Two days with Fios TV+ and I hate it vs. TiVo

Verizon sent us some new gear. We've had our TiVo Series 4 for a LONG time (replaced two fans) and we love it. There's nothing like it.

I tried the Fios TV+ and it's such garbage. My notes will be based on how it compares to a TiVo.

  • Can't watch live TV while navigating
  • DVR shows are buried a few menu items deep (home, DVR, then your shows)
  • FTV+ keeps assuming I want to watch Matlock just because it was on CBS when I hooked the thing up. It's not a favorite show, guys. Stop that.
  • Switching channels takes 3-5 seconds (instantaneous on TiVo)
  • When you update your remote, it holds your entire TV hostage. Apple TV doesn't do that.
  • Lost remote pairing twice in two days.
  • No enter button when changing channels, so you have to put in your three numbers, and then WAIT. TiVo has an Enter button.
  • There's no DVR button, you have to go to home, which kills your Live TV feed, and then navigate the system. Bad UI.
  • There's no way to get tech info on a channel. For example, TiVo says that a channel is "720p", FTV+ says "HD". Useless.

I hate this thing. Sending it back.

Why do I have to pay for a "streaming package" on Apple TV when I have Fios TV+ which...streams?

This is asinine. I have the new 4100 streaming device, but if I want to use the Fios App on my Apple TV, I have to upgrade to a "streaming package"?? What kind of BS is that? Isn't the 4100 already streaming?

Verizon Fios TV+ upgrade disaster - no working TV after 3 weeks

I had Fios TV One for years with no issues. My STB died, and Verizon sent me a refurb box that was disgustingly filthy. Since they no longer make the old boxes, they told me I had to upgrade to Fios TV+.

Three weeks later, I still don’t have TV.

They sent me a new router and one of the small Android TV Fios boxes with only power, HDMI, and USB. This is the only box, no dvr etc. The problem is my TV location is not usable over Wi-Fi. I’ve explained that from the start, but I keep getting bounced around and nobody seems to understand it.

This week I they finally sent me a MoCA adapter. I was told it would connect to the box by USB and let me use the existing coax run from the router location. But the adapter they sent has no USB at all, only coax, Ethernet, power, and LAN ports.

So now I’m down to 3 options:

  1. Verizon sent me the wrong MoCA adapter
  2. Cancel Fios and switch to Comcast (hestitant because of the weak upload speeds)
  3. Cancel Fios TV and purchase streaming apps for Tv.

Has anyone dealt with this exact setup and gotten Fios TV+ working without Wi-Fi?

Installing Ethernet Switches for Older Home

I just moved into an older house built in the 80s. The previous owner had Fios install the ONT in a corner of the basement. I would like to set up a network closet 2 floors up (top floor) so that I can add a switch and run ethernet from the attic to POE security cameras. It would be very difficult to run an ethernet cable from the existing ONT to the location of the potential network closet. As a novice to home networks, I'd like to seek advice on the best way to handle this diy project. TIA

Moving out end of May, when do I cancel? (internet-only plan)

Hello, just wondering about the timing. I need wifi in May, but don't want to be charged for June. When should I cancel? Also, is it on the website or do I have to call?

Verizon boxes in my apartment hallway

Anyone know the install procedures for Brooklyn? Last month a bunch of Verizon branded boxes were installed in every level of my prewar apartment building.

Thing is, no conduits seem to be entering or exiting the boxes unless they are drilled in from the outside. I was wondering if maybe my building owner has just rented out 5g wireless relays or something.

I'm really hoping it's going to be fios because my god am I sick of optimum and it's constantly dropping connection and packet loss for a hundred bucks a month. If you think it's fios, anyone know a timeline estimate? Doesn't really seem like any work other than the box placement is done

No internet after turning power off

I was replacing some light switches so I had to turn the power off to a few rooms. My router is in one of those rooms, so the router didn't have power for about 45 minutes. When I turned the power back on, the router light was solid yellow.

This has happened before after losing/shutting off power. Normally what fixes it is unplugging the ONT and router for a minute then plugging them back in. That didn't work this time.

I called Verizon. Nothing they had me do worked so they are sending out a tech in 2 days. Is there anything else I can try? Id much rather not go 2 days without as I work from home.

The rep had me plug my old Xbox directly into the ONT but I didn't have a TV in my basement. He said it shouldnt matter as he would be able to see if the ONT was providing internet to it. Im not sure that was a great test as I wasnt able to see if the Xbox was fully booted up.

Edit: found a small TV to hook up the Xbox to. Plugged ethernet from Xbox directly to ONT. No internet. Do these go back simply from turning the power off?

Install experience so far.

Today was supposed to be the day.

Over the last few days, multiple sets of flags planted, and I took the morning off to meet the technician.

Guy pulls up and looks around. "They didn't run the conduit?" Nope. Calls the home office and more guys need to come with more flags and conduit probably coming next week.

Not upset. He even offered to give me a temporary drop, but that wasn't really needed. Nice guy.

Only shaking my head because isn't everything done using scheduling software? When the last flag guy won't come for another day or two, wouldn't the rest in line know?

Does the $10 loyalty discount expire after a certain amount of time?

