Ellison Institute of Technology

The whole thing looks disingenuous to me. I have concerns about the genuineness of the scholarship program itself but that’s not my main issue here-their sketchy Trump loving billionaire CEO for one, but some are saying he pulled out. Does anyone know what is really happening? He’ll still benefit anyway. Why are we letting American oligarchs establish a presence here and risk foreign interference? In not only the city but potentially the university too. I know they aren’t PART of the university but it’s worrying how much they’re trying to create ties with it. I don’t like how they claim to be revolutionary or investing into the education here when they’re just another pathetic AI promoting group using students they decide will help contribute most towards their aim to achieve it. They don’t seem to contribute to British interests at all let alone the city. Even their scholarships fund already very wealthy kids (of the undergraduates only two are British) who clearly wouldn’t have got their scholarships if not for elite opportunities available to them. So what’s the point of a so called “merit based” scholarship that is basically only open to those kids who will always have great options with basically no account for kids who did not have these opportunities available. They want kids who co author research and publish in journals and kids who win olympiads with acronyms no one outside of the top 1% with crazy pushy parents would have ever heard of in their life. Scholarships for wealthy kids! What I like about UK scholarships is that they actually try to make their criteria just if it’s merit based. Anyway I did say my main issue wasn’t the fund but their funding clearly has strings attached which is basically to further their self interested goal and these poor kids are used as their pawns. How their construction plans were approved I’ll never know. We need to start questioning the motives of these big money companies before allowing them to have such a big influence in our country

More Police facial recognition surveillance in the city centre

Oxford Mail

Anyone for a show of disapproval and defiance by collectively turning up in masks; perhaps of whichever official is responsible for instigating this..?

What’s wrong with the buses?

I take the bus daily in Oxford. I’ve lived in several cities, in different countries. I love Oxford, but I do feel like (comparatively to what I’ve experienced before) its buses are the worst. (This post is a rant)

  1. the fact that we have different bus companies and that depending on the pass/ticket you go for you will not be able to get on some buses. What do you mean I have to buy another ticket??

  2. the fact that buses will stop. And wait. And wait. This one drives me crazy, it’s like I’m taken hostage. Let’s drive, I have a life to live! Every minute counts.

  3. the people who stop the whole bus when they buy their ticket because… I don’t know why actually. Probably because of fact 1 above, they’re just trying to figure out what to buy and the driver is equally confused so they have to talk it through. Once again, I feel like taken hostage. And we wait. And we wait.

  4. buses that just… don’t show up. They are announced on the app (rather, the apps! since there’s more than one company), in 3, 2, 1, now!… now? You look again at the app and it’s gone, but it never materialised

Was it always like that? Can we not rebel? Shall we start a movement?

(This was posted from a bus that is taking me hostage)

Anyone able to help with an injured bird

Hi all,
Ive come across an injured pigeon in town that looks like it will need medical assistance, I’ve called Oxfordshire wildlife rescue however they are unable to spare any volunteers to come and pick him up and I am unable to drive and don’t have my bike on me so can’t transport it anywhere.

Any advice or support would be very appreciated!

weeks in June not to visit Oxford and Cambridge

I'll be visiting the UK with my family in late June 2027. Are there times we should avoid Oxford and Cambridge (because of exams, graduation ceremonies or other end-of-term events)?

Sliced Deli Meats in Oxford

Hi Oxford friends,

An esoteric question:

Can anyone tell me where to get good sliced meats in Oxford for making sandwiches? I am American and we can get good sliced turkey, roast beef, etc easily. Is this a thing in the UK? I saw there are a couple of Italian delis on Google Maps but who knows what they may have there. Do supermarkets have things like this, too?

Thanks in advance.

Let me start by saying I don’t live in Oxford but the pcn charge matches the date I had to visit Oxford for work.

I received 3 letters, I was there for work for 3 days. Never received the initial letter, straight got the second warning letter with total fees of over £300 and I’m not paying for something I wasn’t even aware of. Contacted Oxford council disputing it and months later this is what I get through email. If anyone who lives in Oxford advice please? I don’t have £300 just to throw around. Is this a legit email?

I’ve been doing smash burgers as a side hustle for over a year and I still am. It’s called Jae’s burgers and I go to pubs, mainly The bird in Hand in Princes Risborough (so not quite Oxford). I’ve been at The Star Pub, James St Tavern and The Sun in Wheatley. I’d like to share my creations with you and just to see on the off chance if anyone here has actually tried one of my burgers, I’d love to hear some feedback 🙏🏾

Places to eat in town on a budget.

I’m coming to Oxford for 2 nights this week, as a birthday treat. I’m staying in the Malmaison, but we are on a bit of a budget this time. Last time we came we ate at Gusto and the Malmaison restaurant but we ended up spending a lot of money, and this time we need to budget.

Can anyone recommend some places for a couple to eat dinner or lunch in the town?

I know it’s a bit of a broad question, but any ideas help. Thank you!

For those voting, First off, well done for exercising your right to vote.

Secondly, a reminder of one of your rights that is sometimes blurred at the polling station:

The person/people outside the Polling station asking to see your details is a party rep not anyone you are forced to engage with. You are allowed to vote without giving them any info if you wish (A pleasant "no thank you" is all you need). Although you are absolutely allowed to give them information if you want. I just want you to know your rights, as this was something I didn't know when I was a younger voter.

They are legally allowed and even encouraged to be at the polling station as they are there to oversee the elections, but they do not have an inherent right to know about you. They are just asking. It's a choice that can sometimes look more like a necessity. They collect data for their party (there is an explanation below).

HOWEVER, I'm not telling you to avoid or not avoid them, that is your choice, I just want you to know because I don't think it's obvious to all.

As u/Acient_Tomato9592 has rightly pointed out and as I want to be transparent:

>All they are doing is compiling a list of who has voted, so that in the evening they can knock on the doors of people who haven't.

>The list of who has voted is provided to parties after the election
