Where to begin filing taxes for city/county taxes [State]?

Basically what the title says, me and my wife have already filed both Federal and State taxes but we have also lived in two different counties in 2025 (we're in OH if it helps) and I'm not sure where to even begin in filing for two different counties.

Does anyone have any idea how it works and where I should go online to file locally? I am in Columbus, OH currently and lived in Shreve, OH for the first half of 2025 if it helps narrow it down.

Note: I used State as the flair because the rules didn't list city/county as an option.

W-2g makes no sense

Am I missing something so I gamble on DraftKings and on my W-2g is saying I won over $68,000 but when I go to my stat sheet it’s saying my net total earning is -$3,235. I put the $68,000 into my tax program and I’d owe $10,000 in federal. I did do over $1000 bets but only won around $100 in profits then I’d lose it all.

[IRS] IRA contribution was attributed to wrong year by Vanguard

After finishing our taxes this year (but before filing), my husband and I went to contribute to our IRAs. My husband discovered that Vanguard wouldn’t let him contribute for 2025, because they said he already had. It turns out the contribution he made last April, for the 2024 tax year, had been attributed to 2025. He rarely looks at his IRA, so hadn’t logged in since making that contribution last year, therefore didn’t catch the error sooner. We have to assume it was his mistake in selecting what tax year the contribution was for, but we really don’t know for sure. Regardless, he reached out to Vanguard to see if that contribution could be recharacterized, and the response was essentially “nope, too late.”

Because it was the same contribution amount, we’re fine for this year’s taxes if we just attribute last year’s contribution toward this year. But then we’ll need to amend last year’s taxes to indicate that he didn’t make a contribution. So my question is, are there any other options? Should we try pressing Vanguard on this, or are we just out of luck? Anything else to consider?

Thank you for any suggestions or insight anyone can provide.

How do I add rideshare as a business expense on FreeTaxUSA?

I added a 1099-NEC for 2025 in FreeTaxUSA and got to the section asking about my vehicle and mileage for the business expense deduction. But I didn’t see anywhere to enter Uber/Lyft purchases or other rideshare-related expenses as a business expense.

Tax Filing for year 2025 - IRA Contribution Question

Myself and Spouse make $260K per year. I have ~96K in traditional IRA and ~20K in Roth IRA. I have contributed $1000 post tax money to traditional IRA in the year 2025 and converted it to Roth IRA during Feb, 2026. Will there be any penalty or any additional tax on my current total traditional IRA contributions. My assumptions is that it is just a back door and $1000 is a post-tax money so there won't be any additional charges. Also I haven't received any tax form as I have converted this to Roth IRA only in 2026. What form needs to be amended during tax filing. I am planning to file online and not planning for a tax consultant. Appreciate your inputs / suggestions.

FreetaxUSA - Medicare tax assessment on Form 8959 is being populated with incorrect figure?

FTUSA is calculating an additional tax assessment due based on a “Medicare Wages” amount, which is more than 10x the actual W2 Box 5 figure. In my employment situation, W2 Box 1 equals W2 Box 5 wages; there are no employer health care or 401k type contributions.

I believe the W2 information was input correctly, at least it matches everywhere else on the 1040.

Not sure what actually produced the figures entered by FTUSA in the Form 8959 or how to change them?

Any suggestions where I may have made a mistake or how to achieve this correction?

Please, what am I doing wrong? What can I fix?

I (31M) have paid taxes since 18, and have never gotten a tax return.

I make under 20K each year, and even have an extra $50 withheld from each paycheck in hopes of not owing the IRS after taxes. Every year I owe.

This year it’s actually gone up to owing $400 and I’m truly at a loss for words.

I was raised in a secluded community and never learned much about how taxes work, and it’s extremely confusing to me…but something has to be wrong here right? I have no children, own no property or assets, and have nothing in savings.

Please, How can I make this stop I genuinely can’t afford it.

[STATE] accidental overpayment to PA

hi all!

just filed my PA state return and realized i made a mistake. i received $408 in unemployment compensation for 2025, and accidentally put that as taxable income on my return. (because PA taxes everything else, so i assumed this would be the same situation 🤦🏻‍♀️)

it hasn’t been accepted yet so i can’t amend it at this time, but is it even worth going through the process to submit an amended return for the $13 i paid? should i just wait until the state catches it and let them take care of it? what will they do in this scenario?

any advice is appreciated! thanks in advance!

QJV reporting help

Hello all.

My spouse and I have a qualified joint venture (QJV) and I want to make sure I report correctly! I am using Freetaxusa.

