is a kindle or kobo better for transferring books as files?

I've owned a kindle paperwhite since 2016 but the screen is super scratched so I'm going to upgrade. The problem is that all of the books on the kindle are on my parents' amazon account and as I'm a full grown adult by now, I want to manage my books by myself.

I started the process of downloading and converting and unzipping all the files, but one of the steps required to make the files readable on a kindle has me stumped, I'm clearly doing something wrong and I've spent 3 hours trying and failing to make this happen. Would it be easier to just transfer the kindle books to a kobo instead of another amazon account? Like, there are less steps/the steps are easier to understand for a beginner?

From what I've seen, I also really like the customization options of a kobo, but in the end, the whole file transferring is my biggest deciding factor. Thanks.
