4/29/2026: 1 med black and brown dog and 1 small black and brown dog roaming the back of property towards the bayou.

📝 Shelter Notes:

5/3/2026: Annie was vocal and alarm barking in kennel but once outside she became very sweet, accepted pets, and walked well on leash. Very friendly and wiggly during afternoon interaction.

5/5/2026: Annie greeted volunteer with a nervous stare and tucked tail initially but calmed down quickly. Easily leashed and mostly kept to herself in runs with occasional fence sniffing.

5/14/2026: Wiggly body, soft open mouth standing in front of kennel waiting to be leashed. Walked outside on a loose leash and became very wiggly and flippy returning from the runs.

5/15/2026: Initially leashed and walked nicely out of kennel but became jumpy and spun in circles from excitement. Once outside she walked with a semi-tight leash and later walked calmly back into kennel.

5/16/2026: Annie greeted volunteer with a loose body, wagging bobtail, and soft open mouth. Walked on a loose leash while following a trail of treats and sat quietly inside outside run. Barked when volunteer walked by later.

5/17/2026: Annie was open mouth panting with a neutral body when approached this morning. She leashed well and walked to the run on a semi-loose leash, occasionally jumping up at me, she ignored treats. Coming back in she exhibited the same behavior. Since coming in she's been on and off vocalizing.

5/17/2026: High pitched barking when volunteer entered row, standing on hind legs with ears visible over kennel cover. Once uncovered she had a loose wiggly tail and soft open mouth. Walked very well with loose leash back to eval.

4/29/2026: Weighed 43.8 lbs. Vaccinated with DA2PP-V, Bordetella, and Rabies 1 year. Dewormed. HW test low positive. Given Pyrantel and Advantage Multi.

5/4/2026: Spayed. Microchip implanted. Given E-Collar LG and Carprofen.

5/13/2026: Weighed 44.6 lbs. Heartworm status remains low positive.

*NEEDS RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 05/11/2026 @ 6AM

Elio arrived at the shelter as a stray on 05/06. He was severely matted and extremely fearful upon intake.

Due to the condition of his coat, he required sedation for grooming. Unfortunately, he has not yet tolerated handling and would benefit from rescue placement for continued care and support.

He suffers from severe dental disease, and his mouth is likely extremely painful, and this may contribute to his behavior.

Behavioral assessment notes:

“ABC 175 went to assess A595513. A595513 was laying in the kennel and when handler approached, A595513 showed teeth. 175 knelt down and A595513 charged the kennel door with force, attempting to bite. 175 opened the kennel door to attempt to leash A595513, who continued to snarl and snap. 175 was able to get leash on and then A595513 calmed down but put the brakes on. A595513 eventually came out of the kennel with tail tucked. In yard, A595513 explored independently, but would swivel to snarl and snap at handler at random moments (when wind would pick up or leash touched A595513). 175 knelt down and attempted to gently talk to A595513 and pet A595513. 175 was able to pet A595513, but A595513 low growled, showed teeth, and then attempted to bite. A595513 would not allow handling. 175 used figure 8 method to place A595513 back into kennel.

Originally he was going to be transferred to Agoura shelter since they are sister shelters, which would give him more time so that networkers and a rescue can help find him a foster.

but Downey canceled the transfer because he has a few days left of his kennel cough and Agoura shelter is not allowed to have a dog who is still on meds be transferred to their shelter.

This sadly means that Moo has jumped up to extremely urgent on the list.

If you are able to foster him for a couple of months, please text one of the main Downey shelter volunteers Jenn immediately.

His last chance is to find someone within a day or two at most.

3/21/2026: Olive is vocal towards other dogs when they pass by her kennel. When she sees a person on the row, she leans against the kennel gate on her hind legs and start to hop around the gate as well.

3/23/2026: Olive is a energetic and lovable puppy who likes to be vocal in order to receive attention from anyone in the row that she hears. She loves treats and plays with her toys often when she is bored in her kennel.

4/26/2026: When approaching kennel I observed that she painted her kennel overnight and greeted me by jumping on kennel door while high pitch vocalizing.

