Are really phone sized ereaders worth it? Can people use it daily and finish books in a regular basis?

They look cool and the fact that they are so probable and phone look alike can help me reducing my screen time. I usually read novels and manga. I already have a Boox leaf 2 from 3 years ago that I absolutely love but I have seen these popping up and I wanna see if there are genuine thoughts about it or actual experiences.

Favorite "retro" readers?

I've been bit by the bug of hyper fixation again, and thinking about collecting (or at least learning a lot about) old e-readers, which means recently I've been looking into some.

The obvious standouts to me are the sony models (of course they are, sony always has the most interesting design language in portable electronics). Particularly the pocket models, for being post-touch, but cutting the touchscreen for cost.

But that's about where my knowledge ends! And early kindles and nooks both somewhat elude me, (and *especially* old readers outside those lines are foriegn to me). I'e love to hear trom you guys what your favorite older readers are, so that I can hopefully find something cool to keep an eye out for!

Be careful of the XTeink. Ive had a lot of problems with 2 different devices

I saw lots of posts on social media about the XTeink X4 and finally decided to get one. It came broken out of the box. It would not charge but the charge icon in the top left (as shown in the second photo) was constantly saying it needed charged and quickly ran out of battery. Thankfully I had read reports that customer service was basically non existent and ordered off Amazon. I did a return and got a second one. This time it charged but the left side of the screen was messed up. Lines running through it vertically and parts that looked faded as shown in my first photo. I tried to post this to the XTeink subreddit and they banned me. Id stear clear of this. It was a cool idea just executed poorly.

How about a new eink device with main phone as backend

With popularity of xteink (in its own niche), i was wondering would it be possible for a device which can simply attach itself to a mobile and copy the screen. So it does not require a battery or a full fledged soc so it can have extremely thin profile.

It will attach through usb c consuming mobile's power and some scrcpy like program to simply clone the screen. So essentially your regular oled / lcd will become an ereader.

This should potentially even be more cheaper than xteink with lot more horsepower and storage (based on your phone) or you can simply convert your old phone to an ereader

Can jailbroken Kindles use Libby?

Hello! I have a Kindle Touch 1st Gen and count this new Amazon policy as a step too far, so I'm looking at alternatives. I've switched from Kindle Unlimited to Libby, and I plan to buy a Kobo eventually, but I would like to use my Kindle rather than my phone in the meantime since I can keep it separate from distractions.

Is it possible to put Libby on my Kindle if I jailbreak it? Does it actually work, or is it a kind-of sort-of measure? I have a valid library card and live in the US, so that's not a concern, I just want to know if it works before I put a couple of hours into the project since otherwise I'd rather just put the Kindle to rest.

If you access books from a restricted library, don’t get a Pocketbook.

This is Libby related so skip if you don’t use Libby (or you can read if you want).

I purchased another Pocketbook ereader that already has Libby integrated into it. I added my regular library, no problem. When I go to add the restricted library, it doesn’t show up at all. I tried everything to make it appear.

Thankfully, I also have a Kobo Clara BW. I sign out of the regular library on that and into the restricted one with no issues at all! I have true justification to have 2 ereaders now 😂

This is just a warning for anyone who has access to a restricted library. Don’t get a Pocketbook!

What is best for my first ereader

My needs are

	•	I need to read manga.

•	I need to sideload all the books into the device myself.

•	The device should have expandable storage.

•	The display should be crisp.

•	Colour is optional because I heard that they are not as crisp as black and white.

Suggestions for "buy it for life" type of e-reader

I'm looking to go all out on an e-reader. I already have a kindle basic, but that's what it is - basic.

First off, I'm Canadian, keep that in mind for library cards and such ie. Kindles Libby only working in the US

I do not wish to purchase a membership to any monthly books (Kobo Plus, Amazon Unlimited, etc), every book I have on it will be from me or the store that is provided.

I want an e-reader that will stand the test of time. I want a "buy it for life" premium experience, go all out. The best of the best, something that will last me a lifetime.

I have not tried colour e-ink but am willing to try it. Also have not tried Android based e-readers but I am willing to try those too.

is a kindle or kobo better for transferring books as files?

I've owned a kindle paperwhite since 2016 but the screen is super scratched so I'm going to upgrade. The problem is that all of the books on the kindle are on my parents' amazon account and as I'm a full grown adult by now, I want to manage my books by myself.

