Accent in Little Lorraine

Have any of you seen the movie Little Lorraine? If so, what do you think of the accent? It sounds good to me but I'm from the mainland. Past movies set in Cape Breton or Newfoundland sounded nothing like your accents so this is definitely better. Looking forward to hearing what you think.

6 hours with a rental car in Sydney in late June - what's the best way to enjoy the area

My wife and I (mid 50s, healthy, enjoy the outdoors) will be on a cruise ship that stops at Sydney on June 24, 2026. I booked a rental car for $100 for the day. Ship docks at 9:30 and leaves at 5:30. I am estimating having the car for about 6 hours (10:30 to 4:30). Where should we go to make the best of it? (We will eat a big breakfast on the ship and bring some granola bars, so that we can maximize our time on the ground and not waste it on eating lunch.)

I figure our options are either Bell Museum or Louisbourg. Not enough time for both, and I don't believe we have enough time to go to Cabot Trail. I am an engineer, so Bell Museum has a special pull, but I think there is much more to see and do at Louisbourg.

(1) Is there any other options besides these 2? Ideally, if there are good hiking trails nearby, we would be happy to just take a cab to the location, hike for 3 hours, then take another cab back -- as long as the 2 cab fares are less than the rental car cost.

(2) Alternatively, I would love a shuttle service that would take passengers from Sydney to Louisbourg, then pick up 4 hours later. If it's $50~60 round trip per person, I would happily pay for that instead of paying for a rental car. All the commercial tour companies charge more than $100 per person for a tour of Louisbourg because there is the cost of a tour guide for the day, but in reality, all we need is transportation, not a guide. Any local Sydney resident here wanting to make some money? I can probably find more cruise passengers to fill your car/minivan/bus. :-)

(3) If we go to Louisbourg, it will be June 24, not peak season yet. I understand there will be fewer programs and re-enactors. Is it still worth the visit?

Any other advice you may have for us while we are in Sydney would be much appreciated.

When I was growing up on the island, I remember almost every home, espescally the 'fancier' ones that were better maintained, had these giant stars on the side of their homes facing the road. Often by the front door.

Google tells me they are called Barnstars and are most frequently seen in the US state of Pensylvania and some parts of Ontario, but I can't find much documentation about its use here in Nova Scotia.

Why did so many houses have them? I remember asking as a kid and none of the adults knew. But most of the adults I asked back then didn't have the stars on their homes either.

Just want to get the word out that this person and her “healing house” are fraudulent. She is a very abusive person. If you want more details feel free to message.

Potential home invasion attempt - Big Glace Bay Area

Just after dark yesterday, my parents were startled to find a man banging on their side door asking to be let in. This is not an easy-to-spot door and is surrounded by trees (not the main or back entrance). They said he became increasingly aggressive as time passed. They called the police, but eventually wanted to make it known they were home, so they went to the door without opening it. He begged to be let in to “pray over them” because God gave him their address.

Scary stuff, but a friendly reminder to lock those doors. I feel quite strongly he was making sure no one was home and eventually would have tried to get in. Luckily for them the dogs must have sensed danger because their two usually loveable big boys were chomping at the bit to get at him so he wouldn’t have gotten far regardless.

Lodging in Cape Breton

Hi there - my husband and I are experienced riders and do a 2-week motorcycle trip every summer for the past 22 years. We are finally exploring eastern Canada and doing Gaspe Peninsula and Cape Breton (leaving from our home in Philadelphia). We prefer to not plan too far ahead on our motorcycle trips, which means not securing motels or other lodging until we are on the road, maybe a day ahead of when we arrive. On our trips in the US (other than Alaska), this hasn’t been a problem.

I’m a little worried about arriving on Gaspe and Cape Breton without having lodging secured ahead of time. I’ve read, especially for Cape Breton, that there are not many places to stay, at least along the scenic loop.

We are going the last two weeks of June. We like motels, lodges, or air B&Bs - we’re flexible and value scenic interesting locations. If anyone with experience in those two places can share their thoughts I would be grateful. I love the spontaneity of planning our route day by day, but I don’t want to be stuck without lodging.

Miss Home

I grew up in Cape Breton and moved away more than 23 years ago. Even after all this time, I still miss the small-town feeling, the people, the culture, and the quiet sense of peace you find there. A lot of people speak negatively about home, but to me, it remains one of the most beautiful places in the world. And that means something, because I’ve travelled all over the world.

Spending a weekend at Cabot this June. I’m wondering if there are any known “adult” services that might align with bachelor party activities close to the Cabot resort. Sorry if this isn’t allowed in this sub. Cheers.

I’ve been slowly building this Home Assistant dashboard into a full-time “what’s going on around the house and province” screen.

This all started after Hurricane Fiona. We were without power for around 9–12 days, and some people around here were out even longer. After that, I wanted something that would help me keep track of the stuff that actually matters during a storm or outage.

It is not meant to be a clean little phone dashboard. This is more of a wall/TV display that I can glance at from across the room and instantly see if anything needs attention. Kind of like the kitchen from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but for outages, weather, cameras, internet, and backup power.

Right now it shows:

  • NS Power outages, affected customers, markers, and a live outage map
  • Local fire / emergency ticker
  • Environment Canada alerts and current conditions
  • Weather radar / rain map
  • Ecowitt weather station data: temp, humidity, pressure, rain, wind, gusts, etc.
  • Nova Scotia highway traffic cameras
  • Starlink Mini stats: download/upload, ping, power draw, connectivity, restart button, monthly usage, heating, last restart
  • Tapo H500 / camera status, including motion and battery camera status
  • EcoFlow battery banks with stored kWh, total load, battery %, and output draw
  • Calendar, sunrise/sunset, and lunar phase

A big part of this setup is power-outage planning. My Starlink Mini is running on DC power through my EcoFlow setup, and the security cameras are also being kept on DC power instead of relying on regular AC outlets. With the batteries and the help of a Bluetti Charger 1 alternator charger in my vehicle, I’m getting roughly 24–30 hours of runtime during outages, depending on load and how much I’m topping things up and the ability to continue charging and running them.

Most of the dashboard is built around a traffic-light idea. Green is good, yellow means keep an eye on it, red means something probably needs attention. I wanted the colours and borders to do most of the talking so I don’t have to read every single number.

It is definitely busy, but that was the point. I wanted something that feels more like a local operations board than a normal smart home dashboard. During storms or outages, the things I care about most are power, weather, roads, internet, cameras, and battery backup, so I tried to put all of that in one place.

Still tweaking the opacity, card sizing, and readability from across the room, but this has turned into one of my favourite Home Assistant projects so far.

Cabot Trail, day trip

I will be driving the Cabot Trail in 1 day. Leaving from Sydney, sticking to the right before heading off of the island.

What are the best trails, coves or stops that are a must. Best place(s) to eat lunch.

Is it worth circling back toward Baddeck before leaving the Island?

We know it is not enough time, but are sneaking this bucket list item into another one just in case we cannot get to it another time.

We are about quantity, not necessarily quality.

(Except for the food, always about the best food and beer)

Blog about Sasquatch’s in Cape Breton

Alright… I realize the title is out there.
One time when I was doom scrolling through Reddit I came across a link to a website of a supposed blog of an old man living on a farm in Cape Breton who has a commune of Sasquatch’s messing with his farm, story ended with him admitting he had a brain tumour.
I’m trying to find it again, but I really just came across it on a random thread somewhere.
If anybody has any idea or a link please let me know!
Thank you!
