Before/After: Our 1913 Prairie

Before is Black. After is not.

We’ve been getting it fixed up and are moving in soon!

Would love any ideas on how to lean into the historic period and architectural style. Lighting? Garden (native to zone 8a)? Fun extras?

Which exterior?

The modern is slightly more money, more brick.

The more traditional has a lot more siding and more maintenance.

I’m leading more modern, but I feel like it may be a bold choice that would age questionably

Building a house - help!

This is the house we are building soon in the Midwest. Any better ideas or recommendations for the outside? We aren’t sold on white. We can do whatever we want without changing the layout. Any recommendations!?

SOS: the inside is contemporary, the outside is the house equivalent of Lloyd from ‘Dumb and Dumber’

Any way to “make the curtains match the drapes” or whatever the analogy is? I don’t know if you can tell, but the base of the house is kind of a tabby with shells in it.

I didn’t know if we could possibly take it European Mansard style?

Help with shutters and color

Door and shutter change

I'm having the siding replaced and need to pick new door and trim colors. Here's the mocked up version I'm thinking of switching to. I'm looking to lighten up and get away from the dark navy.

Painted shutters or all wood look?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

And yes I need landscaping. I just had everything dug up in the fall for foundation work in the basement. I'm focused right now on getting everything back in order starting with the siding and trim.

Navy is current look

I need to replace the siding on my house. I am looking for thoughts on the three attached. The final photo is the original house. I also need to pick window trim color. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: if I keep the cream color it matches the garage and it will save me an extra $2,400 to redo that to match which would be ideal. I just wasn't sure how it would look

Exterior ideas? House restoration project

My family has a rental property in California that has been neglected by the current occupants for years and they’re finally getting out of there soon. We have plans for the interior of the house (floors, bathrooms, kitchen etc.), but need ideas on the front of the house. It’s kind of a weird set up, not sure if it would be worth salvaging any part of it.

The house faces a busy street so privacy is definitely important and we would prefer not to do extreme changes to the layout. Budget is not enormous for the front, but don’t want to cheap out on the face of the house. Any input or ideas you all have will be a huge help. thank you for looking.

Edit: thank you everyone for the tips ! Will come in handy very soon when we take back control of the unit! Just to add some info about the property that may help any future responses

The house has a finished adu in the back yard

There is a long gate/fence behind the visible cars that opens up to a decent sized back yard (that will be another project).

Cannot add large trees for privacy due to power lines

Help with bilevel curb appeal

I love my house but the outside just seems so blank. The owners before tore out all trees and shrubs. We have no HOA so can essentially do whatever— bonus points to DIY friendly ideas (we are pretty handy). Thanks all :)

New Siding and Trim?!

I’m house needs an update. I’m thinking beige shingle siding against all white trim. I want to make the shutters smaller and also white. I would like a bigger door but it is not feasible economically. Thoughts?

I also want to fill in the landscaping more with boxwoods and false cypress.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with these cable/internet boxes right at the front of my house (right beside the sidewalk/driveway). Not the nicest thing to look at, and unfortunately, the cable company said they can’t be moved.

So I mocked up a few options and would love some honest opinions:

  • Option 1: Just grass (keep it super simple)
  • Option 2: Small, clean garden with a couple of low-maintenance plants
  • Option 3: Minimal rock bed (low maintenance with a more modern look)

I’m leaning one way, but curious what others think from a curb appeal perspective?

Which option would you go with?
Or is there a better idea I’m not thinking of?

Open to any suggestions, especially if you’ve dealt with these boxes before.

Thanks!

Need suggestions

Working on trying to make my house look better on the outside. Last year I worked on the front of the house and this year I’m tackling the side. We had a tree blow down and take out our fence (honestly that was a blessing). Yesterday I busted out an old beat up walkway on the side and am trying to figure out what to do next.

My thought is to dig up where the downspout goes into the ground and figure out where that goes. I will most likely try to divert that away from the house (possibly run it under where those beat up pavers are? Or maybe just around the little porch on the side and let it exit there or at the back of house). I’m thinking mulch with edging blocks on the left side of the sidewalk and fill in where the walkway was. I plan on putting up 2 4x4 posts with lattice between them in front of the where the downspout is so that I can level and put some pavers behind it to hide the garbage cans from the street.

Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Just moved into 4-plex. Asked LL about yard and he said he just leaves it... I'd like to create a little area to sit n barbecue or firepit. I moved everything off area by front door and covered with flat boxes. Thought I could throw an outside rug on top. It seems like a mound so not sure if this will work.. help?¿? Rent friendly options please....

Looking for a refresh

Just bought this brick ranch from the 70s. I’m completely redoing the inside, and I’m looking for ideas to brighten and refresh the exterior as well. I’m zone 7a if anyone adds landscaping ideas. Thanks in advance!

Budget is reasonable. I don’t want to completely start over, but I have a little to spend. The labor will be free, just supplies will be needed

Hello all!

I have been renting a house that I love but hate the backyard which is basically just a dirt lot. I am wanting advice for what to do with the backyard, especially since I am a renter and don’t want to put a whole bunch of money into it. I tried to grow grass (as you might be able to tell) but it grew patchy and ugly. I’m in Arizona and we are about to enter into our extreme temperatures. Any suggestions for a low-cost idea to make my rented backyard easier on the eyes are welcome :)

Concrete or Pavers

Hello, I have an aging walkway with pavers but there seems to be a concrete surface underneath. The contractor was saying that he will break the concrete and install pavers. I am concerned how it will affect the foundation of the house (if any) where the concrete is against the wall of the house near the front door area. So not sure if I should pull the dilapidated pavers and go concrete or break concrete surface underneath and go with pavers? Also I am planning to take the natural area out of mosquito reasons and go with concrete or pavers. Thanks in advance!!

As the title says, we have bought this triplex as our first house and I have no idea what I can do to my exterior to make it a bit less looking like some sort of jail. Flower bed? Bushes? Any recommendations are more than welcome.!!! Budget +/- 2000 for now
