usually specifically skilled or experienced at the time of their graduation.

(edit: what I can conclude from the replies is that being a dentist in India for the most part is like watching a house burn down.)

Is BDS (Dentistry) actually worth it in India? Need a reality check

My brother is considering doing BDS, and I’m trying to understand if it’s actually a good career choice in today’s time.

Would really appreciate honest opinions from people in the field:

- Is BDS a good career option in India right now?

- Is NEET compulsory for admission, or are there any alternatives?

- If going for private colleges, which ones are actually decent?

- What’s the typical fee range in private colleges?

- How much does it cost to open a dental clinic after graduation?

- How is the income and long-term growth?

Not looking for sugarcoated answers, just want a real ground-level perspective (pros, cons, struggles, competition, etc.).

Thanks!

Early gum receding - help

I am 23 and recently for the past two years I thought something about my smile looked off. I have an overbite and one of my front upper tooth overlaps the other. It’s a minor crooked tooth problem. While growing up I had a lot of candies and sticked it on my teeth for fun which I assume caused enamel damage so my teeth always looked unusually white in patches. Since then I’ve developed decent dental hygiene with brushing twice a day, cleaning tongue regularly and all. I’ve never had any plague and never was in a necessity to remove my wisdom tooth for the ones that came out for now have not caused much pain or harm. So I’ve naturally not been to a dentist like ever (shame me, I deserve it).

But for the last 6 months I’ve noticed gum receding that reflected on my smile. I have a wide smile and the one single upper front tooth that over laps the other has mild early gum receding. Probably dates to more than a year, but it’s more prominent now. I’ve realised that I brush harshly though with soft sensitive bristles so I’ve cut down on that. I’m planning to go to a dentist soon for the gum is sensitive and the aesthetic is just bad as my smile is horrible and this is giving me insecurities.

Is gum grafting the only solution for this? If so, is it safe in India?

How do you guys manage extractions with periapical infection?

I’ve been running into a recurring issue and wanted to hear how others handle it in practice.

In cases with clear periapical infection, even after multiple local anesthesia injections, patients still report pain during extraction. Achieving profound anesthesia becomes really unpredictable, especially in hot teeth.

For those with more clinical experience:

- What’s your go-to anesthesia technique in these cases?

-Do you rely more on nerve blocks, supplemental injections (PDL, intraosseous, intrapulpal), or something else?

- Any tips for improving patient comfort and cooperation when anesthesia isn’t fully effective?

- Do you ever defer extraction and manage infection first, or proceed anyway?

Would really appreciate practical, chairside tips that have worked for you.

Thanks in advance!

Invest in a basic rotary setup as a fresh graduate?

Hello I'm looking for some guidance here. I'm a fresh graduate. ive been working in a clinic for past few months and the clinic gives us to do every procedure aside from root canal. i understand RCT is a risky procedure and as an owner you wouldn't want someone else to mess up but I've been losing grasp on RCTs this way. I found a different clinic by an oral surgeon which is looking for a graduate who can do root canals for them. But since rotary is the standard now and it's something you don't get taught at school. Do you think it's a good move to do a small course on rotary and buy a bare minimum rotary setup to start practising ? Any inputs are appreciated.

What is the time when new clinics actually start earning some decent money ?

Hi everyone..A new practitioner here..It's been 7 months since I started my practice in a tier 3 city but the footfall has never crossed more than 15 patients per month. The rent is relatively cheap so I do cover it, I haven't paid any bills or salary from my pocket yet but there isn't enough left after that..It has really been bothering me now ..So fellow practitioners please guide me..Should I wait or think about a new place?

Dentist would your crown this tooth.

would you crown this tooth based on the remaining tooth structure.
