URGENT Help, I just found this little (baby?) Mouse

I just found this mouse and need help with what to do.

They seem distressed and when I found them they were just sitting in the open in front of my school. Are they a pet or wild? Are they a baby? What do they need?

Help is urgent as it's already 4pm (found them 30mins ago) and tomorrow is a holiday so nothing is open we're I live (Germany).

Hiya, so I found this mouse on the road. I put it in a paper bag, and there was a little blood in the bag, so I'm making the assumption it was caught by a cat. I know the chances are slim of it surviving, so right now I have 3 options:
Humanely euthanise (what is the best way for going about this?)
Keep safe until death
Keep and try to save it
I'm in NZ and vets won't treat an invasive species like this-I also do not want to release an invasive species, so that's not an option.

Also-my cat is currently on antibiotics. Could I give the mouse a tiny drop of that to ward off any possible infections from the cat bite? Thanks
The fishtank is where I'm keeping it right now. I know it's not ideal, but it's all I've got.

Any tips on caring for my single male mouse?

As most people know, male mice should live alone, but at times I get really worried that he might be lonely..

I know the care basics and I’ve had him for 2 months by now

His cage is 120 cm long and 40 cm wide, he has a bunch of clutter in his cage and I let him out to play for 5 hours a day. But I’m still so worried that he might get depressed.

Can anyone give me tips or reassure me that my mouse will be okay?

Male Mouse + ASF Rats?

I have a lone male mouse (Nugget) in a 32x16x16 enclosure. I initially got his brother too, but the brother bullied Nugget so much that they had to be separated. Checked with my vet, neutering him is not a safe option so I can’t house him with female fancy mice.

After some light research I discovered African Soft Fur Rats- supposedly you can house female ASFs with a male to prevent loneliness. I checked in again with my vet, she had never heard of it but said I could try. I don’t know anyone else who has kept mice, so I figured I’d ask here. Thoughts? Just want to give my little guy a happy life while he’s here.

Found some mice poop in my kitchen drawer yesterday, although it has been there for about 1 month+. I cleaned it with soap and water but am now concerned about hantavirus. I’m pretty sure it was just a simple house mouse, which is still not completely safe, but I’m very anxious. Any help?

Hello all! I hope it's okay that I post here. I don't have mice myself, but I used to have rats! I am writing a short story for class based around this photo ("Subway Squabble" taken by Sam Rowley) and need some insight around mouse behaviour.

Specifically... with rats, when they are on the defense, they get on their tippy toes and try to look really big and scary, and if that doesn't work, they throw their butt around! I have seen this from time to time when my own rats were trying to get at something tasty like an egg or if i introduced someone new to the mischief. Is this something mice do, too? How do they behave when they're on the defense?

In my story, these mice are going to be fighting over a piece of food, so I am trying to capture them as best I can.

Thank you in advance! Mice are precious and I love them 🥹

Girl or boy fancy mouse?

Are we sure this is a girl fancy mouse?

Last post I had 1 really lovely person confirm this was a girl. But this morning, this little guy got on top of another one of our mice, in a very *interesting* manor. We are new owners- so still kinda unsure about this all but really wanting to give the mice the best lives possible.

If this mouse in the image is a girl- is that ‘hopping on top’ of the other normal?
And say this little mouse is a guy- what should we do?

Thanks guys. Really appreciate help of any kind.

Hi, really freaking out here. I live in Ontario and caught two of these mice in my basement. I know it's hard to tell from the photo but is this a Deer mouse? I'm really scared about getting hantavirus now.

I need help with what to do with these baby mice and their mom! I was taking out the trash at work and found a fully grown mouse trapped in one of the trash cans. When I went to get her out and relocate her a realized she had babies in there with her. Now I’m worried about relocating her with the babies since I don’t know if she will continue to take care of them. Should I keep her contained and take care of them until the babies are old enough to be released with her? Will she even take care of them now that I’ve disturbed them?

We will probably be getting a lot of traffic owing to recent coverage of the Hantavirus cruise. I'm here to clear things up before people start spreading misinformation.

TL;DR:

You're not at threat. Hantavirus rare in rodents. Don't vacuum mouse poop. Wear gloves and wash up if at home. Wear respirator if cleaning rodent infested buildings. Scroll to bottom for CDC picture guide.

What is Hantavirus/HPS?

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that are carried by certain rodents. They've been around for a long time, but have recently been a topic of news coverage owing to certain outbreaks/talks of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome(HPS).

HPS is a respiratory disease(having to do with lungs/breathing) that results from coming into contact with infected rodents, most often via waste or saliva. It usually doesn't spread person-to-person, but certain hantaviruses such as the Andes virus(a type of hantavirus from South America) have resulted in previous outbreaks of such.

The now famous Hantavirus cruise is believed to have been caused by the Andes virus:

>Dr Charlotte Hammer, an assistant professor and infectious disease epidemiologist at Cambridge University, said: “In the current case we are most likely talking about Andes virus, which is a New World hantavirus." - The Times^(3)

If you live outside of South America, your chances of coming into contact with the Andes strain are practically zero. You won't be getting HPS from interacting with other people.

This doesn't mean you're safe from all hantaviruses though, as they are spread almost globally.

Avoiding Hantavirus/HPS

The good thing is, avoiding hantaviruses is surprisingly easy.

If you live in the UK or the US, your chances of encountering a rodent with hantavirus are incredibly low, and even then, contracting hantavirus disease from a mouse is even lower.

In the US, about 38.5 million people each year are impacted by rodent problems^(5). Compare that to the ~29 reported cases of hantavirus disease yearly^(6).

That's 1 in 1,327,586.

Most hantavirus cases occur in the rural or wilderness southwest, often resulting from cleaning old outdoor buildings like barns, cabins, or sheds, without proper safety equipment.

Hantaviruses can be spread if rodent waste is aerosolized(turned into small particles). This can happen from sweeping or vacuuming. Don't vacuum rodent waste. That goes for any animal waste really.

So unless you're going around vacuuming rodent infested buildings with no respirator on, you're not going to get hantavirus.

Why is Everyone so Afraid?

Look, we've already dealt with one pandemic, the thought of another is scary. But it's mostly just sensationalized media. With proper safety procedures, you won't be getting infected. Whenever you hear of something like this in the future, whether it's a new virus at home or a million miles away, always make sure to check sources and read. And don't be coerced into panic by the news, that's one of their tricks to keep you coming back.

At the bottom of this article, I've attached the CDC Hantavirus Prevention Guidelines(US), guidance from the UK Health Security Agency on Reducing the risk of human infection from pet rodents, and a summary of hantavirus also by the UK Health Security Agency.

  1. CDC Recommendations
  • The CDC Recommends using "Snap traps," which kill rodents. However, unless you are immunocompromised, using a live trap is perfectly safe so long as you follow the proper sanitary protocols. Wear gloves and sanitize everything.

I adopted 8 fancy female mice that the pet store I go to thought would sell and didn’t so I bought all of them and a few were pregnant. I got them about a week ago and she just had her baby’s. I have them in a 40 gallon breeder tanks with about 8 inches of bedding. Well a couple day into me owning my new mice one just dropped dead and had no signs of injury so I went to make sure no more had passed so while doing that I uncover the nest of the newborns and I FEEL LIKE SHIT ! I have never owned mice and know that handling the pups aren’t as bad as they say but I didn’t knock the bedding around the they were laying on the glass floor so I scooped them up and put the bedding under them. Did I ruin the mother bond ?
