We have an approximately three-year-old Belgian Malinois mix who was brought in as a stray today, May 2. She weighs 65.5 lbs. and is heartworm negative. She arrived with an injured right rear leg, possibly hit by a car. Despite her injury, she remains a friendly girl in desperate need of immediate placement.

Ava is a big, beautiful 89 lb. sweetheart with the happiest personality! She’s housebroken, walks great on leash, and loves affection. Whether it’s a stroll or lounging nearby, Ava is the perfect companion.

In playgroup, she did great with both calm and energetic dogs. She prefers to do her own thing, but she’s respectful and tolerant, giving appropriate corrections when needed. The shelter can be overwhelming, but her sweet nature always shines through.

No, my pals and I do not refrain from posting small dogs because we discriminate against them. The fact is, they don't need us. I have yet to see a euth-listed dog under 20 lbs get executed, even the very old or the very sick. A human always steps up for them. Not that I wish them any harm—my soul dog was a Chiweenie—but there's so many dogs and so little time.

It's the big kids who get discriminated against, so we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into their defense.

I doubt there are any GSDs in Houston but Trina now. BARC killed them all last week.

she's five months old and just 20 pounds. She's got an adorable face and silky little ear floofs that makes me really happy. she doesn't have a name (#A2268694) and she's wedged herself into the corner of her cubby so as not to be seen. she's a sweet and terrified little soul who is overwhelmed at the shelter. she loves people and if you come for her, you should expect all things puppy because that's what I think she will be outside of this loud and scary place. She's a special gentle soul, though that I know for sure.

4/27/2026: Mr. Boomhauer was a move adopt this morning when going to leash him had had relaxed body in the runs, walks on a loose lead to his kennel.

4/27/2026: 04/27/26 Boomhauer was placed outside as a move adopt. Held hackles raised, growling and was pacing along the fence, and when the dog in the run next to him would get close to the fence would lunge at the fence and deep, forward barking at the other dog and try to start fence fighting.

4/29/2026: relaxed demeanor in kennel ready to go outside, kept kennel clean as well. walking he can walk forward at times when using treats he will take them and while more relaxed. not vocal in kennel either and will play with nylabone.

5/1/2026: 05/01/26 11:29 Lunging and forward barking at other dogs walking in front of kennel. When a volunteer was walking dog next to him out, Boomhauer became extremely overaroused, jumping and high pitched screaming and barking hitting kennel door.

4/24/2026: Dog is at the front of the kennel tail tapping, loose body and soft face. Walks out on a loose leash, wagging tail and loose body. Coming back from the runs she did not want to come back in I had to carry him in

4/27/2026: Snicker was a Move Adopt this morning and was walked on a loose leash to their new kennel in South. While in their kennel, Snickers was belting and yelping non-stop in the aisle I was cleaning on. I offered him some treats and they stopped for a bit before continuing again. When I got on the other side they stopped completely until they heard me on the opposite of their kennel and went back to yelping and belting again until they couldn’t hear me on the opposite side anymore.

We are looking for the perfect foster or forever home for sweet Lemon! 🍋 (Foster to adopt is an option).

Lemon was living in a home that was a less than ideal situation, and she was neglected. She was then dumped by the only family she had ever known at the shelter, and left to be euthanized. A wonderful temporary foster offered to step in and swoop Lemon up, saving her before she reached a fate she couldn’t come back from. She is now at risk at being sent back to the shelter and/or euthanized.

Lemon is a sweet 5 year old, Rhodesian mix, that loves to cuddle, hang out by your side, go on walkies, and take part in the occasional zoomies from time to time. Because of her past, she has a lot of emotional trauma that she is working through. She is currently seeing a trainer casually, to help her overcome her past traumas, and really just to help her become the best version of herself and learn to be a carefree dog again. She has had some skin issues, and recently had leg surgery for a Ruptured Cranial Cruciate Ligament. She is recovered. The skin issues are still being addressed by her vet. She is spayed and currently UTD on her vaccines. She would need to be the only dog in home for now, because of her past experiences. She needs someone with patience. If you’re looking to donate some of your time to loving on a sweet fur baby that will love you right back, and help her live the life she’s always deserved, Lemon is your girl. 💛

These two young sisters were found abandoned together and have been side by side ever since—finding comfort, play, and safety in each other.

Medical Notes

Both puppies are currently being treated for mild upper respiratory infections (URI/CIRD), with symptoms like coughing and slight nasal discharge. They are on doxycycline and receiving care.

Katrina (~16 lbs) and Catalina (~26 lbs) are both fully vaccinated (Rabies, Bordetella, DA2PP), dewormed, spayed, and microchipped. Their spay surgeries were routine (spayed on 4/18/26) with no complications. Overall, they are healthy puppies who just need a calm, clean environment to finish healing.

Behavior Summary

These sisters share a beautiful bond. They sleep curled up together, play gently, and look to each other for comfort.

Catalina is the more observant, calm sister—often watching the world go by, lounging on her cot, and slowly joining in play. She can be shy at first but warms up with gentle handling, treats, and reassurance.

Katrina is the playful, outgoing one—she loves to initiate games, bounce around, and encourage her sister to join in. She’s friendly, wiggly, and enjoys attention from people.

Both girls have shown steady improvement from initial shyness to relaxed, happy puppies with wagging tails and soft expressions. They are easy to handle, enjoy treats and pets, and pay little attention to other dogs. Their days are filled with playing, cuddling, and napping together.

Skyler is medically stable and recently underwent a routine neuter surgery (4/29/26) with no reported complications. He has been vaccinated, dewormed, and started on prevention medication. At only five months old, he is still very much a growing puppy.

🐾Behavior Summary:

Skyler is an extremely energetic, playful puppy who greets people with a wiggly body, fast wagging tail, and nonstop enthusiasm. Staff describe him as very active, jumpy, vocal, and eager for attention. He loves interacting with people and quickly becomes excited when someone enters his kennel.

Like many young puppies struggling in the shelter environment, Skyler is becoming increasingly stressed in confinement. He has been vocal, jumping on kennel doors, and “painting” his kennel when overwhelmed. Staff noted that he seemed especially stressed while wearing his cone after neuter surgery, but once his kennel was cleaned and he settled down, he was often able to relax and sleep. Enrichment and chew items help him decompress.

Storm is just a baby who has already experienced significant trauma—being hit by a vehicle and entering the shelter system through a bite quarantine.

Her behavior notes reflect a puppy in pain, not a dog with long-term behavioral issues. With proper healing, stabilization, and a safe environment, she has strong potential to grow into a normal, social young dog.
