Gearing out question

After five years of Pilates - today as well as yesterday, I was “fussed at about gearing out the reformer” by two different teachers (both new to me). They each told me I had no reason for gearing out. I am 5’9” with long legs - I don’t do well without extra room for my comfort.
Is this new?! I was distracted by both of them just gearing it back in when I was on the mat. I didn’t want to argue in class and after classes they were unavailable. Did this happen to anyone else?

Thoughts on me (a man) doing pilates to meet women?

Hi. I'm a 23 year old man and I struggle to meet women to say the least. Unfortunately I am quite short and only slightly above average in the face and so I don't do well on dating apps. The few times that I have met women in person or in a format in which I am able to showcase my mannerisms, laugh, smile, make jokes etc. I have done pretty well. I have a long history with Omegle and I did very well with that. Unfortunately omegle is not a dating app and you can't filter by people that are near you. The very few times where I've gotten to interact with women in person I did well as well.

I've come to the conclusion that my issue is not having a reliable place to meet women in person and showcase myself to my best extent. I work a male dominated, manual labor intensive job. I don't really have female friends and haven't since early on in college and I actually had a thing with one of my female friend's roommates but we didn't work out and the friend picked her roommate over me and so I lost my female friend in that way. I often hear the advice that goes something like "join a club or hobby group and make connections through there." This is what I intend to do. I am considering joining a pilates club as that would probably expose me to the most women. Now one might ask "would you even join if there wasn't women" and the answer to that is no. I go to the gym actively but I prefer more traditional methods of fitness but I am excited to see how difficult it really is and burn lots of calories. One might suggest me to join hobby groups that interest me seperate from the women being there but the truth is all the things that interest me are very male dominated. (Highly doubt there is going to be many women in a Warhammer 40k club) Any thoughts or suggestions?

A "Karen" in my class

Was in a full Flow 1 class last week and a woman complained to the instructor that she thinks the classes are too easy (it was her 3rd ever Pilates class). The instructor tried explaining the principles of Pilates but the woman just kept whining. So the instructor went wild with the exercises. Did a lot of stuff I've never seen before (I've done about 12 classes). We even did the TRX. It was a great workout but also I could tell a lot of people were struggling. At the end, the instructor said something snarky to the woman about hoping she finally got a good workout.

I'm mixed about how to feel. On the one hand it was a good workout and was kinda funny. On the other hand, I felt the instructor was ultimately unprofessional about it. Not to mention most of the exercises (especially the TRX) were not beginner friendly. I've been debating if I should say something to her or to the studio owner. Thoughts?

L2 classes

Just curious what you all frequently do in your L2 classes? Sometimes I feel like they are (what I call) pretty pilates and sometimes I feel like they are more like calisthenics. I LOVE the classes where we do chair work, pikes, snake, reformer work, star on it, etc. But then lately the L2 I used to love is all about lunges while using the springboard, bridges while using the springboard, so many arms on the springboard.....

I know people love it, but I also do strength training at a regular gym. I like pretty pilates at pilates, I don't need to do my arms on a springboard or "chest press" with 5lbs.

Sometimes I wish you could know what your class is doing before you go. I LOVE the pretty pilates classes but if it's all springboard and squats I'd skip it!

Love CP, the fees-not so much

So just making sure I’ve got this right. If I cancel, there’s a fee. If I don’t show, there’s a fee. But if an instructor cancels last minute, it’s just “too bad”? Is there any member credit or benefit applied in that situation? And please don’t get me started on the waitlist protocol of CP being allowed to add you as close to TWO HOURS hours before the class, and if you cancel or miss the same predatory practices $25/$15 will penalties occur.

Plus size friendly?

Hey everyone!

I’m a size 24 (35F) and I scheduled an intro class. Is this even something I should try out? I’m really looking to improve my core strength, flexibility, and mobility and Pilates seems perfect for that.

I’m so scared of 1) being judged for my size and 2) not being able to do anything in the class. I’m very out of shape, but I have to start somewhere. The idea of Pilates excites me, but is this something I should hold off on, or have you seen success with other plus size members?

Referral Code?

Hi all,
I am searching for a new Pilates studio and my MIL goes to Club Pilates. I was wondering anyone has a code while I’m signing up that I can use? Their 30 min intro class seems a little silly. Does anyone have one that I can use? In NJ if that matters :)

Class count not updating

Anyone else having an issue with their class count not updating in the app for the last few days? It’s not for me, and I heard another person in my studio mention it, so I’m wondering if it’s a wider issue.

Instructor missed classes

I've been a member for right around a month. Since then, the instructor was late, and two missed their classes. Is this normal for instructors to do this? I understand life happens and it's possible, but this seems like a lot in just a month.

Results with the 8 pack?

Hello all! My local sculpting studio is closing and I'm considering the 8 pack. The problem is that our studio is busy and I would only be able to get into classes the last two weeks of my billing cycle. Anyone else in this situation? The 'result' I'm looking for is to maintain my lifted butt. Is this possible doing 8 classes in two weeks? I do plan on supplementing with a 3/5 day strength split and 10K+ daily steps. I'd do unlimited, but I really need to devote time to cardio and stretching at this point in my life.

I’ve worked in fitness for years and honestly… I think a lot of people don’t actually need harder workouts.

