How many cool points do I get beating Cynthia a bit underleved, no mid battle healing and no held items and on set?

It never dawned on me why people found her terrifying and hard. Though it did take me a few tries beating her admittedly. But still, she wasn't that bad.

Losing my mind

Just passed 9x odds on Piplup. I started this hunt in the Summer of 2022 and this is by far the longest hunt i've ever done. Is it even real? I see the sparkles in my sleep, i see this penguin everywhere i go. He's taken over my social life, my work life balance is gone, i divorced thrice, my kids don't want to see their old man anymore because he's incapable of finding a silly discolored pocket monster.

I'm one with the piplup, the piplup is one with me.

He's in my walls, i can see him taunt me in my dreams.

Will it ever end?

99% of gamblers quit right before they win big.

(No but seriously, 73.730 resets so far, we can't stop now)

((Thanks for listening to the rants of a madman, I'm starting to sound like that one crazy mage in Skyrim))

Ability-a-Day #34: Hustle

Hello and welcome to Ability-a-Day! The series started by u/ianlazrbeem22 & u/zG-FuRy plus continued by myself.

Previous day: Ability-a-Day #33: Huge Power

Today, we have Hustle, this ability boosts the power of physical moves (or the Attack stat) by 50% (x1.5) while lowering their accuracy by 20% (x0.8). Special and status moves aren't affected by this ability. This ability is used by Togepi, Togetic, Togekiss, Corsola, Remoraid and Delibird.

Hustle somehow boosts the self-inflicted confusion damage in this generation as well. This ability seems difficult to use as Togekiss wants Serene Grace more than Hustle, Corsola likes Natural Cure Better than Hustle as well. While Delibird prefers Hustle more than the others, as it gives a strong Aerial Ace without Hustle lowering its accuracy thanks to that move ignoring accuracy (and evasion) checks.

Outside a battle, if a Pokémon with this ability is in the first slot in the party (even if fainted), there's a 50% chance that a wild Pokémon will be forced to the upper bound of their encounter level range. This may help to get some rare enounters in some places.

Overall a somethat good ability, but Serene Grace is way more better having doubled seconary effect more than 50% more power with physical moves (Togekiss having a 50 Base Attack). In the next generation, Darumaka (also its Galarian form in Gen 8), Durant, Deino & Zweilous get Hustle while Rattata, Raticate, Nidoran (both male & female), Nidorina, Nidorino and Combee got it as a hidden ability, in Gen 6 Ruffled got Hustle as a hidden ability as it was currently unavainable in Gen 5. Gen 7 was given it to Alolan Rattata and Raticate, then in Gen 8 to Flapple (as a hidden ability) and Dracozolt and finally in Gen 9, Squawkabilly and Hisuian Lilligant. Tell me your thoughts about the Hustle ability by giving it a comment.

What do you think about Hustle, have you used it successfully? If anything I'm missing? Just let me know!

What do you guys think of the Dream Team

Starting in 2021 of October with my first ever shiny hunt in a main series game, I did NOT think it would have taken me this long to get to this point. To be fair, ever since relieving myself of the starter soft reset my luck has been pretty astronomical (aside from resetting Giratina at 10950 resets😅)

Fun Fact: The Staraptor, Weavile and Ralts were all PokeRadar finds to replace my non-shiny team members and the Ralts was encountered on a 1 chain… Video is on my phone and if for some reason the people wanna see it i’ll post it.

Let me know what you guys think of the team and thanks for reading❤️

P.S. I am still in the process of getting Weavile and Gallade up to speed hence their lower levels :)

Beat Platinum with a new and underleveled team

Second run through since I started playing again. Ever since I learned about natures and EVs, I wanted to do a run where I actually got the right natures and EV trained my team. Gotta say it made a big difference. Don’t think I’ve ever flew through the game like that before. Had to reset 3 times in the Cynthia fight but was able to beat her with no heals and some lucky crits. Lmk what yall think of the team.

Difference with fake copies

Unfortunately, I have just recently discovered that my copy of Pokemon Platinum is very likely to be fake.

I’m NOT asking if this game is real or fake, I just want to know more information about fake copies.

I want to know if anyone has experience using these fake copies, and how it might affect gameplay.

I’ve heard of issues with saving, and IR functionality, however I currently have a save on the game which seems to be working fine, and I’m not sure what IR is or how it’s used in game.

I bought it a few years ago but I don’t remember where from, I haven’t had any issues with it but I have also barely played it.

Any help would be appreciated!

The way I play through these games is absurd

Just wanted to share the horrible way I play through these games I won these battles but all but one of my team members died by the end. But I still haven't lost a battle!

Breaking the Binary - Bibarel

Welcome to Breaking the Binary, a sporadic series of posts all about mixed attackers in Pokémon Platinum. With competitive minmaxing dominating the conversation about Pokémon viability and the design philosophy behind movepools changing in newer gens, Pokémon are often rigidly divided by the fandom into the categories of "special attacker" or "physical attacker." But for the in-game story, you're not facing EV trained opponents and thus don't need to EV train to keep up, so mixed attacking sets don't have the opportunity cost they have in PvP. Going mixed still has anti-synergy with setup moves, but it still can give many Pokémon access to STAB moves with better base power, strong coverage moves with useful types, and more useful niches. This series will be covering those applications. We won't talk about every Pokémon here, only ones that I believe legitimately benefit from going mixed, but those Pokémon are surprisingly large in number. Today we'll be talking about Bibarel. I'll be talking about in-game but feel free to discuss PvP or battle facilities as well.

