Morrisons store manager sacked for tackling shoplifter

I know this is Morrisons but it's the same for every supermarket so let me say it clearly for any of you wanting to be a hero.

It's not your shop.

It's not your money.

Whenever I see a shoplifter stealing, I don't speak to them, I don't even look at them. I pretend like they don't even exist. Once they are out of my view, I will walk over and tell the security guard. Then I resume my position of putting product on shelf.

That way I can ensure I never lose my job.

Anyway to report a line manager for not giving holiday despite 2 weeks notice and no one else in my department on holiday that day

I am wondering if there’s a way to deal with this as talking with the manager won’t work she doesn’t like listening and doesn’t give out holiday even when applied for 2 weeks in advance

My co worker was told the reason for him being denied the Sunday off was because someone in our department already had it off while this was probably true me and him are the only ones that work the Sunday we are both multi skilled but our manager has set out strict rules with team support not to pull us from our department unless necessary we have never been pulled off our department on a Sunday any idea on how to resolve this?

Days off because of mental health

So whats the days off can you have from having mental health problems? I am not diagnosed with anything nor have a GP at the moment. Been working night shift now for over 4 years and had some sickness here and there but first warning went away couple months ago. Now for the last 6 months i had a bit of a downward spiral when it comes to my mental health and had a bit of a anxiety or panic attack it seems because it felt like i would rather end myself than go into work again. So i called once told them im not coming in for mental health and every day i thought i dont want to come in today either.

Now i had 4 days off from my 5 contracted days and still wondering if i should show up to work tonight. Just feel so exhausted but i feel bad leaving other workers in a tighter spot aswell. I won't mind the absence meeting but i wonder whats the allowed days to take for mental health?

Why did Tesco wait so long to discount their Easter chocolate?

My local Tesco has had so much Easter chocolate on the shelf and none of it has been selling. They finally dropped the price today to a reasonable amount. I was wondering why they waited so much longer than their rivals?

How are substitutions decided by the pickers?

Just received a delivery today and it had me wondering, when a product is unavailable and you need to decide if a replacement is suitable, does every picker in a store have to share the one magic 8 ball or can you bring one from home?

Update to applications

So I’m someone without any experience. Currently 22, but it’s been beyond hell. When I used to apply for Tesco jobs in the past, they didn’t care to ask for experience but now it’s literally a Yes or No question. Selecting No means an automatic rejection and Yes would get you blacklisted.

To people that hire at tesco when it says you prefer 6 months of experience is that just a suggestion or firm on it and do you guys blacklist?

What is the gift card scam?

The same customers come in everyday - I work front end/checkout area - and buy iTunes, Steam giftcards. Tesco themselves seem to have no way of policing this other than restricting quantity of purchase per transaction.

I'm just curious as to what these people even benefit from doing this, are they extracting the value of it somehow? But if it's your money you already had, being extracted? What is the benefit? No one I've asked seems to know

We have a Shoplifter's trolley!

Last week we spotted a shoplifter stuffing items into one of those shopping trolley things.

A big bag on wheels basically.

They eventually abandoned it, full of Finest steak etc. at the back of the store.

We've still got it and it's almost brand new! Shame to waste it.

Personally, I want to attach a Police style sticker saying 'Seized for attempted shoplifting.'

That aside, what can we, should we or could we do with it? Is it evidence? 🤷‍♂️

Working in 2 stores on the same day?

If I work at an away store in the morning can I work my regular shift in the afternoon at my home store with no worries? Do I need to inform a manager?

Also, how do I go about going to an away store? It’s my first time!

Thanks x

STOP TRYING TO PREVENT THEFT

I used to work for Sainsbury's in the warehouse, with my main job dealing with loading/unloading lorries. I knew a security guard who I struck up a friendship with who used to get threats all the time. Mainly because he was patrolling the store, but also because he was originally from Africa. Anyhoo, after a few days of him not being in work I asked around and was shocked by what I was told. Apparently he had a run in with someone in the store who took exception to him for whatever reason, leaving the store and issuing threats. They waited for him to leave, followed him home and shortly upon arriving home, the property was set alight and he was killed.

When I worked there I was older than many of those who worked on the shop floor. There was a younger group in their early twenties who loved when someone tried to shoplift because they would all steam in and play vigilante. On one occasion they chased a shoplifter into the roads near the store, pinning him to the ground while taunting him and filming the encounter. They showed me later and asked why I didn't join them? My response was simple. The shop in insured. You are not. Not only is it not your job to physically intervene when there is no threat to life, but by intervening you run the very real risk of escalating a somewhat benign encounter into a violent one.

I have trained for many years in self-defence, grappling with some MMA and that's all great, but I know that any encounter is a lottery. You have no idea who that person is, what they're carrying on them, or whether they have people with them? If someone is in danger, that is a different scenario, but if it is simply produce that can be replaced leave it to people who are trained in de-escalation and restraint and control techniques. Also, when you interject yourself into a situation you run the real risk of legal action should you cause injury to that person due to lack of training.

I know people feel angry at the injustice they see all around them, but in all honesty, if the owners of these huge retail stores really cared about their staff, as they claim they do, they would pay them more and ensure that there was suitable levels of security.

Note that this is not my story but it is a true story from a friend of mine who doesn't have reddit

Tesco bonus,I left yesterday.

I left Tesco yesterday (18th) after 3 years of delivery driving.

I said goodbye to my line manager who wasn't best pleased I was going as they are struggling for decent drivers.

She seemed to take some glee in telling me I wouldn't get the bonus as it would be in May pay packet.

Is this true?

TBH I'm not bothered about a couple of hundred quid but on principle I think I deserve it as they've taken the piss out of the decent drivers over the last year (that's why I've left)

Work place hostility

This woman I work with doesn’t like me, which I have no problem with. However, every shift I work with her she will make rude comments towards me and belittle me infront of customers. Asking if I checked a reciept when I am already taking off something, saying i’m not paying attention and she can’t do certain things because she’s old so it’s up to me (pick up baskets) and nitpick when I’m not doing it fast enough. I don’t know why she doesn’t like me because from what I know I haven’t done anything and she’s the only person who has a problem with me. Is there anything I can do about it? A few other people in work know how she is towards me but this is my first job and i’m getting borderline bullied by a woman three times my age.
