On campus housing cancelation fee

Hi y'all, my roommates and I registered for on campus housing for the 2026-2027 school year in mid-february since that's when the housing contract signing deadline was, then found an apartment less than a month later. We got an apartment because we needed a place to live in Athens over the summer. We all canceled our housing contracts less than a month after signing, and we're told by friends that as long as we canceled before July 1st we'd be okay.

We are now each being charged ~$3600 for canceling, despite doing so in March when the university has plenty of time to fill our housing spaces before August. We now have 10 days to appeal.

I get it, we should have read the contract closer and not trusted others so easily. But none of us can afford $3600. Is there any loopholes to this or people we can talk with to potentially get this amount lowered? Thanks.

what ap credits should i use and which shouldn’t i

hi, i dont rlly have a connection w the alumni network at uga so i thought id pop in here and ask. i have a 5 in apush and physics 1, and a 4 in lit, and im planning on taking physics c (both), calc bc, lang, and econ (both). as an econ major, i was pondering which credits i should use to get out of intro courses and which to just not use

for example, i plan on using my apush credits since i hate history but im thinking of just not using my micro, macro, or calc credits bc i dont wanna skimp out on an intro class and miss things ill need to know later on. are the equivalent courses in those subjects worth taking, and how relevant are they to my major?

Reading Day activities

Are there any activities/free treats/ or anything fun happening on reading day? I struggle to keep up with a lot of the campus stuff, but would love some shoutouts.

What is the workload/WLB actually like for a finance major at UGA?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a sophomore student at GSU Perimeter and planning to transfer to UGA and major in finance, and I wanted to get a realistic idea of what the workload is like.

tbh, I didn't take APs in high school or the ACT/SAT in high school, so I’m trying to understand how big the adjustment could be.

There's a few questions I have in mind:

  • On average, how many hours do finance majors (or other business majors) spend studying or studying assignments?
  • How intense are the lectures? I heard people having to sit through 3+ lectures in one day.. How do you keep up with it?
  • For someone coming from a more regular (non-AP/academically intensive) background, is it really manageable for someone like me?
  • How do you manage your time and still have a life outside of school (like still being able to go to the gym, hanging out with friends, etc)

I'm willing to push myself and try my best to adapt to a whole new environment. I just want to know what i'm realistically getting into and how to prepare.

How early do people move in?

Title. I'm an incoming freshman and, just my luck, my birthday is the first day of classes. I want to go out on my birthday but I need friends to do it with and I don't know how I'm going to make them so fast. So I'm wondering how early people generally move into the dorms? Is it just the Friday before classes start? Much thanks.

What's a spot in Athens that became so much a part of your UGA experience that you can't separate the two?

Not just a place you went to sometimes but somewhere that feels like it IS your college experience. A bar, a restaurant, a park, a coffee shop, a street corner. The kind of place where every time you go back to Athens after graduating you have to visit or the trip doesn't count. What's the spot and what makes it so tied to your time at UGA?

Grad Students Utilizing the Writing Center

Have any STEM grad students utilized the writing center? I am writing a paper, and it would be useful to expand my writing skills (scientists are notoriously good communicators) and I figure they would be the best help, but I'm not certain if they can help with such in depth research stuff.

Honors course w/o program?

Incoming freshman, biochem, pre-med. Didn’t think I’d go here (still not 100% but just planning ahead) so I didn’t apply for the honors program. Planning to apply my freshman yr. Since I’d be taking chemistry this fall, is there a way to get into an honors chem class without initially being in the program or is it unlikely? What are the chances I’ll get a good chem teacher and an A in the class w/o honors and with? (Previously got a 4 in ap chem and understood it very well although I know it differs greatly, I enjoy chem a lot). One of the reasons I’d go to uga is to maintain a high gpa for med school (hopefully 3.9-4.0), and if the chem department (and not being in honors my first semester) is going to prevent that, I’d rather take the ivy route. Please be honest and I’d love to hear from your experiences!!

Are girls at the downtown bars nice or mean in your experience?

I’m thinking about going out to the bars tonight. I’m respectful and normal but I wanted to check yalls experience if the girls out there are mean or nice? I just don’t know if it will be worth it if I’m just gonna get bullied. I’m not the best looking guy or super confident. But I’m just trying to have a good time and chat with people, like I’m not just going to try to flirt or hook up I just want to also meet people and have some laughs. I’m just scared I will get side eyes or dirty looks or they will laugh at me to their friends for even trying to talk to them. Any advice helps thanks!

uga vs umd

decision day is coming soon and i cant make a choice </3 got into uga oos (with honors) and i have family in georgia! its also a bit cheaper than going to maryland (my state school lol) with my merit scholarship. im planning on studying finance/mis which both schools have great programs in. my main concern is definitely the diversity at uga, but i keep hearing that its still a good experience for minorities which i rly hope is true :') i know any school is what you make of it but ive heard it can be cliquey and i definitely dont wanna join greek life so im just a bit skeptical. if anyone can speak on their experiences id really appreciate it! i liked my tour but i will say it definitely it was a culture shock coming from a community with a lot less white people lol, but i ultimately like the schools academic offerings better than maryland (ex. music business program), and itd be pretty nice to go out of state if i can just step out of my comfort zone.

would it be bad idea to transfer to tech?

Going into my second year this fall as mechanical engineering. I have a pathway to tech for spring 2027 which is basically guaranteed acceptance to transfer. Not only would i be transferring mid way through a year but also half way through my undergrad degree.

I’m in an engineering club where I’m getting experience with the full process of designing and manufacturing parts. The leads are also giving me more responsibility and opportunities next year where I will be learning/doing more about the what goes on in the background of the team. I also have some interviews for research for fall too.

I don’t care too much about the city vs suburban, party scene, etc. arguments

Just want some thoughts about this. I feel like if I transfer mid way through, I will basically have to restart from zero because I have things going on for me here at uga.
