Wow! You guys are awesome. Here are some more pictures.
Sorry but I posted my plants the other day and didn't expect much attention so I didn't check Reddit until like two days later.
The parent plants are obviously the big boys up top. They're almost 3 years old and I believe they were originally planted 2-4 plants per pot, but I bought them so I don't know.
I water them every 7-10 days depending on the sun and wind that week. I'm in the Midwest and they can get 3-6 of direct sunlight per day, and plenty of indirect light. I have fertilized them once or twice in their lifetime but I used really diluted miracle grow fertilizer. They're all extremely root bound (last pic) and I need to size up their pots but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I have had at least 800 spiderettes because I own almost 100 plants. The last time I took cuttings, I pulled 136 and that was maybe a quarter at the time. I put them all in cheap plastic pots and the cheapest soil I can buy and I water them with a hose. I am never taking that many cuttings again.
One baby is suuuuuper variegated and I'm curious to see how it grows. It is currently rooting so it is going strong. If anybody knows more about that one in particular, let me know. I have only had 1/800 grow that white.
Meet Imogen! 🪴
I found this beauty at my local nursery about a week ago and I'm in love. The first photo is from the day we brought her home (banana for scale) and the rest are from today and her propagating babies. She is my first spider plant, so I'd love any tips, tricks, and advice y'all might have.
I used dechlorinated tap water for her first drink and plan to start collecting rain water soon to keep her green and happy. I did cut the brown tips of her leaves with sterilized scissors and have used them for collecting her babies as well. I have already started giving away cuttings (12 so far) and have three propagating in dechlorinated tap water, but she has plenty of spider babies left.
I've seen that they start producing babies when they are root bound and happy, but I'm not sure if I should repot her? She is massive and looks happy with the size pot she came in, so I planned on waiting until her roots start escaping out of the bottom. I'm just not sure if that is the best call.
Additionally, she does have a couple of naked stems now that I have given away some of her children, should I cut them off or will she continue producing pups off of them?
She currently lives on top of a book shelf about 10 feet away from a window facing the west, but I was hoping to install a heavy duty hook in that window so she can live above our kitchen sink. I know they can get scorched leaves in direct sunlight, so I would install a sheer curtain or window film to block the direct light in the evening and insulation + a grow light during the winter to keep her warm. There is a tree right outside of the window, so most direct light is blocked anyway, but I want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake with this move. I'd honestly be devastated if I killed such a beautifully established plant.
Thanks in advance!
Here's about half of my spider plants.
I have lost count of how many spiderettes there are. These are beastly.
Is this pot good?
I have this pot with several babies growing together. I am planning on giving this to someone, so I want to repot so she doesn’t have to for quite a while. I am using a chunky mix. Will this pot size work or should I go larger ? I think there are 4 or 5 babies in here, that have been growing for few months. Original pot is 3.5 inches and larger one is about 4.5 inches. I am just worried about two many plants smothering each other.
Thanks
She needs helps and so do I (new to propagation)
Hello everyone ! I bought this monster 2 days ago. I thought it was a theft when I saw her for 30$ cad, thinking infinite propagation. The only thing is, I didn’t realize how MANY she had.
The stolons are yellow, so my guess is that they are dying and taking too much nutrient from the mother, and im scared she’ll die.
I was able to cut about 20 pups, and put them in water
BUT SHE’S STILL FULL
What should I do 🥲
**Edit: I realized I maybe wasn’t really clear in my request for help. So here are a few questions I have:
- What does it means that the stolons are yellow ? Will the mother be okay ?
- There’s a few babies that started having their own ( how that possible??) if I cut the first baby, will the other still grow ?
- Can I put multiple babies in the same water or not ? I realized how bad it is for the leaves because I put them in a bowl (don’t have enough cups and some have tiny leaves but big nodules so I had to buy new pots)
That seems to be it for now :)
I Want Babies!
I got this plant a year ago and she was so small. She grew to this size and hasn’t produced a baby. Is there anything I can do to quicken up the process? Are we even close to having a baby?
Unsure how to help my plant stop drooping and yellowing
Please be kind as I’m a new plant parent.
This little guy was water propped a while ago and potted in this strawberry pot with drainage. It was very happy in there until I recently tried to pot up a size. Even though the new pot was only about an inch bigger than this one, the plant seemed to be suffering from the change. I think the problem was soil that got too compacted so it was overly moist for about a week.
At that point I took the plant out, inspected the roots, which fortunately weren’t rotted, and put it back in its original pot with fresh dry soil. I did a very slight water to settle the soil, and hoped that would help the little guy. But he still isn’t doing great.
I’ve never seen him this pale, and leaves keep yellowing. Do I just let him adjust or is there some way I can intervene?
Soil is a mix of orchid potting soil (I’m broke and it’s what I have on hand) and I added some perlite hoping it would dry out a bit better.
My new baby
Found the most amazing local nursery and got this one for $22 which I personally think is a steal
Spider Plant Stem Damage
Hello yall. My spider plant has been growing this baby for a couple months now. In transport, the stem got caught on something and now there is damage. It’s to the point where it’s better off for me to cut it off.
My question is, is this baby still viable? There aren’t any roots visible. Would propagating this baby work?
This is my first spiderette so I’d be heartbroken if it’s not ready to be separated. Let me know if I’m too worried about nothing again.
