Where to Watch (Some) Hard to Find Magical Girl Series Legally!!

I am here to tell you where to legally watch some harder to find magical girl series (I live the US, BTW)!! Please know that Tubi and Fawesome are both free, ad supported legal sreaming sites, and that Retrocrush is a legal anime streaming service, but their library changes frequently.

Magical Sisters LuluttoLily, it's on the Toei animation YouTube channel, and episodes one-three are on Tubi!! (Dunno if this is considered hard to find but I hope this helps anyway!!)

Fancy Lala, it's on Tubi with subtitles!!

Sugar Sugar Rune, it's on Fawesome with subtitles, and on Tubi without subtitles!!

Magical Meow Meow Taruto, it's on Tubi with both the sub, and the dub!!

Full Moon O Sagashite (Looking for the Full Moon), it's on Tubi and Fawesome with subtitles!!

Jungle De Ikou! is on Tubi with a dub and sub!!

Lastly, Saint Tail and Adolescence of Utena are on Retrocrunsh (currently), but are behind a paywall, so I don't know much about it besides the fact that they are available on there legally.

I really hope that this helps!! ^w^

(My Review From MAL, bc I feel it puts my feeling into words well)

“Gushing Over Magical Girls”, to put it simply, is amazing. It’s peak and beautiful, I never thought we’d get to a day where I could say, I like this just as much, if not more than “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” or “Puella Magi Madoka Magica.” But, because I’m putting more effort into this review than one paragraph and am not going to be simple…

Plot:

At its basis, it’s already pretty unique, it’s about a teenage girl named Utena, who loves magical girls, and is told she can become a magical girl by this mascot character Venalita, when she accepts, she soon finds out that Venalita works for the evil organization, and that she has to fight the magical girls she once adored, but it turns out that the love she had for the was some sort of twisted, sadistic love.

The plot, in my opinion, was done incredibly well. First of all, the plot progressed at a good pace, I didn’t feel it went too fast, but I didn’t feel it went too slow either, though I know some people may find it too fast or too slow at some points. It had the nicest mix, where there it would be serious, with tons of action, and there would be other times, where it would be lighthearted and comedic. It didn’t feel dragged out. Second of all, it’s very obvious why it did so much better than Acro Trip, despite Acro Trip coming out first, and that’s for a two main reasons, one: The comedy was just done better, yes Acro Trip was funny at times, but when it came to Gushing Over Magical Girls, they took a risk, and went fanservice heavy, but they did it in a great way, and in the end they got the funny, risk taking, mature at times Gushing Over Magical Girls, as opposed to the occasionally funny, simple Acro Trip. I’ll mention the other reason in the next section. There’s only one thing that I wasn’t a fan of, was that the episode where Magia Magenta turns huge (episode twelve I think), was chapter fourty-two, but the place in the story the episode was actually at should have been twenty-two, and it’s a bummer we missed out on that chapter, as it was a Loco and Leber chapter!! But other than that, the plot is really good.

Characters:

Oh my god, the characters are freaking awesome. With a show like this, you’d think that the characters would be absorbed by the fanservice but no, they had something outside the fanservice.

There’s Utena, our protagonist, who, when not transformed, is a shy girl who gushes over magical girls (hence the name). But when transformed, she starts to embrace her true self, and it’s a lot of fun to see the first episode Utena vs last episode Utena, because the difference is insane, she has great character development.

Then there’s Kiwi, a girl who’s in love with Utena, and is deeply protective of her. She has this very unique personality that’s hard for me to put into words, but I guess the best word for her would be feisty.

Neroalice: Okay, so I’ll be mentioning more about her later but… She’s an elementary schooler, and in my opinion, she acted like an actual kid, and I like her just as much as Mamu Mashiro (Magical Girl 201) and Anya Forger, both of which are characters that are children, and act like children (in my opinion).

Leberblume: Okay, so she’s a tsundere to put it simply, she acts tough on the outside but is actually a softy when it comes to her friend, Loco Musica, and it’s adorable to see!!

Loco Musica: She is such a fun character, her personality is just… another one that’s hard to put into words, but I guess loud and outgoing maybe? I love her relationship dynamic with Leberblume, because they’re super cute together!!

Magia Azul: She has a ton of character development, after getting torn down by Utena, she decides to really start training, and getting stronger, so she can defeat Utena, and eventually unlocks her ultimate form.

Magia Sulfur and Magia Magenta: They don’t develop too much unfortunately, but more is coming for them, promise!!

Overall I like the characters a ton, and they aren’t just consumed by fanservice!!

And the Acro Trip comparison, Acro Trip, in my opinion, had little to no character development, which is another reason why I feel it wasn’t done as well, as opposed to Gushing Over Magical Girls, which had so much character development, and one of the main things most people like in a story is the character development, it's not as fun when the character stays the same, it just feels the same, and I feel Acro Trip missed that opportunity, it had the potential to have character development, but they decided to keep them the same.

Fanservice:

One of the main controversies regarding the show is the amount of fanservice, and the character’s ages (fourteen) but here’s a fun fact, the characters were originally going to be sixteen, but was changed since most magical girls are younger. But I think, while yes, there’s a crap ton of fanservice, it does a good job at having a story beyond the fanservice, and that’s why I was able to enjoy it so much. But if we are comparing it to the manga, the anime is significantly worse when it comes to it, so if you still want the story but with a tiny bit less fanservice, you should read the manga, it is still fanservice heavy, but things like nudity generally wasn’t near as detailed (though it still was at times).

When it comes to Neroalice, who is depicted as an elementary schooler, they were very careful about not overly sexualizing her, she was never nude, her outfit isn’t revealing, where you would see pretty much every character's underwear, her dress never did anything, it just stayed in place. She was generally not shown in the sexual situations, and most things she did that was definitely for fanservicey reasons can also be easily explained as her acting like a child and playing with them, not realizing what she was doing was sexual. So yeah, I appreciate how they depicted Neroalice!!

Music:

It’s great. I love it!! They have music that fits what’s happening, and it’s the kind of soundtrack I’d enjoy listening to by itself!! Plus, the OP is super fun, and if you know what they're saying, it makes a lot of sense, same for the ED, which I RARELY watch EDs, but I did due to how much I enjoyed the song!!

Animation/Artstyle:

Great. It’s so good, it's very nice, and the show has such a great artstyle too!! I especially love the colors chosen, because damn, whoever chose the colors knew exactly what to do, and how to just make it perfect!!

Overall Impression:

I thoroughly enjoyed this anime, love the characters, and am so excited for season two (because it just gets better!!), and I feel if you can get past the fanservice that it's an enjoyable watch!! ^w^
