I analyzed every SSA baby name since 1880. Here are the names that got destroyed by pop culture.

I've been going through the full SSA dataset (every baby name registered in the US since 1880) and some of the pop culture effects are insane:

  • Karen peaked at #3 in 1965. It's now #831 and still falling.
  • Alexa was steadily climbing until 2015 when Amazon launched the Echo. It's dropped every year since.
  • Isis was in the top 500 as recently as 2005. Completely gone by 2015.
  • Katrina dropped 70% in one year after Hurricane Katrina.
  • Khaleesi appeared in 2011 (Game of Thrones S1), peaked in 2018 with 560 babies, then dropped 68% after the finale.

The craziest one I found: Deneen. 22 babies in 1963. Then 1,604 in 1964 — a single-year 70x spike. Then back to 421 the next year. Still trying to figure out what caused it.

I built a tool to explore the full dataset if anyone wants to look up names: https://babynames.market/explore

What are the most common names for young kids where you live?

What names are you constantly seeing/hearing where you live? Some of the really popular names near me are: Ivy, Harper, Henry, William, Olivia, and Noah (for boys and girls) and lots of Oaklynn/Oakley names. I live in the Midwestern US.

Giving child the same name as a celebrity

One of my top baby name choices for our hypothetical future child would result in the child having the same name as a celebrity. We are based in the UK and have a pretty common surname. I've made a list of celebrities with common names - which of these do you think you could name a child without it being a problem? My baby name choice is included here. Thanks!

Chinese food themed pet names?

Hello!

I currently own a dog named bao (originally named baobao after the giant panda), which means bao buns lol. I want to get a new puppy soon, but I want to follow the theme of chinese foods (we're Chinese!). i think it'd be too much to ask for one that doubles as a food name and a panda name because of how unusual that was. I'd be down for just the food name since well, we always call him bao anyway. I do want the name to be chinese food spelling? like not potstickers but jiaozi ahahaha i don't know if i'm explaining myself, but just like how it's bao and not buns.

Some ideas I had: Panpan (giant panda), boba (the tea), cha (tea in chinese), fun ( a type of rice noodle sha hao fun), lychee (the fruit!), tofu

thank u all for ur help <33

Cant agree on a name

My boyfriend and I cannot agree on a name for our second child, a baby boy.

We are currently having relationship issues and cant have a conversation without arguing. He wants to name him Leonidas because he has always liked it. He shot down all the names I liked (Nolan, Finn, Oliver) saying they were p*ssy names, not strong enough. I have tried multiple times to express that I dont fully agree with Leonidas as his name but it always ends up with him shooting down my names and saying how he has always wanted to name his son Leonidas (mostly cuz it sounds cool).

I feel pressured to name my son something I dont want to name him. I tried to talk about compromising with Leon but my bf wants to argue that Leon will be his name, that Leonidas is just his full name. But i feel its giving percy jackson character rather than real baby boy.

I like Leon but after all our issues and him being mean about it I dont feel good about the name. After much thought I think I like the name Bastian. Bastian Leonidas. I feel ok with Leonidas as the middle name and think thats a fair compromise.

At this point I dont know if i can even forgive him for things said or how he has treated me this pregnancy. Am i overreacting? Is Leonidas an acceptable name? Should I fight to name him Bastian (or something different)?

Meaningless letters in names

TIL that the J. R. in J. R. („Johnny“) Cash‘s first name isn’t short for anything. His first name is literally just „J. R.“.

Another famous example for this is Harry S. Truman.

I was wondering if there’s any other prominent cases for this phenomenon?

Baby girl names Due in June

My husband and I are struggling to name our second baby girl! We found a name for our first baby that we were in LOVE with but we haven't felt the same about any other names yet. and we think we may never feel that 😭 so we're trying to pick our favorite, but still have a long list and lots of unknown possibilities. Our first daughter's name starts with an M so I'm not sure we want to go with M for second baby or not... having a hard time here if you can't tell lol. It feels like we've heard all the names in the world. So now I'm at a loss what if I decide I don't want any of these names? My husband says he wouldn't be sad if we used any of these names.