I started the process of downloading and converting and unzipping all the files, but one of the steps required to make the files readable on a kindle has me stumped, I'm clearly doing something wrong and I've spent 3 hours trying and failing to make this happen. Would it be easier to just transfer the kindle books to a kobo instead of another amazon account? Like, there are less steps/the steps are easier to understand for a beginner?

From what I've seen, I also really like the customization options of a kobo, but in the end, the whole file transferring is my biggest deciding factor. Thanks.

E-reader for Manhwa and Novels?

Hi,

I’m completely new to e-readers and I’m looking for some guidance. I’ve always been a big Manhwa and Manga reader, but lately, I’ve started getting into novels as well.

Currently, I use my iPhone 16 Pro Max, but it’s not ideal anymore. Even though the screen is large for a phone, it feels small for certain panels, and the weight is a killer

I’m looking for a device that fits these 2 needs:

I need to run apps like Mihon (or similar) to download and read manhwas.

A mix of vertical-scroll Manhwa, Manga, and standard E-books.

Also should I go for an Android-based E-ink device (like Boox or Bigme) or would a Mini Tablet be a better choice?

really like the idea of E-ink for eye comfort, but I’m concerned about how well these devices handle the vertical scrolling of Manhwa and the color quality.

Any recommendations for someone making the jump? Thanks!

My 13 year old wants an e-reader, help.

Hi all! My kiddos end of year gift for school may be an e-reader. I want her to be able to download bought books as well as library books on it as well. Something that can be customized. As well as easy to use. She has ADHD and struggles focusing sometimes as well. I know nothing about e-readers. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it! Tia. 😊

Budget Friendly with SD Storage with other caveats.

I'm looking to get a e-reader specifically because I've heard of Amazon and their nefarious ways. I primarily read through the Kindle app, I do have a Oasis 10 that was very generously given to me, however it is very slow and I very much would like to get any reader that has an SD card slot so I can expand the storage on. I plan on putting my entire library on multiple SD cards. Some of the things that I have listed down below I'm not sure if it's capable on e-readers, outside of the Oasis I mentioned above I've never had an ereader so please excuse me for being ignorant on the subject.

#1 budget friendly Under $300 if possible.

Color a reader would be nice but not needed.

I would love to be able to download Hoopla, Libby, Bookshelf Kindle for KU and Audible apps.

Connect Bluetooth Earbuds for Audiobooks.

Ability to use my Page Turner.

I read and plan on downloading fanfiction so I would like for it to be able to open different types of files.

I built a free web-to-epub converter for your e-reader(fully free, no signup, no paywall, no limit)

Reading is a big part of my daily life — blogs, technical docs, longform articles. I like to collect things throughout the day and read them later on my Kindle during my own time.

I used to rely on Omnivore for this, but they closed their server and expelled me out. After that I tried EpubPress (felt outdated/limited), dotepub, and a few others, but they all had deal-breakers like conversion limits, abandoned development, or dependency on someone else's server.

So, I built my own tool any2ebook.

It extracts browser tabs or bookmarks from the extension and then, send them to desktop app. So he conversion happens on local machine. No servers involved, no data collection. Never worry about the privacy or server matters.

It can convert many web pages into one epub, no LIMIT.

A note on PDFs:

Since I also deal with a lot of academic papers, I added a "PDF to EPUB" feature that handles math-heavy layouts using AI. so it's a paid feature.

But feel free to ignore it! The web conversion is completely independent and won't cost a cent forever.

I truly hope this helps fellow readers who share my passion. We all deserve a better reading experience. Happy to answer any questions or hear your feedback.

Hope it helps!

Just picked my fist ever ereader - the Musnap ocean C bundle at 40% off

I actually really wanted the BOOX but could never find a good deal on it. When I saw this bundle at 40% off I decided to pull the trigger and see if it’s any good.

So far the performance has surprised me, it’s very snappy. Some hiccups like Libby page flips with the buttons not working. Some user error as well as learning I had to install a web browser before I could send to kindle with Libby.

Storage on it isn’t great at 64gb and no SD card slot but I plan on hosting all my books/manga on my home server and accessing it using this device.

Let me know if anyone wants me to test something!
