Final product after five mockups lol

You guys are wonderful and I appreciate all of your feedback! I’ve made the final corset out of a thick satin coutil with flat and spiral steel boning. I’ve included an image of the pattern I drafted for the overbust corset to which I cut down to make it underbust. I made this primarily to wear under custom fit dresses, but might wear over silk slip style dresses as well.

Turning work shorts into booty shorts.

A while back I ordered the shortest version of our work shorts we could get to see what they're like. My wife appreciated them on me in a delightfully unexpected way, which I very much appreciated in turn. Well, if she liked them short, maybe even shorter would yield even better results?

Turns out I was onto something with that theory.

Anyhow, here are my Reno 911'd work shorts. I was only limited by the self imposed restriction of not blocking the pockets by the cargo pockets. Regular length shorts on the left side and the end result of my work on the right.

I'm also curious as to how long it'll take until I hear a comment about the length. I can honestly say it's the official uniform shorts, though. The Texas summer is coming so I'm sure I'll get my use out of these.

Long skirt finished! 2nd project ever.

I wanted a long skirt with pockets, decided to make this one from McCalls. I didn’t have enough fabric to cut everything the right way and made a mistake with the lining so I hand finished all the seams on the inside. I did manage to make the pockets bigger. My switch 2 actually fits inside them now haha.

Ignore the toxic pink socks please haha.

Pattern: mcCall 8609

Fabric outer layer: yarn-dyed cotton twill flannel (creamsicle orange, sky blue, dusty red plaid) deadstock from Mood fabrics

Lining: orange cotton poplin from The Final Stitch.

Interfacing is fusible and I added it to the waistband and pocket.

Machine: Janome 1522

Notions invisible zipper from Mood fabrics, little hook and eye for the waistband

Lessons Learned

First practice with pockets and linings, learned french seams, and I now know how to add an invisible zipper. And had some good practice in hand sewing. I also need to now make a silk underskirt or something cause the friction it has with my legs is annoying AF.

The construction of Elizabeth Taylor's dress in A Date With Judy (1948)

I discovered this dress online recently and fell in love with everything about it. Now I'm wondering about how they constructed it:

  1. What materials was this dress likely made of? Any similar materials that would achieve the same effect? I love how soft and ethereal it looks, can't tell if the effect was emphasized by the softness of the old camera quality
  2. What are the layers that this dress has — just a lining layer and the top layer? + the beaded lace around her waist?
  3. What's the technique for constructing the wrinkly pleats in the bodice and sleeves called, if I wanted to learn it?
  4. How did they attach the sparkly glittery bit on the top of her bust?

I'd assume this would be tough to recreate properly, so any ideas/patterns on sewing a simpler, similar dress if so? Thanks all!

Made the Bootstrap Fashion Dress Form: Meet Penelope!

After doing lots of research and seeing everyone else’s DIY dress forms and thinking to myself, “I don’t think I can execute that,” I finally made one!! I’ve been eyeing this pattern for about a year now and wanted to wait until my sewing skills were a bit better to attempt. I’m definitely just a hobby sewist and one that sews clothes for herself (so sometimes I do things like not match the thread color to the fabric cause I’m lazy, finishes aren’t too clean, etc.) but I told myself I wanted to make his project clean and more precise than I usually am, so I took my time with it.

Pattern: Bootstrap Fashion Female Half-Leg

Fabric: 2.5 yards duck cloth, 5 yards medium weight interfacing

Filling: used maybe a little over half of the poly-fil 5lb box

DIY stand: caster wheels with brakes, wood panel, pvc pipes, and flanges

Also, the pattern instructions said to use a zipper to connect the top of the dress form to the bottom of the dress form, but I used an *invisible* zipper! So safe to say I’m not longer scared of invisible zippers anymore hahaha

I don’t remember the website asking me for like thigh circumference or anything however.. I wish they did because the thighs are about 3 inches smaller than the circumference of my actual thighs but I still love how everything came out! By far the most challenging project I’ve done. I had to improvise some things as well. There were lots of seam ripping (because I would put right side and wrong side together multiple times and sewed it, and I also put the wrong patterns together so I ended up giving her a butt in the back and a butt in the front somehow lollll)

Everything costed me a total of ~$215 and ~22 hours to make. It was mostly expensive because of the DIY stand parts that I bought. I’m excited to learn how to drape now and start using her! I present to you, Penelope :)

Pants I put some paches on

The one on the knee and back cuff where to cover holes (last two pics have them circled)

I wanted to cover the holes in these pants I had (they are my favourite pants) so I just got some fabric a had in my closet and cut out a pice and pined it to the pants. Then I wanted to add more since I already put a patch on it. I didn’t use any pattern I just did it.

I tried to sew myself a wedding guest dress

Hey!

I just wanted to share this because this project took me on quite a lengthy journey :D

I needed a dress for a wedding and thought, 'How hard can it be? It can't be that hard! RIGHT?????'.

Boy, was I wrong.

I started with what felt like a simple plan: one pattern, about 3 metres of fabric, nothing too experimental. That lasted… maybe a day or two. Then I made a mock-up and immediately realised. A - the bodice fit was completely off (borderline suffocating), B - the waistline was somewhere near my chest!

So.

I went down the rabbit hole of trying to modify the pattern myself.

I spent days:

- resizing things

- adjusting the bodice

- trying to fix the chest area situation

- and repeatedly questioning what I was doing with my life

At one point, I was very close to setting the whole thing on fire.

