Bottom shelf tequila recommendations for wedding bar

I need help picking tequilas for my wedding bar. I'm no connoisseur, more of a whiskey and rum guy, and I generally buy the slightly-above-bottom-shelf bottles (Espolon blanco/repo has been my go-to, but I've also enjoyed Tromba and Altos blanco) but weddings are expensive enough and I don't like my guests THAT much (it's open bar), so I'm looking for the best cheap option. I've tried a few of these but it's been so long that I forget whether I liked them.

The drinks are going to be basic spirit + mixer (paloma, tequila + soda) or shots, not margaritas or other shaken/stirred drinks, and most of my guests are either rum/whiskey people or vodka soda people. I just want a tequila on-hand just in case.

I plan to pick up 2-3 bottles to try before I commit to one for the bar. Here are the ones I'm considering (prices are CAD):

  • Cazadores Blanco - $41.50
  • Cazadores Reposado - $43.50
  • Hornitos Plata - $41.50
  • Hornitos Reposado - $42.50
  • El Jimador 100% Agave Blanco - $41.50
  • El Jimador Reposado - $43.50

These ones are also available but aren't on my list, either because they're Sauza, or because they're less known to me and pricier. Feel free to suggest one if it's worth checking out over the ones above.

  • Sauza - $36.75
  • Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver - $43.50
  • Jose Cuervo Tradicional Reposado - $44.50
  • Rosemont Tequila Silver - $43 (this one's a Quebec distiller and only available there, just throwing it out there in case someone's tried it)

Thanks in advance!

Jackpot clearance sale find

Had to do a quadruple take to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me when I walked by. Four great bottles at an over 50% discount is absolutely insane that I’ve never seen before so snagged one of each without hesitation. I felt like I was robbing the place walking out with these at those prices!

It’s about to be a great Friday night popping these open and having myself I nice little impromptu tasting.

I bought this because I love the standard Bozal Mezcal, but I really did not like this one (drinking straight or with soda). Is there any cocktail you’ve had this in and really liked?

I love a mezcal. Usually love them straight, but also generally love cocktails. It makes me sad that I paid for this and just can’t find what to do with it.

Going back to the US (VA / NC) where to stop?

I'm coming back to the US and am heading from VA to NC.. I'm looking to bring back a bottle or 3 of Añejo or XA with me, and am wholly unfamiliar with what shops are good, and their pricing.

I know NC is state-run so I'd assume a crap selection?

I'll be heading through Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Greensboro, or Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Durham.

TIA for suggestions!

Question about bottle “safety” to drink

Hello everyone,

I received this case of Casa Azul Añejo tequila. 5 out of the six bottles are fine but when I opened this last one. The cork had seemed to not fit properly under the plastic seal and some tequila had evaporated onto the outside of the bottle.

The metal topper of the cork also has some residue on it.

Is this safe to consume?

Thank you all in advance!

Delicious!

Grabbed this G4 Reposado Single Barrel Lot 10 from Westchester Wine Warehouse and I get why people hype it up. Really clean agave on the nose with some vanilla and light oak, nothing overdone. Taste is super balanced—sweet agave, a little caramel, some pepper, and that mineral thing G4 always has. Doesn’t get too woody which I like for a repo. Finish hangs around with a bit of spice. Definitely sipping this, not mixing. Anyone else try Lot 10?

Tequila Noob Buys $200+ Bottle

Howdy y’all,

I am a bourban guy and dont know a lick about tequilas so please excuse my lack of knowledge. My boss is a tequila guy (claims he likes anejos, specifically Don Julio 1942 Anejo) and is retiring tomorrow, so I wanted to get him a good tequila for a gift. He’s done a lot for me, and I was looking to spend $200-$300 on something he wouldn’t buy for himself.

The TW employee recommended the Don Roberto 1924 Limited 5 year Extra Anejo, which I purchased.

Is this going to be somthing he’ll like, or did I screw up and buy something dumb? Any information or input is appreciated.

Finally! My yearly tequila tasting is tomorrow and this is how it’s going down 🤠!

Hello fellow tequila enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to share that my one year tequila tasting lineup goes live tomorrow, and this year, I’m doing something special. We’re hosting a white attire themed party to honor all things Blanco tequila. After featuring assorted expressions in the past, this year just felt right to return to the essence of tequila. Blancos deserve the spotlight for a full year before we dive back into aged expressions.

What makes this tasting truly exciting is that each bottle features a different ABV, no two are the same. We’ll be going from 40% all the way up to 55% (110 proof), which is the maximum allowed by the CRT for tequila. This lineup literally explore the full legal spectrum. Someone wisely suggested we move from lower ABV to higher to prime the palate, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.

We have a special lineup of seven different NOMs represented, with the exception of NOM 1414, which gets a double feature. Each bottle has its own story. I’ll share a fun fact for each, but I’ll give you the lineup here. See below a quick snapshot with the order, including the NOMs, ABVs, and some fun facts.

Cheers to a year of Blancos!

Lost Lore Tequila Blanco

40% ABV | NOM 1414

Fun fact: Uses champagne yeast fermentation and even incorporates the “Mozart method”, which is when classical music is played during fermentation. This is believed to influence yeast activity and create a cleaner, more floral profile.

ArteNOM 1123

43% ABV | NOM 1123

Fun fact: Produced at Cascahuín using lowland agave and traditional methods that aim to recreate early 1900s tequila production styles.

Fuenteseca Cosecha 2018

44.8% ABV | NOM 1146

Fun fact: This tequila rests in stainless steel for up to 2 years before bottling! No wood, just time, allowing the agave to fully express itself with incredible depth.

True Michoacán in a bottle. This tequila is known for its brininess. Perfect for a Mexican dirty martini perhaps?!

