Hey y'all,
I play keys in a jazz fusion band, (think Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, psychedelia with lots of interplay).
I noticed that I tend to lead most of the solos, which makes me feel a bit guilty. What I love about this style is that moment where everything blends together and it's hard to tell who's leading, just pure interplay.
I talked to our guitarist about it and she mentioned that when she takes a solo, she sometimes feels stuck or falls back on muscle memory, especially over static harmony or minimal chord changes.
I offered to do some work with her 1 on 1, but I realized that my entire concept of soloing comes from the perspective of a keyboardist, and I don't want to give advice that doesn't translate well to guitar.
So, I'd love to hear from guitarists;
What helps you break away from muscle memory?
How do you approach soloing over static or minimal harmony?
Is there anything a keyboardist can do in a band setting to help inspire you or make soloing feel more open?
Any insight is appreciated 🙏
