I tried to sew myself a wedding guest dress

Hey loveys ☘️

I just wanted to drop by and show you my latest dress! I’m honestly mad chuffed with this one.

It has very autumn energy, even though it’s spring. I think I’m just mentally living a few months ahead at all times, haha.

I have two weddings coming up and realised I didn’t own anything that felt wedding-appropriate and also like me, so I decided to make something myself. Something I could wear not just for one day, but all year round. Layered with sweaters, little vests, and warm socks when the weather turns again.

I’ve already worn it out in the garden, just pottering around and visiting my hens, which feels like the best possible test for a dress like this :)

I’ll admit… it wasn’t the easiest make. I used a pattern from a Korean book and had to adjust it quite a bit to fit me properly, which took some patience.

And the sleeves…

Don’t let me start on the sleeves.

They tested me.

They’re big and soft and floaty (exactly what I wanted), but attaching them to the cuffs took me far longer than I care to admit.

But in the end, everything came together.

P.S

I also added the inspo dress from a Korean pattern book that I used for reference.

I don’t have a proper full photo of the finished dress (these are screenshots from a video, sorry 😅), but it finishes just around the knee.

I tried to sew myself a wedding guest dress

Hey!

I just wanted to share this because this project took me on quite a lengthy journey :D

I needed a dress for a wedding and thought, 'How hard can it be? It can't be that hard! RIGHT?????'.

Boy, was I wrong.

I started with what felt like a simple plan: one pattern, about 3 metres of fabric, nothing too experimental. That lasted… maybe a day or two. Then I made a mock-up and immediately realised. A - the bodice fit was completely off (borderline suffocating), B - the waistline was somewhere near my chest!

So.

I went down the rabbit hole of trying to modify the pattern myself.

I spent days:

- resizing things

- adjusting the bodice

- trying to fix the chest area situation

- and repeatedly questioning what I was doing with my life

At one point, I was very close to setting the whole thing on fire.

BUT!

I pushed through.

And here is the final result.

I must say that after this experience, I have developed a deep and personal vendetta against bishop sleeves. More specifically… attaching cuffs to bishop sleeves! I still have nightmares about it.

p.sI also added the inspo dress from a Korean pattern book that I used for reference.

If anyone has tips for attaching cuffs to bishop sleeves without losing their sanity, I’m all ears. Please, and thank you! 🙃