5/4/2026: When passing by Olive was laying on his bed, once I approached he ran up to the door and jumped. I redirect with treats. Olive presented loose body, wagging tail and neutral ears.

Genoa is a 3-year-old Staffordshire mix who recently gave birth and is now caring for her 4-day-old newborn puppies in the shelter. She is heartworm positive and has healing superficial wounds around her ears and head, though no further treatment was deemed necessary for the wounds at this time.

Despite being in a vulnerable postpartum state, she has only received basic intake care (vaccines, deworming, flea prevention) and urgently needs rescue support for heartworm treatment and proper recovery.

Her newborn puppies are underage and extremely fragile, requiring intensive care, monitoring, and a clean, low-stress environment that a shelter cannot provide.

📝 Shelter Notes:

4/28/2026: Walk up to the kennel, the dog was in the corner hunched over with tense body and dilated eyes. I place the leash on her, slowly walk out of the kennel, but then started to pull back and thrash on the leash. Tossed treats to guide her but she was not interested in them. I was able to walk her out of the row and waited while getting her kennel clean. The dog still held a tense body, head low, tail tucked between her leg and trembling. After her kennel got clean, she slowly walked back to her kennel and laid in the back of the kennel.

4/28/2026: Walked out of the kennel on the leash well. Able to complete work up with no restraint, dog maintained low soft wagging tail. Friendly, but timid.

4/30/2026: Avoided leash at first then once leash, she began walking on a semi-loose leash. while in kennel, she continuously would push out her food bin and become vocal.

4/20/2026: Shy but friendly. Walks on a loose lead as I take her outside and place her in a run. Took outside during PM. Very playful in runs. Knows how to play fetch and sits while waiting.

4/21/2026: After coming back from HSN, Vina was either standing by the kennel gate on all fours with her head low and staring out of her kennel or sitting down on cot with her head still lowered. I offered her some treats and she ignored them. She paid little attention to the other dogs vocalizing around her and has done a good job of keeping her kennel clean during the late afternoon.

4/22/2026: vina presented a timid body with tucked in tail, avoiding eye contact and lowered head. once leashed she walked on a slow loose leash heading in and out of out of soft building. did not show any interest in any to the dogs we passed.

4/26/2026: Vina would rush off her cot and lunge, show teeth, and vocalizes at any dogs that passes by her kennel. Made into Adopt Eval.

4/27/2026: Vina was laying down on her cot when I approached the kennel. As I walked into the kennel, she rose up from her cot and stood on it as I approached to pet her. She did a good job of keeping her kennel clean overnight. She allowed me to leash her and walk her to the outside runs. Vina was walked on a loose leash and neutral to and from the outside runs. While she was in her kennel, she would jump off her cot and charge towards any dog that passes by her kennel. When her kennel is covered, she is quiet and relaxed.

4/23/2026: Weighed 44.0 lbs. Normal exam.

4/23/2026 10:53: Was placed on tech eval for vomiting. This morning there was no vomit per ACT. BAR. Will leave on tech eval to monitor appetite and for any more vomit.

4/24/2026: Weighed 44.0 lbs. Normal exam. On tech eval for vomiting. No vomit observed or noted this morning. Vomit possibly due to recent spay. Removing from tech eval.

4/29/2026: Layla is in the back of the kennel laying down and vocalizing as I approach her kennel. Walking in to leash she stays laying down but allowing me to leash. As I walk out she follows me with a loose leash, dropped ears and loose body. Walked to and from the runs no issues.

4/29/2026: Approached dog to medicate. Dog immediately started alarm barking, pursed lips, hackles raised, dilated pupils. Offered wet dog food, dog would only approach food when I turned the corner. When I returned, the dog continued alarm barking with same body language as before.

4/30/2026: Layla is in the back of the kennel vocalizing and low growling. As I walk into the kennel I am able to leash and she follows me out of the kennel with a loose leash, low tail, and neutral face.

4/29/2026: Weighed 63.0 lbs. Dermatitis. S/O: alopecia, thickened skin, and redness of paws and extended up the legs. A: dermatitis. P: suspect underlying allergies, recommend private vet for allergy work up. Cephalexin 750mg BID x 14 days. Given 1.00 Cepha250 and 1.00 Cepha500.
