What are your thoughts on the newer flexible RF coils?

MR vendors have come up with higher density flexible coils replacing the traditional rigid body coils. Only the head coil is still in rigid form. GE calls them AIR Technology™ Coils, Siemens version is called BioMatrix Contour Coils and Philips calls them SmartFit coils.

From what I gathered, these coils are very flexible, able to wrap tightly around any region of interest with minimal distance between the target area and the antenna. They also feature higher density of sensor elements closely packed together. As a result they claim to feature improved** **Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) because they sit closer to the anatomy,

What are the real-world advantages of these newer RF coils in practice?

“Metal in eyes 30 yrs ago, has had MRIs since then”

Word per word filled out on the questionnaire on an inpatient by the charge RN. Because I have trust issues, I asked for an xray of the orbits (I don’t recall if there was already a CT of the head/ last I checked there wasn’t). The charge nurse gave me a hard time. “But he’s had MRIS since then!” I wanted MRI clearance by the Rads. The RN got annoyed w me even though I tried explaining to her I was just trying to save everyone involved even if it is redundant. I know it’s exposing him to radioactive by having an xray but I didn’t want to risk it. I called the house supervisor to complain bc I shouldn’t get pushback from nurses for MRI clearance. The house supervisor then said that everyone is just stressed and we are understaffed and the hung up on me.

This happened last Sunday and I forgot all about it and today the lead tech brought it up to my attention saying I didn’t need to make this patient get an xray. She told me the screening form clearly said the metal foreign bodies in the eyes happened over 30 years ago and the patient has had MRI since then. I tried explaining to her that I did not trust that the metal was removed.

She then told me he was scanned in our facility in 2023 and that I wasn’t able to find his documentation on PACS bc I had to use the old PACE system in the holding room to find it.

Idk the whole thing is annoying. I’m mostly annoyed with the lead tech pointing out everything I’m doing wrong and dismissing me saying I’m not comfortable scanning a patient like that. I’ve received incorrect screening forms before. I’m also feeling micromanaged by her that she’s pulling up old cases I’ve done. I’m the only evening tech and I scan way more than the day shift techs. Brain wwo or brain lab protocol

For a patient who’s had a hx of glioblastoma/malignant neoplasm and has follow up MRIS of the brain every 6 months, do we need to add the Ax T2 Flair thin cuts? Apart from the post Ax T1 3D post contrast (that gets MPR Sag + Cor) and Post Cor T1

IVC

Hello everyone, its me again with the backup account, so I was wondering, for IVC filters implanted 20 years ago and no documentation, what do your facilities do? I tried getting Clearance through a radiologist and see if they're ok with me scanning but did not really get a straight answer and I really dont feel ok scanning without either rad backing me up or any documentation. Am I in the wrong? I decided to read up on it as well and dont want to cause a delay in ot care, and did see that most modern IVCs are conditional, but like I said, this was implanted 20 years ago. Advice much appreciated friends

Edit. Forgot to mention im in a hospital aswell, pt and pt family cannot get documentation on where it was at and originally confused it for an aneurysm clip on the aorta

MRI Jobs

What did yall seasoned techs do to get experience as a new grad in MRI. Im from AZ I finished school in December. I haven’t been able to find a job since then. I’m lacking “experience”. I tried the outpatients and hospitals and they still didn’t want to hire even though the interviews went well. I tried everywhere in the valley to get some experience and none. I don’t if I should go back to school for something else, this isn’t working unfortunately. I tried to look at rural places and they also want 1 year at least of experience.

How much better is an MRI arthrogram compared to a regular MRI?

From what I understand, an MRI arthrogram helps with highlighting ligaments, tendons and fibrocartilage because the contrast outlines small tears. But I've also heard that MRI technology has come far enough that the difference isn't very big.

Could an MRI arthrogram actually reveal things that a normal MRI missed?

Could it also more accurately estimate the severity of a tear?

Stuck in a contrived world

So I just had what must seem like my 14th MRI all this past week. And I told the technician who I've never seen before and this is a new facility that I haven't been to. I've been to about six facilities so I told him f*** you're going to ask me what music I want to listen to and I'm going to give it to you straight. Put on whatever works cuz in all of my MRI experiences I have never heard any music.

He applied just shows a response that is surprised. That is the situation and then I'm in and all of a sudden 30 seconds in. There's no music and it dawned on me much like life. There's no one there to hear you when the environment is misbehaving.

So I'm just going to come out with it. Feel like this is some sort of prank and I told him after my MRI look I didn't hear anything. He said I can't believe that I said look. You probably just have like a secret society and laugh this whole thing up. But irregardless again, this isn't about the MRI. This is that yeah I didn't end. I'm still in this world with an environment that I am unable to keep tabs on anymore and felt maybe read it was a link to the outside world.

Just play me some. Dennis Brown 🎶

MRI quiz vs MRI in practice

I’ve been bouncing between reading mri in practice for my bulk note taking and mri quiz to study for my boards. For those that have used both, which did you find to be a better resource? I’ve found mri in practice to be much more elaborate and I’m unsure that mri quiz is adequately preparing me for boards.

My confidence is gone now

I work in hospital for a couple of years. Around 4 years and when I gave research MRI a try I lost all of my confidence. It was nice but I don't do cannulation and stuff. I still do fetus imaging and some brain of newborn imaging but that's it.

I tried working in the other team which has a contrast imaging and I just suck like I don't know what they're doing and the cannula is shit I don't know how to do it anymore. Either that I don't know how to do it or I'm just shielding myself on admitting I'm not really good at all.

Been 7 years now in this field and it feels like I never really grew. I always feel like I'm the lowest of the low like they are always someone better to me.

I feel like shit, I'm not good anymore. I always told myself that I should always take the risk as I don't want to retire without experiencing it but here I am being the loser I am.

I know as an adult I shouldn't really care about whether I'm good at the field or not as it's only a job at the end of the day. It feels like I never really matured. I always blame the massive mental meltdown that I had but it feels like I always pretended that I am good in this field when I wasn't really.

Plus, I feel ashamed whenever I miss a cannula. Patient must be thinking why did I got stuck with the shittiest tech. My workmate must be thinking why did I have this loser for this shift.

I'm sorry guys, I don't meant to be toxic!

MRI project help

Hi i am an electrical engineering working on an MRI related project for a class. Its a business cum technical class so we have to study the business and ins and outs of things. As a project requirement we need to interview experts or experience people in the field. If anyone here can please help us and be an interviewee for us I would really appreciate it. Also if some people who are not experts are willing to share their experience with us that would also help.

Tech question: Has anyone extravasated a vein?

Today I had a 92 year old patient who was a “hard stick” I’m usually good at IVs, I’ve been doing them for about 2 years and I help other inexperienced techs start IVs.

I got the patient’s vein checked for blood back and got flow, when I pushed contrast her vein swelled up and I stopped immediately and cold compressed. I still checked for contrast on the post images and there was none. She didn’t want us to try again, so I felt bad for the patient and kind of caught me by surprise and hurt my confidence. Has this happened to anyone?