BUT!

I pushed through.

And here is the final result.

I must say that after this experience, I have developed a deep and personal vendetta against bishop sleeves. More specifically… attaching cuffs to bishop sleeves! I still have nightmares about it.

p.sI also added the inspo dress from a Korean pattern book that I used for reference.

I also added the inspo dress from a Korean pattern book that I used for reference. I don’t have a proper full photo of the finished dress (these are screenshots from a video, sorry 😅), but it finishes just below the knee.

If anyone has tips for attaching cuffs to bishop sleeves without losing their sanity, I’m all ears. Please, and thank you! 🙃

Dress tiers draping weirdly using bedsheets

Hi, I’m a confident novice and I’ve been sewing for a few years now. I’ve just finished the Syd Dress by Sydney Graham, which I expected to be flowy with new bedsheets, but it looks more like a mermaid dress silhouette. It’s nice and loose on my waist, hips and thighs as intended, and there’s plenty of space to use the inseam pockets.

  1. Did I orient my fabric incorrectly? I didn’t check for the grainline since I wanted the coloured stripes to be vertical

  2. Is there a way to salvage this? I’d like to keep the 3 tiers if possible, but I’m nervous it will still drape weirdly if I remove the bottom tier

Thanks for your help!

Scraps Turned Into Nostalgia!

Hope this brings some nostalgia for older gen Z like it did for me!!! I want to get these guys on some banners hopefully 😭

IM BY NO MEANS A PRO AT THIS HAHA!! PLEASE BE KIND!!

I got some packs of scrap fabric from the thrift store last year and have been using them for a different project, but not all of them have been big enough.

I decided to sort through them again by color, trace some patterns using some water soluble stabilizer I had sitting around to use as a guide over some felt and then cut the pattern out from the print outs to use with my scraps!

Boxers (woven cotton)

Redesign of the pocket

This video came up in my feed, and I am intrigued. They have redesigned the basic pouch pocket to have sections, keeping your pocket contents neat and easier to find. The smaller pocket section keeps coins from falling out. I may have to try this soon.

I never sew this quickly but I had some fabric Lying around and this is what I made in an afternoon!

It is like a 3 quarter circle skirt that started as a piece of fabric that wasn’t enough for a full circle skirt so I made a 3 quarter circle skirt!!

From old curtains to new skirt

Cute skirt for spring.

Pattern: Julia Skirt by Maryel Studios (on etsy)

Fabric: thrifted cotton curtains

Modifications: added a lining, turned and stitched all the seams.

The pattern felt a bit "fast fashion" to me - it tells you to zig-zag/serge the edges of all the pieces before you start, on place of finishing the seams as you go. I've never seen that before and, as the inside of the skirt is likely to be seen because of the slits, I wanted to do a more high end finish.

Also, the pattern sizes are very big. I sized down, based on the measurements of a skirt I already own, and it's still a bit too big. Oh well. This project got me sewing again after a long break, and found a use for this fabric that I've had for years. So all good. I've got loads more fabric, so might try making some trousers or a matching blouse.

Is removing the bust darts a good idea?

This dress is too tight in the bust, it's somewhat constricting my breath. What's the best way of adding space in the boob? There is one long dart on each side of the bust, should I unpick them?

I know side panels are often added under the arms of a dress that's too tight, however everything I have read has suggested this would be tricky with the tshirt sleeves on this dress.

Any insight appreciated. The dress is from Japan, it's perfectly proportioned everywhere else.

My Second Project Ever! A tissue holder pattern from Charlotte Kan

The tissues are very snug in there but I suppose that’s better than them falling out. I followed Charlotte’s tutorial on YouTube: https://youtu.be/mHTRv74dSFA?si=C8jLzFBEh4ZoO1EP very good video. As a beginner there are some mistakes on my project (mainly I can’t sew or cut straight) but overall I’m pleased with it, it’s very cute and it’s useable!

Has anyone ever seen similar prints on denim?

I was thinking I would love to sew this into some jeans. The picture looks like cotton but I can swear I’ve seen similar prints on jeans.

Anyone have a clue where I can find it?

Issue with front of pants

Hi everyone!

- This was made with the Darcy Pants sewing pattern. Altered to have that super small box pleat in the front.

I always have this issue when constructing pants with zipper fly’s.

As you can see, all the front looks like it’s pulling a lot everywere, but it actually fits my body very well without feeling tight at all. You can see my skin not being squished by the trousers.

If I let these pants out even by a centimeter, they will start falling down. They feel amazing right now, but the fly opening looking like it’s pulling out freaks me out.

I dont have this issue with pants that have a side invisible zipper. Maybe it’s something about the technique I’m using to install the zipper fly. I’m using the instructions shown by Dressmaking Amore for the Darcy pants.

If you have any suggestions, let me know! I might just avoid zipper flys for now 😅

Ps.: I know two of the belt straps are shorter than they should be and they are pulling down on the waistband. That’s another issue of mine haha. But identified for next projects.

How should I mend these holes?

I have no idea how my husband did this, but he’s gotten some strange tears in his shirt. Im not sure how to best mend the tears, as they lay on both sides of the shoulder seam. Can anyone give me some guidance? This is part of his renaissance faire costume so the fix doesn’t have to be neat; in fact it might be look more authentic if it’s roughly hewn.

Thanks so much in advance!