Most people are stressed, tense, overwhelmed and struggling to find time for themselves in the first place.

That’s one of the reasons I started focusing more on Pilates and slower, intentional movement.

I’ve seen people improve their posture, reduce back pain, feel calmer and more connected to their bodies just from consistent, gentle movement they can actually stick to.

Would genuinely love to know though, what’s the biggest thing that stops people staying consistent with movement/exercise?

Passport membership

Has anybody with passport just moved and not canceled your membership with your old studio. I have had passport for years and pay a very reasonable price. (think less than a new unlimited membership costs). I am planning to move out of state soon and only utilizing several studios that are near my new home. I originally got passport so that I could go to different studios when I spent the winter in warmer climate away from home. When winter is over, I mostly use my original home studio. My question , do I have to cancel my membership there or can I just continue paying what I pay now to a studio I will no longer be going to? I would really hate to have to join a new studio, pay so much more and pay a sign-up fee. A long time ago they used to transfer memberships, but I know they don’t do that anymore . So has anyone just moved and never changed their home studio?

Is there a huge difference going from flow 1 to 1.5? A lot of the 1.5 classes work better for my schedule.

But I’m also a bit scared to sign up for 1.5s! I’m about 8 weeks into my membership and have been going to 2 classes per week.

Should I keep going to my Control 1.5 class?

Hi yall! I’m about 40 classes in now and I go 3-4 times a week, usually 4. I go in the mornings since that’s the only time that I’m free, so I take 3/4 classes a week with the same instructor.

This instructor is known for being “tougher”/having harder classes (a little less explaining and quicker transitions, lots of progressions), but I’ve been active all my life (I’m a mid 20s F), so I feel like I’ve kept up really well in her Flow 1.0 classes. I feel very comfortable in those (but still a little challenged at times!)

Recently, I’ve begun taking her Flow 1.5 classes and I also do pretty well, but I’m definitely more challenged (my muscles definitely shake during these classes!) but I still keep up decently. I do one of her 1.5 classes a week. All of her Flow classes are usually full.

Recently, my studio added a 1.5 control class with the same instructor and I’ve gone twice so far. It’s probably cause it’s new, but these classes are not filling up (last two classes were at half capacity).

I definitely noticed I struggle more in these classes. The exercises are different than what I’m used to and the progressions are different than what I expected from her previous classes. I do *not* think I’m struggling *more than* the other people in the class though. Today the instructor expressed some frustration because basically everyone, including me, was struggling with a move. She also had to walk me and another classmate through a move at separate times. Once I understood the move I could do it, but initially I did not understand it.

Should I stop going to this class?

TLDR: I like the time Control 1.5 is offered since it’s more convenient for me than her Flow 1 later in the day, but I do wonder if I’m ready for it since I’m not fully understanding some moves from the jump. That said, I’m not the only one struggling in the class and it’s not like I’m taking the spot from another individual since they’ve been at half capacity so far.

I’ll likely ask her tomorrow, but she’s intimidating to me lol so I wanted some other opinions first!

Edit: you guys have been so encouraging in the comments! Thanks yall 🫶🏼. I’m going to continue taking the class and provide some feedback to the studio/instructor if the teacher doesn’t tune her plan a bit to meet the class where we’re at. I’m also going to try some more instructors too!

Last minute class cancels

This is not a member rant ;)

I am an instructor that never takes time off. I have literally taught every Sunday except Easter for the past 10 months, only missing one of my other shifts 1 time for food poisoning.

In the past month one of the CPs I teach at has had to cancel the 1st class of my shift due to a bad accident that had me trapped on the expressway with no exit. Literally all cars in park, no one moving for an hour.

Sometimes it is just out of our control, but I still feel awful about it.

I see all the posts about class cancellations and sometimes life just happens. Sure there are instructor woopsies, but this business model is not set up to account for these situations well.

Hello Everyone,

I just took an intro class at a Club Pilates and I’m planning to make it my main form of exercise.

I’m a complete newbie to this and prior to this I barely worked out.

My goal is to lose weight, (About 25-30 pounds), improve flexibility, and improve stamina.

Since I’m just starting out, would rotating between Reformer 1 and Center+Balance everyday be viable for a complete newbie?

I would like to do lessons six days a week, so my schedule would look like this:

Monday: C+B 1
Tuesday: Reformer 1
Wednesday: C+B 1
Thursday: Reformer 1
Friday: C+B 1
Saturday: Reformer 1
Sunday: Rest Day

Is this realistic for a beginner? I wanted to incorporate C+B every other day in the beginning because I heard it’s good form of recovery. And since I’m out of shape, I thought this would be good to rest my muscles while still remaining active.

And as my body becomes acclimated to Pilates, I’ll start to wean off the C+B classes and go mostly to the reformer classes everyday instead.

Is this a good plan?

Studio keeps cancelling classes last minute - is this normal?

I recently joined a studio with the 8 a month plan - which required a three month commitment up front. In the three weeks I’ve been a member 4 of the 7 classes I signed up for were cancelled within less than 12 hours of the class occurring.

It’s the only location in my area and I don’t have the most flexible schedule for classes later in the day (all the classes that have been cancelled are early morning ones ). For my last class I can take in this billing cycle, I only have a few windows of available time — if they cancel one more class, is it fair to ask for it to transfer to the next months count?

And is this a normal practice???
