Has anyone here bought a ton of stuff then quit spending and went on to use those for years?

For the first time in 4 years I am nearing the point where I did not spend a single penny buying new shaving gear for a whole year. I like it, I do miss having new scents and stuff but I am very pleased with where my collection stands right now. Has any of you had a similar experience where you bought a ton of stuff then just stopped and went on to enjoy whatever you have for years? How long has it been for you since you stopped buying stuff?

Which of these are best for complete beginner?

Got a starter kit from Maggard. No clue which one to start with. Never done this before. Thank you!

You guys…

I know that Acqua di Parma has received a lot of flack here as of the past couple of months, but by God it is S-tier stuff. I tried a sample of it many years back and thought it was some of the best cream I’d ever tried. Great lather, good slickness, and an unmatched post-shave feel. Is it expensive? Hell yes! This set cost me about $200 off “Needless Markups,” but it is SO good. All-titanium razor and brush set by Design94 (Germany) with a Nacet blade. This is my once-a-year splurge.

Razor just won't shave (Help please!)

Heya! I need some assistance with the razor in the picture.

Context: A friend got a custom razor as a gift, forgot about it, and passed it to me to try and get it sharpened.

I have experience with knives, and know that razors require a different technique.

The razor has no real edge when I got it. Couldn't slide paper at all.

From research, I've gathered that 1k > 8k > 12k seems to be the way to go. I've been stuck on the 1k to no avail. Been using X strokes, flipping on the spine, keeping it flat (unlike knives). I'm able to get the blade sharp enough to slice paper, and it can bite into my thumb. But no luck with hairs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it should be sharp enough to shave hairs at 1k before moving up, and the spine should be angled upon manufacture in a way that perfectly allows the edge to be sharpened as long as it remained flat. At the same time, I've read that some blades are made of cheaper steels and can never really get sharp enough (will need you guys' input on this).

I don't know if the person who made this specialises in razors since they told my friend they needed to sharpen it themselves.

Anyway, that's all I can think of.

Feel free to ask me questions for more details!

All help is appreciated!

UPDATE: I've checked in with my friend and can more or less confirm that it's likely a decorative blade.

That being said, I'm thinking of getting them a proper one that's easy to sharpen and maintain. Any recs?

I GOT IT!

I’m gonna shave with it now but I need to know - HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF IT SO IT LASTS A LIFETIME?

Edit : I just shaved and OH MY GOD IT FIXES MY ISSUE WITH THE TECH BEING TOO MILD! i used to struggle to get through under my chin and my mustache with the tech + wilcoxen sword blade and GC + same blade just sails through, and i barely got any irritation/burn when i applied my old spice after shave. ITS BASICALLY PERFECT AND IM ONE AND DONE THANK GOD. more blade feel ofc but i honestly liked it, and the sound of the blade is ADDICTING.

Gillette Aristocrat Adjustable L4 1966

Just arrived in my collection: this splendid Gillette Slim Aristocrat Adjustable. Dated to the fourth quarter of 1966, it truly surprised me because I honestly believe this razor has never shaved a beard in its nearly 60 years of existence.

I bought it at a great price from a kind lady (clearly not an expert or razor collector) on a Spanish e-commerce site, and judging from the hastily taken photos in the listing, I would never have imagined ending up with this little gem, practically unused, in my hands.

The plating is completely intact, the mechanical parts work perfectly, and when I cleaned it after it arrived, I realized the razor is basically brand new. To my eyes, there are absolutely no signs of use.

I’m genuinely thrilled and can’t wait to give it what I assume will be its very first shave in almost 60 years!

Tcheon Fung Sing hanging in there.

* **Prep:** Cold Water

* **Brush:** ZENITH- unbleached boar 28mm aluminum handle shaving brush A28 XSE.

* **Razor:** Gillette - Slim adjustable 1966.

* **Blade:** Astra - Superior Platinum. (2)

* **Lather:** TFS - original shave soap.

* **Post Shave:** CeraVe- Moisturising lotion.

* **Post Shave:** Bond- Tobacco, whiskey & cedar ASL.

Brought out the big Zenith boar to hasten the demise of the TFS yet it showed strong resistance and there is still a good few shaves there .

Two good passes with the slim and a nice boozy finish with the Bond ASL.

The second picture is a small vinted find definitely some bargains to be had there men .

Advice on a starter DE with sensitive skin

I’m in the market for a new DE razor. I used to use a DE for a while, then fell off. I’m 46 and haven’t shaved with a DE since my early 30’s. That’s a depressing thought.

Right now I have a cheap Gillette 7 o’Clock razor.

I’d like to get something decent.

Here are the problems.

  1. I have sensitive skin
  2. I have some dexterity issues in my right hand, where the pinky finger will go numb.

I’ve been eyeballing three razors: The Goodfellas Smile Bayonetta, Reggie’s Razors Jupiter, and the Mühle Neo.

