Starshard Brigands announced

2027 release date

  • Classless system with nonlinear skilltrees
  • Roguelike loot system (randomized affixes, think "Diablo")
  • Heavy faction system
  • Rival parties in the dungeon
  • QTE style additions to the combat
  • Appears to have an Octopath Traveler style resistances system

IIRC this is the one the dev is using RPG Maker MZ to do it in, which I didn't even think was possible.

Looking for dark themed blobbers/dungeon crawlers

Heyo everyone, I've been scouring this sub on a daily basis looking for a game that scartch that itch, so I thought to finally post myself 😃

I'm looking for recommendations for blobbers or dungeon crawlers preferably similar to SMT: strange journey. I enjoy dark atmosphere the most and preferably party-based.

The most popular recommendations I see are Etrian Odyssey , unfortunately, the anime style is kind of making me hesitant to pick it up, additionally, I have seen a few gameplay videos and managing parties of 15 characters is not my thing.

Looking forward to any recommendations, be it mainstream or niche as long as it is on PC ( not strictly steam )

Any dungeon crawlers you'd recommend for someone who generally doesn't like puzzles or "blobber" style combat?

I'd say I generally do not like CRPGs described as "dungeon crawlers". I tend not to like environmental puzzles that these tend to have and I tend to find "blobber" style combat quite boring. All I remember about Eye of the Beholder was that I hated the teleport puzzles and quit it shortly after encountering them.

I don't really like first person exploration either. Also, I generally prefer games that are more narrative driven (though that isn't an absolute necessity if the gameplay is really good).

All that being said, I haven't actually played that many dungeon crawlers so I'm wondering if perhaps I'm missing some games I might enjoy. For example, I'm curious about The Bard's Tale IV because I have enjoyed inXile's other CRPGs.

It very well might be the subgenre just isn't my cup of tea but I thought I'd ask. Since I haven't played most of them so I'm open to any suggestions. I strongly prefer turn-based combat, but would be open to trying real-time if the game is good.

TLDR: Any dungeon crawlers where the puzzles aren't too annoying and the combat is actually fun and tactical?

DRPGs for switch 1/2?

I love playing these games portable. I have a steam deck but prefer the lightness and feel of my switch 1 & 2. I have wizardry 1 remake, EO trilogy and persona and smt games (if they count). I used to play Eliminage original on the psp and loved it but it looks like that never made it passed Playstation. The Dark Spire was a favorite from the Ds as well as smt strange journey.

What I would really love is a might and magic 3 to 8 style game, or wizardry 8, but I know those won't ever be ported, sadly. I really do not like games like grimrock where there is no respawning enemies and positioning is king. I like old school D&D type combat in a dungeon.

Is class of heroes 3 any good? I played coh1 on psp and loved it (well except for the Japanese only voice overs, but I got used to it). I liked that it had unlocking classes and a unique mechanic with the game structure.

Any other games on switch 1/2 Tha are any good or is that about it?

Dungeons that go on way too long

I've been enjoying playing Mary Skelter 2 (despite all the weirdness) but this game just goes on WAY too long. 46 hours played and I'm at chapter 6.

This is after 5 large dungeons each with 4 to 5 levels each. I like the layout, the puzzles but the game really could be done by this point and I wouldn't complain. The combat is okay but the boss fights really come down to luck and RNG.

For DRPGs where death of characters is expected, what are the expectations for replacement characters?

Kinda general question, mostly I'm thinking about Wizardry inspired stuff.

Like I've been playing Class of Heroes 2 a bunch lately, (Need to do 1 as well at some point and a few others), and I never really know what I'm supposed to do in games like this in terms of replacement characters.

Making a second or thrid team is so extremely grindy, when leveling the main team is already really grindy in games like these. Just replacing a character when one dies leads to them being massively under leveled compared to the rest of the party, even if a game gives some extra for leveling new recruits there is often a cap that doesn't align with the rest of the party.

And thats even before accounting for how frequent instant death abilities are, and how rare items with death resist/immunity is. Or if not instant death than just occationally a map has a specific enemy varriant thats so much stronger than everything else, and escaping/running from it can take a few tries. Espescally when you encounter them early game before you have a collection of instant escape items/abilities. And even then figuring out what enemies are the dangerous ones are just big combinations of trial and error.

Is there something I'm missing? Cause it almost never feels good no matter the soultion I approch this issue with in Wizardry clones.

This actually applies to most Atlus rpgs. As we know, the original SMT games were undoubtedly DRPGs. But as they gained popularity (for some reason) they lost the moniker. Having played them, I would say yes. I just started Metaphor Refantazio and it's obvious to me that the gameplay loop is essentially the same. The difference between these AAA DRPGs and the more niche ones which are classified alongside the Wizardry series is that the former is accompanied by more gameplay elements that work alongside the standard DRPG structure.

It just seems odd that a game like Metaphor Refantazio received such praise from people who want nothing to do with DRPGs.
