Will I know that I am being awarded the Guaranteed Access grant before enrolling?

I have not enrolled in any college so far but my application status says that I am qualified for the Guaranteed Access grant. It says that you have to be enrolled in order to get awarded, but will I be able to know that I'm getting it before I enroll in any schools or do I have to enroll first?

Submitted FAFSA late

I submitted the FAFSA a few days ago for the current school year (2025-2026). Based on that, I received Pell Grants for the fall and spring semesters. Is it possible for me to get the money from fall despite the fact that semester is already over? Like retroactively? I'm hoping so because it would help me a lot, but I'm not sure how it works! This is my third year in college and it's the first time I've managed to get the FAFSA filled out because it was a struggle with my parent.

usc finaid

I just got my usc finaid package and it’s a 30k increase from what the net calculator told me what it was (~55k).

Obviously I cannot afford the 88k they’re telling me and I’m rlly confused how it could change from the price of their calc. Is there any way I could appeal this? If so what can I say? I know my dad has made less money since 2024 so do I report that or the fact that my moms job is seasonal idek where to start 😭😭 im thinking about calling them and asking abt this today, any tips?

College won't reassess finances despite parent unemployment

Hi, my son is a freshman at a small liberal arts college just south of the Twin Cities. School is a perfect fit and he's playing for one of the school sports (D3). My husband was laid off on January 3. My income is negligible right now (I'm an author and freelance editor) because I'm a caretaker for my elderly parents. While my husband did receive severance, it was taxed at 38% and we used a good chunk of it on spring tuition. Our COBRA premiums started at $1800/month and this month they jumped to $2550/month (like so many others). As of now we have received 0 unemployment benefits from the state due to the severance.

After filing our FAFSA and CSS, I wrote a letter of special circumstance to the fin aid office because their guidelines say they will only re-examine finances after 8 weeks of unemployment. We are 12+ weeks out now, so I explained that we have had zero income since early January and that our 2024 tax numbers don't represent our current financial circumstances.

We received a polite note back saying that they would still be using our 2024 numbers as their 8-week guideline is no longer in effect (?), though they would take the COBRA premium into consideration. We were instructed to update them by mid-August. Mid-August is when fall tuition is due.

I know this is hard to answer without knowing our full financial picture but I'm wondering where we go from here. We simply can't afford the tuition we paid this school year, as even if my husband gets a job tomorrow, our income is still nowhere near our 2024 numbers. Worse case scenario is he is still unable to find work by August.

If the school still refuses to adjust our financial aid package based on those 2024 numbers, knowing that on August 15th will be too late. We won't have had time to take out private loans, tap our 401K or pension, sell our home, or, worse come to worst, withdraw our son from school. My son has a 10K outside scholarship that is per year but the school reduced our fin aid amount by about 60% of that scholarship so it was almost a wash. I'd be grateful for any insight into this from fin-aid professionals or anyone who has been in the same boat. Thank you for reading.

ETA: we do have a 529 opened when our kid was born, but could only fund modestly (though as much as we could each month) as income didn't increase meaningfully until our kids were in their teens. we received no contributions from extended family. currently stands at about $27K.

I’ve been approved for my financial aid and Pell for summer but, I might fail my chemistry class what’s gonna happen with my summer classes?

What did you include in your financial aid appeal letter that actually seemed to make a difference?

I’m trying to put together a financial aid appeal letter after my aid package came in lower than I expected, and I’m struggling to figure out what actually matters to include versus what just makes the letter longer.

My situation feels pretty common but still hard to explain well: on paper, our household finances may look one way, but the reality has changed a lot recently. We’ve had some combination of things like reduced income, my mom's health failing and requiring higher medical costs, increased family responsibilities, and other expenses that don’t really show up clearly in the standard forms. I want to make a strong case without sounding overly emotional or vague.

For anyone who successfully appealed for more aid, what did you include in your letter that seemed to make a real difference?

FAAs - Summer Header Schools and Legacy Borrowers

Hey y'all,

I am a counselor at a summer header school with graduate programs that begin before July 1st, 2026.

