924 distributor? Engine swap?

924 distributor? Engine swap?

Hey all! Sorry for this ADHD mess of a post but; I got this 1977 924 from a friend who told me if I could get it running, I could have it.

Well, I got it running long enough to get on a trailer and back to my place and now I am starting the arduous process of acquiring parts...

First and foremost; the bearings in the distributor are 100% shot. I got it running by jiggling, wiggling, and fiddling the distributor, new battery and fuel, and some other minor TLC, and it will run pretty well(lil smoky) for about 10 minutes and then backfire and die out as the distributor slowly wiggles out of timing. I am pretty sure it has some vacuum leaks too but one thing at a time...

The problem is... I looked at Napa, AutoZone, O'Reilly's, hell I even went to the Porsche, Audi, and VW dealerships in town and NOBODY has one ANYWHERE within a 50-mile radius of me. I am in Vegas for work currently and I can't even find one here, although I haven't exhausted every option.

To follow up that question, are there any motor options with more abundant parts that are easily swapped in? I have heard that Audi 5cyl motors will bolt right up, and 944 transaxles are not hard to find around me, so it has been a thought. I also have a 2JZ sitting around that I think would be awesome, but I kinda want to keep my German car, well, German.

What is the best course of action to take here?

As the heading says, it is time to part ways with my beloved 924. I’ve had it for a few years now, and it is time for it to go to a home where it will be driven more than I am able to. (I drive my 944 more, and have a 718s) and just don’t realistically have the room anymore now that I have to add an SUV into the mix.

I know we are all here for the same reason. The love for these cars. There are so many special intricacies that made us fall in love with them when we were kids. So, in an ideal world, I’d like it to go to someone who loves them in the way we do. Where it will be taken care of, driven, and cherished to be passed on. It’s crazy that it’s going to be 50 years old next year.

Little history on the car. I bought it from a man in Minnesota, who bought it from an elderly gentleman who owned it since new. The Minnesota man was the typical, “Cheap Porsche, Go Fast, Look Cool, Make Money” ideology type (we all know them). In short, he felt it was “lackluster” (lol). So I bought it and had it trailered to Chicago so I could begin working on it (original owner is dead, and this Minnesota guy doesn’t know anything about cars really, let alone 70/80’s RT). It was in better shape than I thought it would be (given I bought sight unseen). Over the next few months I worked on quite a few things myself, but also used BBP in Chicago (they have a huge knack for early pcars). We did a lot to the car and it is in great running condition.
List of maintenance/work completed :

Timing belt, water pump, brake cylinders replaced with flush, new sparks, rebuilt original & OEM Bosch alternator, fuel pump relay rewired, new fuel filter, pump, hoses and clamps, cooling system drained refilled and holding good vacuum, axles removed cleaned and hubs removed cleaned and degreased with new axle seals and reinstalled. New water pump pulley installed, new shift cable, and gaskets. New tires. Overall, probably one of the cleanest 924 in the Midwest that hasn’t undergone a major restoration project. Original paint with color code Brocade Red 32A. Was only offered as a color in the early 924 palette, and then was later available as PTS in the 930.

Accurate and working TMU at 44,000~ miles, interior is immaculate with the exception of the ever known dash cracks. Original leather sunroof case as well.

There are always projects with these cars (as you all know). But this is a great example that could really become a show stopper if someone wanted it to be (that was never my intention, therefore didn’t go that route). Very transparent and open to offers. I have it listed at $8000 which is negotiable. I just would absolutely love for it to go to someone who will care for it. DM me if you have any questions or are interested.

What is suposed to be connected here?

I tried to start my 924 to se if it will start (has electrical problems) and it fludded out fuel out of the hose mounting place, on the component next to the fuel distributor . I assume there should be something connected there? but I don't know what. the previous owner had tried to plugg it shut but the rubber has crumbled.

Inner tie rod compatibility: Golf Mk1

Hello, I just ordered a Golf Mk1 inner tie rod kit for my 924 (1979, 2.0l NA)

And I can confirm the inner tie rod does fit and is much more affordable (cheapest I found was 191e for the pair).

For those worried about changing TTS

For those worried about the faff of changing the thermo-time switch on a 924, here you go, it's not too bad at all.

Remove the downpipe (or the whole exhaust to be fair. Remove the 4 screws holding the exhaust heat shield above the front pipe.

Access is dead easy then, simply unscrew the old one and screw the new one in. No clearance issues. I just cable tied the loom to the sensor to keep wires away from the bell housing.

1.8t swap

Yo wassup guys, so all and all, I'm thinking of pulling out my engine to properly clean it and fix it (new headgasket, and I got a leaking freeze plug) before doing an EFI conversion.

But then I'm thinking, might as well just get a decent 1.8t.

I know it's been done before, I'd just like to know:

- difficult to get a compatible clutch assembly? I have the 924 2.0l NA with the five speed gearbox

- I'll need custom engine mounts as well innit

- the cross member will be in the way, so I need a custom oil pan?

I'm probably missing something

This car is in Montenegro which I can get it but I am not sure if the price is fair and honestly not sure if there is a chance to fix it here anyway.

I would like to hear your opinion.

So i'm thinking about buying a porsche 924 in a worse condition with the intention of restoring it. But I wanna evade any expensive, extremly hard to repair or fatal problems. Can you guys give me some suggestions what should I look out for? Also what is an acceptable price?

New project car and some questions!

Hi all!
Brand new to this group and the 924 lifestyle, recently picked up a 1977 924 running and driving condition. The main issues are cosmetic and the one mechanical issue is that the fuel tank is rusted, and it is running on a temporary fuel cell.

I have heard that replacing the rear hatch struts can be difficult and to be extra cautious as people have smashed their rear hatch glass before. Is this a real concern? videos on YouTube seem to do it so simply.
Let me know if any of you have experience in doing so.
Thanks guys!

Hello again everyone. I ended up pulling the head of my car so I could helicoil a spark plug hole. But upon inspection I'm in need of a new camshaft and followers. Basically all of my followers are pitted to shit and all my cam lobes are in rough shape and one of them is flat now too. Any recommendations for a good place to pickup a new camshaft and followers would be great. Don't matter if it's OEM or an upgrade. I'm based in Canada.
