Should I move to Columbus?

I (29F) am an Arizona native. I lived in Seattle for two years then moved abroad. I'm returning to the states after 2 years abroad and considering where to live. I have two job offers. One is in Columbus. It is aligned with my passions, hybrid, etc. and a salary of $60,000 pre-tax, but I'm worried because 1. I have never lived in Georgia before and the cost of living. And 2. I'm bringing my foreign spouse and I just don't know the political landscape. My other option is to return to Seattle and get a job that is loosely related to my passions and pays a livable salary (if renting, could probably never buy though). What do y'all think?

Editing to add: my spouse (27M) is east Asian but is racially ambiguous. He often gets mistaken for southeast Asian, middle eastern and Mexican. Although he can engage in daily conversation, he will not be working for at least 6 months after arrival as he is not a native English speaker so i think it's in his best interest to first take some English classes and get accustomed to American life.

LET’S GO COLUMBUS! Big things are coming.

Data Centers are good for us! 🇺🇸

I understand why some people have concerns, and those feelings are valid. Change can make people nervous, especially when a project this large comes to your city.

But when I think about Columbus, I think about families. People trying to provide. Young adults looking for opportunity. Veterans transitioning into civilian careers. Parents hoping their kids won’t have to leave the city just to find something stable and meaningful.

That’s where I see the potential.

Yes, people mention power usage, land, and environmental concerns, and those conversations absolutely matter. But I also see opportunity.

Hundreds of jobs means hundreds of people being able to pay rent or mortgages, buy groceries, support local restaurants, help small businesses, and create stability for their families.

Construction workers. Security teams. Electricians. HVAC technicians. IT professionals. Maintenance crews. Vendors. Support staff. That ripple effect touches far more people than just the folks working inside the building.

Fort Benning has been a blessing and economic backbone for Columbus for years. This feels like another opportunity to strengthen our city in a different way by bringing in technology, infrastructure, and long-term investment.

Maybe it won’t be glamorous. Maybe it won’t be something people take selfies in front of. But not every blessing comes wrapped in bright lights.

Some opportunities look like stability. Some look like job security. Some look like giving people a reason to stay in Columbus and build a future here.

That feels worth being hopeful about.

So all the cats at my apt complex have been TNRd and they know I mean food so they generally are cool with me and I know them. But last night this sweet bag of bones showed up behind my apt building. She immediately wanted pets even without a bribe. I was able to feed her some wet food last night and then again this morning. She came out of the woods pretty quickly this morning when I came back and I was glad she had stuck around. I'm taking her to the humane society to get scanned for a microchip, but if she doesn't have one, the best they can do is give her a vet checkup due to her being so skinny. After that I basically have to put her back where I found her. This is not an outdoor cat though this is clearly an indoor kitty. Jumps everytime a car gets too close but purrs like a motor and even lets me hold her. I can't keep her even though I'd love to, and all of the shelters are swarming with kittens rn since it's kitten season.

If anyone is south of atlanta GA and wants to help or knows how to help, please comment or DM me. This baby does not want to be outside.

Greystone Properties: Which is Better?

I'll be moving back to Columbus this summer for a teaching position. Right now, I'm torn between two places that I viewed today: Greystone at the Woodlands and Greystone Farms. I'm in the market for a one bedroom and both properties have the exact pricing I'm looking for (<1,300), as well as tons of amenties. I pay close to 1400 here in ATL for way less space, not even a quarter of the amentities, and let's just say safety has become a major concern regarding two recent incidents... Nonetheless, both would have way more space, amenities, and benefits than what I'm getting for almost 1400 here 😭

Greystone Farms is my first choice and I like the fact that it's gated. My major dilemma is that Woodlands will have an opening around the time I'm ready to move for a one bedroom and Farms it's still up in the air. I could see myself I'm either honestly but because both are so popular, I don't want to be sol and end up at either cause I waited too late. Just wanting more insight from anyone who's rented at either places before or is currently there and more info about the areas surrounding each place. Thanks!

Glasses/optometrists, who do y’all use/like

I need to get my eyes checked and get a new pair of glasses. Any particular places in town that you’ve had good results with?

Thoughts on the mayoral candidates running this term? Specifically looking at Jaketra Bryant, Steve Kelly (but yikes @ his recent responses to his DV arrest), and Chris Breault but also interested to know if Mark LaJoye is any "good"?

Can people please stop riding bikes and escooters on the road AT NIGHT. No one can see you until we get right up on you and we have to serve to go around.

Also all of you that like to ride or walk the bike trail, you need to STOP and push the light before you come jetting out into the road. The cars don't have time to stop . And you do not have right of way.

I'm so tired of this happening, the city needs to invest in actual bike lines or side walks. It's just a matter of time before some one riding at night gets run over.

While other cities are banding together to push back against mass surveillance, Columbus seems to be sitting idle on this subject because of the data center. We can walk and chew gum y’all. Election cycles are great opportunities to bring up these issues.
There are countless cases of cops stalking exes, love interests and strangers and recently in Dunwoody GA it was used to surveillance young girls in a gymnasium. There is no regulation behind these cameras and they sell our data without our permission.
Let’s get our contract cancelled and get these things off our streets.

FCC Approves TV Station License Transfers from Block and Sagamore Hill to Gray

“In addition, Gray will now own two full power stations, a duopoly, in the Columbus, Ga.-Opelika, Ala. DMA with WTVM(TV), Columbus, Ga., and WLTZ(TV), Columbus, Ga.”

This may not have much effect on the news, WLTZ has been under a shared services agreement with WTVM for years now.

Following the strong turnout on our previous community poll about issues and leadership priorities, this next poll is focused on where voters currently stand in the upcoming city elections on exactly who they plan or have voted for.

The goal is not to endorse any campaign or candidate. We just felt it was important to get a clearer snapshot of where the community is at right now with who they plan to vote for.

The poll is set up by district, so you’ll only see the races that apply to where you live, along with the citywide elections.

Not sure what district you are in?
You can get a quick snapshot by going to the Columbus Government's Interactive Map page or you can go to the GA Secretary of State MyVoterPage and enter in the requested info (First Initial, Last Name, County of Residence, and DOB). On MyVoterPage, you can view everything like your active voter status, polling location, your districts and elected officials, as well as take a look at the sample ballot for reference.
Not sure where the candidates stand or what the ballot questions mean? You can head to branch.vote, create an account, and see that information for yourself.

A few notes about the poll:

  • Responses are limited to 1 per email address to reduce duplicate submissions
  • Google sign-in is required for that reason only
  • Email addresses are not collected or saved
  • Undecided options are included for every race
  • Results will be shared publicly after the poll closes

Poll Link: https://forms.gle/rqN6Hsn4WhxVQBD17

Note: We have turned on response editing for this poll in case you change your mind closer to election day.