As far as we have been told, because we are a header school with summer being the first semester of 2026/27, even if the programs start before July 1st, summer start students will not be grandfathered into the current loan limits and will not have access to GPLUS. I believe we are still waiting on final communication from ED, but that seems to be where my administration thinks the water is headed.

I am wondering if other summer header schools are doing the same thing and anticipating no GPLUS? Or hoping we can find the "loophole" for these programs?

(If you are a current or prospective student, please do not take anything said in this post as fact, we have incredibly limited guidance right now and things are still subject to change)

appeal letter help needed!!

im writing an appeal letter for my financial aid considering my family experienced a death earlier this year that was not reflected on my fafsa or css profile. I have some documents including medical bills and death certificates, but the only issue is that these documents are in spanish due to this death occurring outside of the US.

do I have to translate the documents word by word? or should I just summarize the contents of the documents in the letter itself ?

MTF Appeal denied

I’m 55 and 16 units away from graduating. I met with a counselor, came up with a great plan, submitted documentation (Moms death certificate, lost house) hardships. Classes started this week and I called and spoke with the financial aid director to find out I was denied. I’m absolutely crushed. Asked for any possible emergency grants and another no, and just can’t believe after everything and being this close that it’s over. Do you guys have any suggestions? Thx -

IL MAP Grant disbursement

I go to a CCC campus, has anyone had their MAP grant disbursement reflect their student account for the spring semester? I’m still waiting for mine, and my school has said they haven’t received funding from the state yet. So I was just wondering is it only CCC that hasn’t received the money from the state yet?

I graduated but I think they messed up my financial aid

I've been doing some online digging into financial aid at my alma mater since my sibling has decided to attend but the sticker shock of their aid gave me some concerns. I found some inconsistencies in how aid is given to families and how some people appealed their aid and got money back. Specifically, one person said they reported a sibling in graduate school for their appeal and got a lower bill. I remember calling as an undergraduate asking if my older sibling's graduate school counted and they said no...

I left with 6 figure loans in undergrad (I know, but it's a very prestigious school), and my sibling will be leaving with double if they commit. Something feels off.

Have others had experiences reviewing and appealing former financial aid? Is that even a thing? I have significant loan debt in my family because of this and it looks like it'll only grow with the OBBBA changes this year.

What happens if I don't use FASFA?

So I thought about going to college to get my life back on track and maybe get a decent career

But with me being poor, I thought I'd apply for fasfa first to see if it's even a option because school is way to expensive.

I applied and got accepted.

This is just regular FASFA

But I have no idea what to go to college for. Because with all of my issues, like not being able to drive to work, seizures

I went to career advisor at the local community College I will be attending, if I do go and she sent me to a career test portal

I took it and it said either graphic design data entry jobs at offices

But those things do not need a degree. Graphic design is portfolio based. And office clerk, receptionist, data entry do not require a degree. I looked them up on indeed and linked in.

I thought maybe I look at other things that my local community college has and we'll they are either worthless degrees like learning Spanish or degrees that I can't do like nursing.

It's basically a very generic college.

I don't know what to do tbh. I don't want to get penalized/ in trouble either because that would be bad.

Thank you for answering

Rant about cal grant entitlement awards

Just wanted to rant and ask if anyone has been in the same situation and how it worked out for you.

I’m a California community college student and am planning to transfer this upcoming fall 2026 to a california university. I noticed on my CSAC portal had me under E1 status (for the 2025/26 and 2026/26 years) which is meant for recent current high schoolers going to college. However I’m confused why I wasn’t under E2 entitlement since I have only ever attended California community college and am planning to transfer. I called the CSAC student support line on why I was under this and they told me that I had used up my cal grants which is weird because I though they withhold it when you plan to attend cc and transfer. They said they marked me for freshman, sophomore, and junior and by the time I’m in 2026-2027 year I’ll be senior which is my first year of the university.

I’ve attended ccc full time for 2 years and my 3rd year was more part time taking 1-2 classes per semester.

I’m really mad and don’t know how I ended up in this situation. I remember my high school counselors helping me with the csac portal and account and when I checked up on it, my account over the time had said “4 years reserved” I’m really confused and so stressed. The person said to submit a withdrawal form for the 2025-2026 period so that I can get the 2 years aid. I really hope it goes through. I really need the money I want to afford going to a UC.