Please correct me it I am wrong, but this is how I currently understand it: I add up all of our income and split it across two schedule C in the "gross receipts and sales" section asking for all non-1099 related income. Even though I am paid exclusively as a 1099, I do not enter individual 1099s on my return, as this will essentially double the shown income and the IRS already has all of the income reported to us... it just needs to match when the two schedule C are tallied. I will also split all business expenses, deductions, losses etc evenly across the two schedule C so we essentially have mirrored forms.

Does this sound about right? Anything to add or correct me on? Thank you for reading!

Question about how to estimate payments for extension.

I need to do my estimated tax payment for an extension but I have self employment wages plus regular w-2 wages and don’t know how to calculate that. I’ve never had to file my business taxes before or file for an extension so I’m absolutely lost. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Question about gig work?

I recently became a preparer this year but I also do lots of gig applications on the side that still make up most of my income. Over the years, I’ve collected lots of data on the various gig jobs that I do. My question taxwise is what would be the most beneficial scenario from below?:

If I do Amazon flex, I’ll make the most earnings and have the least amount of expenses but I’ll have the most taxable income.

If I do DoorDash or Uber Eats I’ll make an average amount of income with an average amount of expenses but I’ll have the most tips to right off on my taxable income

If I do Lyft or Uber I’ll make about the same as Amazon flex but and have the most expenses out of all the other apps but I’ll be able to write off the most miles out of any gig service as my mileage would far exceed the standard deduction.

1099 & social security

My husband, mid 50s, is a truck driver. He gets paid a bonus every 3 months based on his safety record. He also gets paid a bonus at the end of the year based on the number of miles he drove during the year. The bonuses roughly amount to $5, 000 each year. He is not an owner operator. He is an employee of the trucking company and receives a weekly paycheck from them.

His employer originally reported these bonuses on a 1099 NEC. I told them they couldn't report income paid to an employee on a 1099 Non Employee Compensation Form. We did not receive anything stating that this 1099 NEC was canceled or deleted or otherwise corrected to zero.

  1. Is that a problem?

Employer then sent us a 1099 MISC but put the dollar amount in box number 1 for rent. He did not rent anything to them. So I told them again and they got a little snarky but sent another 1099 MISC with a check mark in the corrected box at the top and put the amounts box 3 other income.

Last year, 2024, our accountant filed the 1099 along with Form 8919. This year the accountant said they didn't want to cause trouble for my husband with his employer so they just listed it as additional income on line 8 of the 1040.

  1. Will this 1099 MISC income if reported with Form 8919 be included in his social security wage base when he retires and they calculate his monthly benefit amount?

  2. It is my understanding that if it's reported as additional income on line 8 of the 1040, it will NOT be included in his wage base for social security. Is that correct?

  3. Additionally if it is reported as additional income on line 8, could we run into issues with the IRS and having to communicate back and forth to explain and prove where this other income came from?

  4. If it's reported as additional income on line 8 of the 1040, would we end up owing additional taxes or penalties on that money? By this I mean in addition to the amount that was calculated on the 1040 and paid with the 1040.

I'm also concerned with our social security system potentially failing us by the time we retire.

  1. Could this extra $5,000 a year make a difference in the amount he will receive as a benefit when he retires?

  2. Is it enough of a difference to make it worth arguing to have it reported correctly?

I understand we're going to end up owing taxes on this $5,000. That's not the issue. The issue is that we ran into a situation in the past where worker's compensation only used the wage base of social security (W2 amounts) and that ended up with him losing close to $200 a month and benefits. This was a different employer.

The consequences of incorrect reporting have far reaching effects. I apologize for the long post, but the details are important.

[IRS] looking for advice paying 1099 taxes

Explanation:

I am a Licensed Social Worker in Ohio. I was hired to a company as a 1099 employee and my first pay (weekly) was 1/9/26.

I read some information when I started that I need to keep my own taxes so I’ve been tracking each pay and keeping back 30% of each pay, which I heard is a good starting point to withhold.

I also heard it’s a good idea to pay taxes quarterly? I think I saw the first payment lines up with when taxes are due, April 15th?

Just wanting to see if these figures are right, do I need to withhold more, is paying quarterly more personal preference and it doesn’t matter? Pretty much any help on this would be so appreciated.

Other info I didn’t know if I needed to include or not:

I make $32/hr and I’m scheduled for 36 hours a week but with cancellations (which I don’t get paid for) I’m typically averaging ~20 hours. Typical pay ends up being in the 610-650 range but if I get a better or worse week it fluctuates.

Any additional info needed, let me know.