Bibarel is a Normal/Water Pokémon with middling stats, including 85 Atk and 55 SpA. Its notable physical moves include Return, Rollout, Superpower, Dig, Pluck, Quick Attack, and Waterfall. Its notable special moves include Ice Beam, Blizzard, Surf, Thunder, Charge Beam, Shadow Ball, Grass Knot, Shock Wave. Useful utility moves include Yawn, Curse, Super Fang, Amnesia, Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Defense Curl.

Bibarel's poor SpA makes its mixed potential limited, but the types and base power of its options mean its mixed potential still exists. Surf is available long before Waterfall and has 95 base power, STAB, and an excellent typing. Ice coverage, which pairs very well with Water STAB, only comes in the form of special moves for Bibarel. Most water types want ice moves, so dipping into that 55 spa is Bibarel's only access to that key type. With poor SpA, the high base power of moves like Blizzard and Thunder makes a big difference though, so you mostly have to run those risky moves to get good damage output from it. Ice Beam is passable on it but Blizzard's power makes it worth the risk. It also has some other coverage moves on the special side, and combining those with Charge Beam can be a funny meme on it with Simple, but in my opinion Ice coverage is the only worthwhile reason to dip into Bibarel's special movepool and deviate from its stronger builds like Curse and/or Amnesia sets. Using utility moves like Yawn or Super Fang along with 3 attacks, or just slapping Amnesia on there, works out fine for Bibarel overall, and Ice is likely its best coverage type. Bibarel also goes mixed in the earlygame when it gets Water Gun but also has Tackle, Quick Attack, and CurlOut, but this is mostly for a lack of other options.

What do you think of mixed Bibarel? Is it worth exploring? Are there any applications for going mixed I didn't mention? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Sample Set:

cartridge question

So when I was on vacation in Philly I bought a copy of platinum and didn’t realize it was fake till I got home. I just want to know if this specific fake can be used like normal on ar. So far I haven’t been able to get it to boot up and it’s just a white screen, which usually means the game is is wrong or not matching. I’m ps I’m sol but worth an ask lol. Also ps the pic of the game id is the one that initially came up. Tried the other popular code you usually see on here as well and no dice. Any help would be appreciated!

Weird screen blackout + random burn - glitch?

I’m currently playing through the post-game of Pokémon Platinum and was battling trainers on Route 228 when something really strange happened.

I was in a battle against an Empoleon with no status conditions. I was using Gliscor and basically just spamming Toxic while trapped in Whirlpool, letting it slowly wear down while Empoleon attacked.

On one of the turns where I used Toxic, both screens suddenly went completely black. I thought my game froze or my cartridge got bumped or something. But after about a second, both screens came back on—and the Empoleon was suddenly burned.

I finished the battle, saved my game, and everything has been normal since.

I’ve been playing Pokémon for years and have never seen anything like this. Has anyone experienced this before or know what might have happened? This just a random glitch? Thanks!

Ability-a-Day #32: Huge Power

Hello and welcome to Ability-a-Day! The series started by u/ianlazrbeem22 & u/zG-FuRy plus continued by myself.

Previous day: Ability-a-Day #31: Heatproof

Today, we have Huge Power, this ability doubles the Attack stat of the pokemon, it is an Attack modifier and not a stat stage change. This is the signature ability of the Marill line (Azurill, Marill and Azumarill)

Azumarill likes Huge Power more than its useless Thick Fat, and thanks to the generation 4 physical and special split, it can now use its physical water STAB making it more better than it was in the previous generation. Mono Water runs will like to use Azumarill in both Platinum and HGSS.

Azumarill Waterfall can be quite strong, but Aqua Tail is a little stronger that it but it has 90% accuracy. Dig, Brick Break, Superpower and Ice Punch are its good coverage moves, Return and Double-Edge are its alright coverage options for hitting some pokemon neutrally (Azurill gets STAB from Return while its evolved forms doesn't). I say that Huge Power is very worth using on Azumarill more than Thick Fat.

It's quite a excellent ability to have, then in Gen 6, Diggersby (as a Hidden Ability) and Mega Mawile got that ability then Mega Starmie in Champions. You can tell me your thoughts by giving a comment about how you think about the ability.

What do you think about Huge Power, have you used it successfully with Azumarill? If anything I'm missing? Just let me know!

Finished first play through

This was a very fun game. Especially loved the Distortion World. These guys all had HM’s that I just forgot for the elite 4, their movesets are not refined. It’s not really a well balanced team, but Pokemon I liked.

Mono-Normal Type Team

This is my first type doing a mono-type run and it was so much fun!

Snorlax - Belly Drum, Earthquake, Crunch, Rest

Ambipom - Return, Ariel Ace, U-Turn, Shadow Claw

Staraptor - Close Combat, Brave Bird, Roost, Fly

Togekiss - Aura Sphere, Air Slash, Roost, Flamethrower

Porygon-z - Shadow Ball, Tri Attack, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt

Lopunny - Jump Kick, Bounce, Dig, Return

I traded Aipom and Muchlax in from soulsilver with Leftovers and a Silk Scarf which was a pretty significant boost in the beginning. This came back to bite me because as soon as they got past level 10 using them it was near impossible to beat the first gym. I initially went for Blissey but i found her difficult to use due to its low defense so I opted for Lopunny. Lastly, there are so many normal type friendship evolutions so that was a considerable part of the run. Despite lacking a lot of coverage with this team and not having the desired abilities for Togekiss/Ambipom, it was still a really fun and smooth run.