First names we like -

Mallory

Phoebe

Elara (AI suggested so I am not a fan, husband is a fan of AI lol)

Remi

Sylvie (searching past posts everyone on reddit loves Sylvie and it's an old lady/boomer name in France, I am in the US)

Finley (husband likes, I think this sounds like a boy name)

Sloan

Maisie

Marley

Moira

Maryam (I like this but husband doesn't)

first names we can't use but like -

Hazel

Olive

Lena (I love pronounced Lay-nah but everyone In the US will say Lee-nah, I'm told)

Stella (too popular)

Middle names -

Mary (my grandmother's names)

Lee (my Middle name)

Genevieve (husband great grandmother name)

Elizabeth (husband great grandma name)

open to any middle name ideas at this point...

pls help

Alternative name for Violetta

So long story short, I’m writing a novel where I originally named my main character Violetta, which I think fits her really well. But I just realized my aunt’s name is Viola, and I don’t want it to seem like the character is named after her. So now I’m looking for a new name with a similar vibe.

The only other names I’ve considered so far are Juliet/Julietta and Ophelia, but I’ll probably use Ophelia for a different character. I’d also prefer to avoid names starting with J, since it’s pronounced differently in a lot of languages.

I’d also prefer names that don’t end in “e”.

Any suggestions?

Vesna, would it seem like a weird name to other people?

I am having a daughter. Our other daughter is named Veronika.

We have already chosen a middle name, she will have one, and it is Iwona. For her first name, I originally liked Nadezhda, but when I told my husband, he did not, so there needs to be other ideas. He liked the name Vesna then.

It means spring. I like the symbolism of that. But while Veronika, although spelt differently, is not uncommon where we are now living, I have not heard of anyone use Vesna.

I live in Canada at the moment. I am not worried about it not being very common, but I do not want it to seem like she has a weird name that could be made fun of easily for being different.

4th Girl name struggle

My husband and I are having a 4th girl and are struggling with her name. The first three we both agreed quickly on and love the names. This time - we are struggling…. We both like biblical, or bible adjacent names, or virtue names. We usually use family names for middle names so we will figure that out once we agree on a first name.

Our current girls are Hope, Zoe, and Eden.

Names taken by close friends/family: Grace, Ruth, Mary, Naomi, Elizabeth.

Baby boy name help needed!

Okay everyone. We are truly stuck. Our daughter is Claire, and we loved that name. My name list and dad’s are not overlapping, so without telling you our preferences, can you give us some names that fill one of these criteria:

classic without being trendy; soft/melodic; nature inspired; just super cool; go well with Claire.

Thank you!!! Baby boy is due in July.

The name Idris?

Hello

We are a Muslim family from Germany and are expecting a son. What do you guys think of the name Idris (the second i being long, Idrees)?

He will have a German last name and we dont want his first name to sound like Ali or Mohammad (an obvious Muslim name) and want the name to be easy pronounced.

What do you think about this name? Do you have others in mind that could be good as well?

Thank you!

How do you pronounce Emmeline when you see it?

I’m curious how others initially pronounce this name. Maybe add the general area that you’re from if that’s something you’re comfortable with.

can’t decide on name order pls help

so my(M24) gf (26) is expecting our first kid! we’re both partially french west indian and are trying to decide on the possible girl name. If it’s a boy we both like Louis Alassane but for a girl we like the names Léonie and Joséphine since they both show up in our families.

I prefer Léonie Josephine but she pushes back because, should we have another kid and it be a boy there would be the matching ‘L’ which she’s not a fan of. So she prefers Joséphine Léonie. We also live in the anglosphere so I feel Léonie feels more modern than Joséphine as a first name.

There’s also the added issue of throwing Marie in the mix as it is cultural tradition to honour Mary, but still unsure if it sounds too ancient to include at this point. We can’t agree on that either as I would prefer to lead with Marie-Léonie while she would ideally prefer Joséphine Marie-Léonie. You can tell we have our favourite prénoms, but which one do you think

Thoughts on combining 2 names together to honor 2 people?

So, we are having our second and final child. Our first like most in both of our families has an honor middle name, hers is from from my husband's mother. My grandmother recently passed and I would love to use both her and my mother's names for this babie's middle! I'm not sure if it's a real name but it sounds very similar to many established names. My question is does this name sound dumb and would you combine it another way? Or nix it and pick another entirely.

The names are Ann and Doris, and I would love to use the middle name "Andora" with a simple 2 syllable first name (think "Sophie"). Thoughts?

Also - they had the same middle name which has been used many times already by my siblings.