[IRS] MY MOTHER IS CLAIMING ME AS A DEPENDENT, BUT I DON'T THINK I QUALIFY AS ONE

Hello, I need help in assessing whether I am a dependent or independent. My mother is insisting I am still a dependent and says by filing my taxes as an independent (which I have already done) is screwing them over and making them owe a lot more money. She has always been in control of my finances and important information, not wanting me to learn about them so she can have control, so I am woefully ignorant about a lot of things and I can't tell if her claims have any legitimacy.

After quickly reviewing the IRS requirements for dependency;

  • I do not live with my parents for any time out of the year, besides visits, and I have changed my mailing address to my apartment (which upset them greatly as well)
  • I do not believe they are financially supporting me for half of my expenses, but I can't prove that without getting information from them

I pay for my rent ($600.00 / month), utilities ($200.00ish / month), car insurance ($100.00 / month), etc. and this isn't including what I spend monthly on food, clothes, gas, hygiene products, and everything else. They pay for my phone plan, streaming subscriptions that I am logged into, health insurance, and they pay the interest on my private and federal student loans (,but I am still responsible for paying them off completely). I do not know if they pay for anything else and how much so I am having a difficult time combatting them on this point.

I don't know if me being a full-time student at school or being a dependent on the FAFSA trumps any of this information, but I have been told that it shouldn't matter and I still don't qualify. My parents have met with multiple accountants and professionals who help with taxes and are being told that I am still considered a dependent. I do not know if these people are correct or if my parents are not telling them the truth.

I want to enforce my boundaries for the first time against them and not refile, but I am terrified they will force me into it and/or excommunicate me. This is not the first time she has been financially (or emotionally) abusive and it has caused major problems in our relationship, but now we are starting to reach my breaking point. Next month I am graduating college and over the summer I am moving across the country with my fiancé, I need to be financially independent and now this isn't just hurting me, but my partner as well. I don't want this to end in cutting her (and because of that, the rest of my family) out of my life because I love them, but I don't know what to do at this point because I can't take it anymore. Any advice you have would be greatly beneficial!

Tax question

My mother died on March 17th 2026.

1 - do I need to file her taxes?

2 - I took in my 4 siblings. aged 15, 13, 11, 11. I have legal guardianship. I am aware I can claim them as dependants next year but am I able to do that on this year's taxes? I have not filed yet.

Update - i am aware of survivor benefits. Im already in the process of handling that.

First time doing taxes, got only refunds, is that normal?

Turned 26 late last year so this was my first time filing taxes. I work a part time job and earned a bit over 23K last year, have no kids, not married, live with my dad and have no real expenses outside of repaying student loans. Old man said I should file my taxes for 2025 so I went through FreeTaxUSA, submitted my W-2, answered the questions, and it said I'd be getting about $600 in refunds with no mention of anything I'd have to pay.

Is that it? It said I was done but it felt both too easy and while I know I'm not making $300K as a full time business owner across multiple states or nothin, I was still expecting to have to pay something. I get anxious pretty easily so idk if I'm just over thinking things or not but is there anything else I have to do?

IRS refund issues

I mailed my federal tax return without tracking to Kansas City. Post office weighed and assured it will be delivered on Feb 11. I still have no update from IRS on refund tracker and transcripts are not available. I got state refund last month from my paper filing. Anyone else in the same boat??

Post Grad Confused with Filing

Putting this as simply as I can and would greatly appreciate any advice. I had healthcare marketplace from Jan-May and got a tax credit. Trying to lower the amount I owe back. My total premium for those 5 months was $1639.55, I got a $300 tax credit per month so I only paid $139.55 in total. Yikes.

Using freetaxusa.

I moved from OH to IL mid last year so dealing with multi state filing.

Income Breakdown:

A- Job 1: (Serving) Wages Tips & Comp: $7134.73

Social Security Tips: $5750.42

B- Job 2: $61,962.87

C- HYSA Interest Earned: $191.84

D- Instacart I did for like a month $702.24

Deductions:

E- Social Security Tips (?) - $5750.42

F- Mileage from Instacart (x.70) - $178.29

G- Overtime Wages (/3) - $269.82

H- Interest Paid on Student Loans - $774.12

Total MAGI: $63,019

This means I am only $419 away from being below 400% of the national poverty level, which caps my repayment on my tax credit. I was advised to open a Traditional IRA and contribute this amount for 2025. I will probably do a bit more than that just so I have a bit of wiggle room, but i really want to optimize my return and dont want to have to owe all of my tax credit back. Any corrections or advice would be greatly appreciated.