1,500 spider plant seedlings - if it aint odd, compost it i say
If it aint odd its gotta go to the compost box to feed the weirdos is my motto as of now due to scale and lack of space haha, sooo we have THE BEFOREEE then im keeping a good bit of all green bonnies simply because i didnt have any in my collection and none of my friends have them either so ill be giving them out to family/friends but they also come from 2 different crosses pic 2 is all green standard leaf spider plant x white midline bonnie spider plant. Pic 3 is white edge standard leaf spider plant x white midline bonnie spider plant
Now these ones are my ‘ oddities ‘ so far, pic 4 is the only seedling that grew out of a pod that had 4 fully formed seed chambers instead of the normal 2-3 chambers. And i legit had a 900+ pod sample size, it being the ONLY 4 pod to appear. So this one visually isnt distinct yet although it did randomly pop a splotch of white on one of its leaves? Its really being kept in hopes that it continues to reproduce 4 pod seed chambers instead of the standard 3 max. Its also an all green standard leaf spider plant x white midline bonnie spider plant seedling.
Pic 5 ( and 7 ) are of an all green standard leaf spider plant self fertilized and both are showing striping that is not in the middle nor edge but still faint in color
Pic 6 ( and 8,9,10 ) are of all green standard spider plant x white edge standard leaf spider plant. 8 are of the ones currently showing up noticeably lighter than the rest of them - 9 sprouted out some random lines out of nowhere because its first like 4-5 leaves were just normal green lol - 10 has shown odd striping since leaf 1, actually its first leaf was almost a halfmoon so its slowly been reverting to either all green or normal line since it was a baby.. i still carry hope that it gets weird again as it matures though because IMAGINE A HALFMOON SPIDER PLANT!! Wow…
Pic 11 BONUSSS!! My main main oddity in the middle with hawaiian to the left and an all green to the right, figured id throw it in so yall could see what i see or call me crazy hahaha, to me its objectively different even down to when you zoom into the leaves like the veins look different but im also very very hopeful for oddities and the mind is powerful i could be tricking myself hahahaha
HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE UPDATE!! More to come((:
This is how we spider on the Central Coast
I wasn’t sure this idea would take off. All my spiders came from one mother plant I had saved and was completely root bound. Crawling spiders ground cover 🩵
My baby is having a baby
The will to reproduce is strong for some.
brought this guy to my office to save it from a plant loving cat. Not sure if I’m over or under watering it. I just repotted as well. I do have a grow lamp on during rainy days.
leaves are bending, it’s flopping to one side and no babies even though it’s a year old and was root bound in previous pot. Pots do have drainage as well.
any ideas?
My curly spiderplant lost its curls. I keep plant moist, only water when dry. Chunky mix. No full sun. South florida under gazebo. I hear these plants are finicky but easy to grow.
Need help caring for Spider Plant
Hi, guys! I got this spider plant about 3 weeks ago. She was beautiful and big and had a few shoots growing some spiderettes (I did not take any pictures of her when I first brought her home). She was doing great for the first week- her soil was still very moist and she seemed happy. Then I started to notice that her leaves were browning, but since her soil was still moist, I assumed she may have wanted to be closer to the window and just needed some more sunlight. She seemed to be getting worse there so I moved her back to the other side of the TV stand that you can see the edge of in the pictures provided that is further from the window. Again, she was not doing well and everything I read online seemed to point to her actually needing more light. Tried her on the side she is currently on that is closest to the window and she was looking horrible still. Despite her water still retaining a bit of moisture within the first couple inches, I watered her. She still looked horrible so I decided to trim off the dead leaves and ends and a few of her bigger shoots to help her conserve her energy. I have left her alone since then but even after those cuts, her tips have begun to brown again. Just not sure what to do for her and want to save her. Is it possible she is just a very thirsty plant? I also got a Watermelon Peperomia and Boston Fern that are doing well but need to be watered more frequently than you might expect for each of them. I live somewhere very hot and humid with lots of sun. The window she is closest to is a north-facing window and there is also a west-facing window that’s a bit smaller and further away.
Possible solutions I am considering:
-Repotting her in a smaller pot
-Cutting off her browning tips again
-Moving her closer to or further from the window
-Watering her again even though her soil is still slightly moist within the first couple inches
I've had this spider plant for probably a decade. As a teen, I unfortunately neglected her as I didn't have a green thumb whatsoever. She was starting to look like she was going towards the light, so I had to try and save her.
Almost two years ago, she was down to just three very sad leaves and had root rot, so I decided to take her out of the soil to see if she grows some roots in water. I put liquid fertiliser in the water every other water change, and this is the first time she's grown pups.
Now, she seems to be loving life, and I am curious if I could keep her in water forever? I assume she would be more luscious if grown in soil instead, but I'm scared that if I put her in soil, she will die again (though I am a little better at keeping plants alive now)
Any advice, please?
So I’ve repotted him 3 times, he’s huge, I think he needs a bigger plant put but that means relocating him to the floor as my window sill isn’t big enough for a bigger plant pot! I also don’t have any floor space next to natural light. I water her weekly, I know she isn’t meant to be watered too much, so I make sure the top couple of inches in the soil are damp and the rest is dry. I also have plant feeder I use fortnightly. I think he may be root bound but if there’s any other advice please let me know!