The rep offered to renew my current 1 gig plan to get a 5 year price lock and a $10 loyalty discount, but they were unable to tell me if the discount has an expiration date. Does anyone know? Just to clarify that's separate from the autopay/paperless billing discount.

Total packet loss every 20 minutes

I've been a long time Fios internet user. Every 20 minutes I get a short blip of total packet loss.

Pingplotter - vertical lines indicate brief total packet loss

This has been going on for over a year and happens at exactly 20 minute intervals all day, every day.

Fios has come out and replaced the router and ont and has no solution. This is a wired ethernet connection directly to the router so my home network is definitely not part of the problem. I've observed this from two different desktops and a laptop so it's unlikely to be a PC hardware/software issue. It manifests as short hiccups in video and audio stream which is frustrating because I primarily work from home and often attend meetings online.

At this point I have no confidence in Verizon's ability to troubleshoot this. If anyone has any brilliant ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

ONT info and router

My client has verizon obviously and I'm trying to determine what his connections are before I change anything. I"ll be honest, I'm use to optimum's setup for both fiber and coax going to a modem. and verizon where the only ingress is a coax. Having an ONT connect via coax and ethernet to once device is kinda mind boggling :)

He has a ONT I-211M-L and a G3100

From my understanding the G3100 is connected to the ONT via ethernet(wan) and coax.

The ONT's Coax is split to a cable box and the G3100.

So from my understanding

G3100 Wan port is internet obviously)

G3100 Coax is so the cable box can get live tv?

So is the ONT acting as a modem/gateway while the G3100 is the actual router?

What I want to do is

split the line going to the cable box to a moca25 adapter so i can add a mesh system and use that as a backhaul.

Alternatively I was just going to put the mesh nodes in with the main node connected to the G3100.

CR1000B

Does someone have the file chr2fb_fw_3.6.0.3_BD_loader dot bin or something newer for the CR1000B? It would be awesome to get something newer than 3.3.0.10. Yes, I know that CWMP normally handles this, but It's not pushing it. No, I can't and WILL NOT call Verizon to have it pushed. I am on FWA, and yes, I do know this is related to FiOS.

Same day FIOS activation?

New apartment, has an ONT and I have my own router.

I ordered through the app and the activation date is in 4 days.

Can the be done faster? I shouldn't need a tech to come out so why the delay?

Looking for extender recommendation

I have Fios and use G3100, so many dead zones throughout my house, mainly in the upstairs bedrooms so was told to use and extender or setup mesh system or even get a new router. Came across these options while reading through some of the posts on Reddit: Can you please share what you found working best for you if you had the same dead zone issue as me? Thank you

  1. eero 7 Mesh WiFi System
  2. Ubiquiti Dream Router 7

If you also lost your CableCARD Channels today or recently...

There's a way.

If you have a VMS4100 (the QAM one, while it lasts), you can make it happen. There's some potentially advanced technical work involved, but an LLM can probably figure it or assist you along the way.

I'm a little hesitant to share too much publicly that Verizon might be unhappy with, so please DM me if interested in collaborating on this.

What Are They Doing In My Building?

Verizon is all over our neighborhood in Queens installing fiber. There are no subscribers in our building. Everyone uses Spectrum. Verizin is installing heavy dudy infrastructure in the building, drilling and installing metaal cable conduits and distribution boxes. Seems like overkill for a 16 unit building. I asked the Super, who just said they are doing an upgrade in the neighborhood. Why are they doing this if everyone uses Spectrum? Is this because landlines will be on the system?

Low ping but high latency. Will VPN bypass this Fios congestion?

Just curious for gaming (Xbox) if a VPN can bypass daytime/peak hours congestion? I live in a major city very close to downtown, so a very high traffic area. My speeds and ping always stay the same. About 900 up/down and 20ish ping in game. However during the day I can feel a considerable amount of latency that isn’t reflected in my ping. This goes away after 11pm or so and it feels like a night and day difference.

I am hardwired in and have tried connecting directly to the ONT with the same result. Verizon says it’s an Xbox issue and won’t help, but I feel as though it might be overload on their infrastructure here or just poor routing of my gaming packets.

I’ve read that a VPN can help bypass this congestion, but I don’t know much about it. I am fine with my ping going up (again it says 20 but it feels like over 100 during these times) if the packets can be routed better to avoid the congestion. Wondering if this is a possibility or if anyone could add some color here. Thanks!

White Light on Extender but no signal

Hey guys i tried to search if anyone else had the same problem, before bothering yall...didnt see anything so i apologize if this has been covered 100 times.

I ran a coax from the router upstairs to the extender they gave me, downstairs. Extender is solid white, seems to be talking but its not putting out a signal and cant be contacted via the mynetworksettings site even though its listed in the drop down like it was in the other house (we moved). Also recently reset it thinking that might help make it start from scratch but nothing is changing. Pulls up 192.168.1.100 when clicked on and cannot be reached.

Any help would be appreciated!

Recent Jitter and Latency after 8pm (Boston area)

Recently over the last couple weeks I’m noticing the internet becoming unstable for like 30 minutes between 8pm and 9pm. All the cable boxes freeze and say unstable internet. SpeedTests from phones and tablets show internet unstable. Then after like 35 minutes it resolves on its own.
