How is a "magical girl" defined?
I'm familiar with general magical girls (ex. Sailor Moon, Precure, etc), but the other day I wondering if stuff like Tokimeki Tonight counts? This thought had me curious about how you would define magical girls? What exactly makes a magical girl? Does something like My-Hime count too?
I’m a little worried my characters’ planned alter ego names don’t fit
So, the team I’m working on for my story is currently called Gloss Endeavor. Since my team has an elemental theme to it, I want that to be referenced in the individual names of the characters, and my first idea is Latin roots being added onto the names. Since my elements for the team members are air, water, rock, metal, and electricity (chosen because these elements are the most powerful in a modern urban environment), the girls would be called Aero Gloss, Hydro Gloss, Petro Gloss, Ferro Gloss, and Electro Gloss respectively.
My main worry is… Are these names “cutesy” enough? I also want that aspect in their magical girl personas, at the very least, and I’m not to sure if it fits. I’m pretty early into development, so stuff can be moved around, including adding a motif or two. My story’s more focused on the characters anyways, so I can afford to tweak some of the magical girl identity aspects.

Sailor Moon parody in Ojarumaru
In 20th series episode 17, "Akane Leader ni Naru" (アカネ リーダーになる, "Akane Becomes the Leader"), there's a scene in which the Kooni Trio (Akane the red oni, Aobei the blue oni, and Kisuke the yellow oni) dress up in Sailor Moon-esque costumes in order to intimidate Ojarumaru into returning Great King Enma's scepter. The trio even say, "In the name of Great King Enma, we'll judge you!" (エンマ大王さまに代わっておさばきよ!, "Enma Daiou-sama ni kawatte osabaki yo!"), a play of Sailor Moon's "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!" (月に代わっておしおきよ!, "Tsuki ni kawatte oshioki yo!").
As a side note, Kotono Mitsuishi (the voice of Sailor Moon) is a recurring cast member on Ojarumaru as Princess Okame and Akamurasaki Shikibu.

Is there any good book about magical girls out there?
And I don't just mean girls who do magic, I mean the actual magical girl trope/aesthetic. If there aren't any I'd settle for a good fanfic.
Edit: And I mean books, not manga, not comics or graphic novels.
[I had to bring this conversation here cuz a spam bot is malfunctioning.] i reaaaaaalllly want people to talk about this more. bc SLAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY QUEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

What are some qualities Magical Girls typically don’t have?
I want to write a story involving a team of Magical Girls that don’t fit the typical mold of what a Magical Girl is or what they embody. They inherited their Magical Girl powers from their families instead of being scouted out for them because of some good quality, and most of them only reluctantly join the team for selfish reasons. Over the course of the story, though, I want them to earn their “goodness” through some self-discovery and experience, bringing them a little closer to that idealized version of a Magical Girl.
I’m interested in this as a concept, but I haven’t consumed much Magical Girl media yet, so I’m not sure what kind of traits I should give these characters for their arcs. What do you all think?

I'm making a magical girl videogame. Opinions welcome
I'm a 41yo woman making my dream game but I'm pretty much stuck in the 90s references and such. I really want to know if this is making any sense for someone else than me. We're strugglin finding a publisher and I'm not sure if we're on the right track.
Managed to get a physical copy of Magical Battle Arena and also Precure plushies.
Magical girl parody in Ojarumaru
Ojarumaru 12th series episode 33 "Mahou Shufu Ai-chan" (魔法主婦 愛ちゃん, "Magical Housewife Ai-chan") has a parody of the magical girl genre, which appears to be inspired by various series such as Sally the Witch, Himitsu no Akko-chan, and Nurse Angel Ririka (director Akitaro Daichi also worked this one).
In the episode, Ai, the mother of the Tamura family, comes across a manga called "Mahou Shojou Lovely" (魔法少女ラブリー, "Magical Girl Lovely") while cleaning, which she remembers reading long ago. She gets sucked into Ojarumaru's eboshi (a type of ancient Japanese hat) and lands in a world where a king tells her that she must become a magical housewife to help people and gives her a wand, on condition that she can't reveal her identity to anyone. Transforming into a magical housewife, she generates objects to help clean a countertop and bathroom tiles, and cool beer. She also uses the wand at a supermarket to fast forward the clock so that the meat on display gets discounted at 40% off.
Keeping in line with Ojarumaru's wholesome atmosphere, there's no violence or big conflict. The appeal comes from the repetition of Ai using her housework skills with a magical touch, as well as keeping her identity a secret.
In case you're unfamiliar with Ojarumaru, it's a long-running anime that's been airing on NHK Educational TV since 1998. The show sometimes does parodies of Japanese pop culture that older audiences watching would find interesting and the magical housewife episode leans into that.