Atanasio “Fibras y Fuego”

46% ABV | NOM 1599

Fun fact: A small portion is distilled in an 8L pot still and blended back in, creating a layered profile—plus it’s fermented with fibers and finished over a direct flame hence the name.

Cazcanes “Nuestros Raíces”

47% ABV | NOM (not CRT registered)

Fun fact: Produced outside CRT certification using artesian methods, including natural fermentation and a vintage Chevy engine-powered shredder.Look for the second 2026 releases this June, as it is the first spirit ever awarded a perfect 100 score by the Wine Enthusiasts Award

Manuscrito “Cuento Corto”

50% ABV | NOM 1643

Fun fact: Made by three friends who moved to Mexico to craft tequila, this small batch release (≈3000 bottles) is open air fermented with fibers for a raw, expressive profile. Cuento Corto, refers to a “short story” being told in this tequila, by resting it for less than 60 days in Four Roses Bourbon barrels.

Alma del Jaguar “Nocturna”

50.5% ABV | NOM 1414

Fun fact: Wild yeast fermentation + unfiltered bottling preserves natural oils, while the brand also supports jaguar conservation, tying terroir to environmental impact. The name references the Jaguars’ nocturnal nature.

Amatitena Barrancas

55% ABV | NOM 1477

Fun fact: Uses a “fruit basket” distillation method (similar to pechuga) with ingredients like wild mango and mamey, creating a uniquely aromatic, high-proof expression. This is quite possibly my favorite in the whole line up.

Edit: including the post tasting games/ competitions we are doing after. If anyone has more game suggestions, do share!!!

Game #1: D is for Drink. This is an actually drinking game I bought at target. It’s a category game. Since everyone is already tipsy it’ll be fun to pass around a category card “things that go in a taco” and whoever breaks the chain gets eliminated until we have a winner

Game #2: Piñata! I have 2 inflatable baseball bats. 2 contenders will stand inside a small square and bat the other until someone looses their footing and steps outside the square. Once someone looses, another person in queue steps in to dethrone the other person. Last man standing wins a price

Game #3: bottle dodge: same concept as above, but this time 2 ppl are stepping into the path of a flying plastic bottle attached to my ceiling fan. They must dodge the bottle while blindfolded, basically duck whenever they think it’s coming. The person that goes 1 min with the least amount of hits wins.

Game #4: you must not drop your balloon while at the same time attempting to put on a sweater. First one to finish wins.

Game #5: partner dance! Same as above. You and your partner will have to dance together while keeping the balloon between the 2 of you. No hands allowed and no dropping the balloon. Listen for commands from your host like “jump” or “squat” and complete the challenge to stay in the game. Last couple standing wins a prize

Game #6: mystery flip: red solo cups are hiding shot glasses underneath! Test your luck. You might get a shot of crickets, a shot of tequila, a shot of water, money, or more!

Decanting

I’m recently getting back into tequila, and know it helps with certain brands. But haven’t heard much about it, compared to my bourbon folks…

Is it considered a normal thing with tequila?

Haven’t tried any of these except El Tosoro Anejo, and Ocho Blanco. Which would you pick?

Working on a Paloma Recipe, both for using straight Grapefruit Juice or Grapefruit Soda

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila (Blanco is traditional, though you can use Reposado (as pictured above) if you want to add more body, caramel notes, or a bruléed grapefruit flavor)
  • 1/2 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz Grapefruit juice or Grapefruit soda (Jarritos is a popular choice, but Squirt or Fever-Tree also work well)
  • 2 oz Club Soda or Grapefruit juice (only if using fresh juice above)
  • Pinch of salt (or a salted rim)
  • Garnish: Grapefruit or lime wedge & an optional sprig of fresh mint

Instructions

  • Prep the glass: Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a highball (or other) glass and dip it into a small plate of coarse salt (if you're salting the rim).
  • Mix: Add tequila, lime juice, and a pinch of salt to your glass.
  • Chill: Fill your glass with ice cubes.
  • Top: Pour in the grapefruit soda and stir gently to combine without losing the carbonation.
  • Serve: Garnish with your citrus slice and fresh sprig and enjoy.

Notes

  • Tequila Choice: Blanco"Silver" is the standard because the more agave-forward, peppery notes cut through the sugar of the soda. Using a Reposado (as pictured above) will result in a smoother, slightly oaky profile that pairs well with fresh-squeezed juice.
  • Carbonation: If you are using a grapefruit soda like Jarritos or Squirt, avoid shaking the drink. This could cause your Paloma to go flat and possibly can create an unwanted overflow. Always stir gently at the end.
  • Salt: A tiny pinch inside your Paloma can act as a flavor enhancer, suppressing the bitterness of the grapefruit and making the Paloma's citrus flavors pop.
  • Citrus: While bottled soda provides the classic grapefruit flavor, freshly squeezed lime juice is non-negotiable. This provides the necessary acidity to balance the soda's sweetness.

New to Mezcal

Between these two entry level Mezcal, is there a recommendation for a newbie? Thanks!

Is it just me or…..does anyone else not like anejo/extra anejo. I think the tequila takes on too much flavor from the barrels. I strictly collect blancos and reposados only.

New to tequila

I’m new to tequila and mezcal. Coming from a scotch and bourbon drinker, I wanted to branch out a learn about a new spirit. I picked up this Tequila Ocho Reposado and wanted to know what was some more good Reposados under $100. Mainly going to be sipping the tequila not mixing.

Need recommendations

Alright yall I need some recommendations. I barely started drinking tequila and wanted to get a bottle to celebrate finishing my second to last semester of nursing school. I’m open to anything 200 or less. There’s a drink from Saltgrass steakhouse “El jefe” that I enjoyed. Either neat or cocktail.