I’m in the US, so anything stateside is doable.

I’ve already got a shaving bowl, brush and some of the white Proraso. I’ve attempted to shave with the Gillette, while it’s certainly not great it works.

Currently I work from home and only need to be presentable once a week for staff meetings.

My ideal budget is to keep this under $60.

Any guidance from the hive mind would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Just got my sample packs, now to spend the next 6 months figuring out which ones the best. Any advice on how to best do this?

*Edit: Forgot to say that I only shave my head, not my face, if it matters. Also, how many times should I use the same blade before replacing it?

I'm going to be using the same soap and razor (Proraso Red and Mühle R41 - though if there are recommendations for a cheap safety razor that is better I'm up for the advice) to keep everything as uniform as possible.

I tend to cut my head a lot when shaving it, though I've only been doing it for the past couple weeks so I'm looking for one that'll help minimize that (though obviously improving technique and pre-shave routine will help more I imagine).

Long time lurker, first time DE user here. It is apparently THAT good.

The main reason I switched from Mach3s were financial, I shave my head almost everyday and my beard few times a week, I'm 24, so 30 euros per 10 blade packs seemed unnecessary. Today I tried a double edged razor for the first time, got a Mühle R89, Proraso shaving soap and a Barbury's brush.
It was truly the smoothest, most enjoyable shave I've ever had. I only went for the beard this time, had to do a lot of passes both with the grain and against the grain but almost none felt irritating. I'm not sure if I was happy with the brush or not, it did leave some strands here and there. In the end I managed with only a few nicks (?) around the adam's apple, though they were not cuts but looked like the razor tugged the hairs? I'm not sure. I'm just very pleasantly surprised, and I'd love some tips for a newcomer!

First SOTD!

I just got my leaf in today and I love it. I started shaving my head a few months ago after realizing my hairline had abandoned me. I was looking for a way to make the process more enjoyable. I tried a cheap DE but found it hard to maneuver around my lumpy dumb head. A lot of posts I saw recommended leaf for head shaving and I scoffed at buying a razor this expensive but then caved in.

Still trying out blades from a variety pack. Not a huge fan of the Walmart brush either but it works for now.

Also had to evict the sink gremlin a few times. (2nd pic)

After 2 years...

After 2 years of using Astra greens, cella green, a perfecto shaving brush and a parker srx shavette I decided to make some upgrades, bought this stirling soap and a yaqi brush, really stoked to see the difference in the experience, next thing I'd like to buy is a noble otter soap, don't know which one yet

OneBlade first shave

This morning was my first shave with my new OneBlade SE SS razor using a Feather proprietary blade. I did a face lather with Proraso white sensitive skin using the Omega synthetic brush followed by Proraso aftershave and balm.

The shave was remarkably smooth and efficient on two passes which inspired me to do an ATG pass, which typically I don’t, due to lasting skin irritation.

I didn’t feel it during the third pass but afterwards I felt it, quite a bit in fact. The alum block helped but I’m going to probably feel it for at least a day maybe two.

I did order the OneBlade carbon blades as I have read here that they are smoother on the skin, last longer and less expensive alternative.

Happy shaving y’all!

Newbie with DE SR

Hello guys, just bought a King C Gillette DE, now I know it's not a very good brand, but I bought it for 17€, so for trying it out isn't so bad. I used the included blades for the first shave. However it made quite the mess with bleeding and irritation, almost all over my face. Can someone with experience give me some tips? Maybe better blades? Maybe better technic? Very open for constructive criticism, since it was my first on DE. Thank you all in advence, cheers!

Gillette new sc + every blade from razor emporium

Gillette blue blades not pictured. Will probably add some pinewood derby putty in the handle to weight it down

Grand Shave King SOTD

**May. 13, 2026**

* **Prep:** Razor Emporium Pre-shave soap

* **Brush:** YAQI Mysterious Space 24mm

* **Razor:** Grand Shave King Self Lubricating

* **Blade:** Gillette Silver Blue (2)

* **Post Shave:** Clubman Classic

* **Post Shave:** Osma Alum Block

* **Fragrance:** Stirling Clubman

First shave with the Grand Shave King. This razor is Henson Mild level smooth. Absolutely no bite and almost zero blade feel. The top cap open comb does indeed provide an extra bit of lubrication and although Stirling has never lacked in providing glide, this felt even smoother.

Of course this also means it is not the most efficient razor. I needed all three passes plus an almost complete 4th pass to get the shave I desire. Even with the extra pass there was zero alum or splash feedback.

I enjoy the double open comb razors. I have the Yaqi DOC Mellon as well as the RazoRock Daily DOC. Both are more aggressive and more efficient with much more blade feel than the Shave King.

I’ll definitely be revisiting this razor often. I may use a heftier handle next time - the aluminum is a bit too light for me.
