Taken off Revenue by employer

Hello,

I’ve been employed as a carer in a private care home since 2022.

I went on illness benefit June 2024, seeing as I was pregnant and it was becoming difficult to complete the tasks assigned to me. I then went on 26 weeks of Maternity and then nine weeks of Parents Leave. Following Parents Leave I had to go back on Illness Benefit which I have been on since July 2025.

I recently accessed my Employment Detail Summary on the Revenue webpage. According to revenue, I left as of 30/10/2025.

I contacted Citizens Information and I was told they weren’t able to let me go and that would be a considered an unfair dismissal.

I contacted the care home telling them I wanted to return by email. I outlined my leave details and the discovery of my departure date on my revenue account. The response was quick and I was told I can return and to ignore revenue details.

My question is why would they have notified Revenue of my departure? If I was to return, could they change the departure date or is that date final and I would need to go through the re hiring process again with revenue?

Thank you.

Do neighbours need permission to change our shared roof?

Our neighbours are planning an extension that requires changing our shared hip roof to a gable on their side, and then they'd need to flash the roof on our side as part of that work.

Outside of needing planning permission, do they also need permission from us because it sounds like our roof counts as a party structure?

Wills and grantee

About 7 yrs ago a man I cared for in my job over a few yrs passed away. Afterwards my boss at the time queried what I had received from the will as they said had seen it and I was noted in it I was clueless and had heard nothing.

Due to this man being very wealthy I was aware that the main receivers of his estate were in dispute and thought nothing more of it. In the following months I moved address and changed jobs and never thought of it afterwards.

On a notion I just looked it up and seen the will was probated 2 yrs ago with a local accountant the grantee.

Is it possible I was in the will but they may of been unable to contact me ? I'm aware they would be obliged to try but would it be common for them not to be able locate people who may have moved as I said I'm not even sure I'm in this will so feel it might be foolish contacting the accountant now I'm clueless with legal matters advice appreciated.

How to apply for a will

My oldest boys father was such a lovely man, then he got cancer and upped and left the country! So I got on with things and then he returned a while later and was paying maintenance and then he died and that was that.

I asked before he died would there be provision made for his son, if not then but for when he turned 18 and was told I was a terrible person asking this of a dieing man. At that stage I was only thinking of my son and the future. He hinted during a mediation that the will was written with his son in mind and would come into play when he turns 18, he had assets, land, horses, cars, and a good salary.

He died when the child was 4 and I have heard nothing more from the family, friends of his, the estate, nothing.

I enquired with 2 of his brothers when the child was about 8 if there was any provision made for the child and they told me that they wouldn't know anything about that. I was struggling at the time and his friend group had just set up a go fund me page for a friend who had just had triplets, meanwhile I was working my arse off and paying everything myself with not a cent from anyone.

Now the child is 19, we live in a different country and all is good. Neither him or myself have heard anything from anyone since he turned 18, so I'm wondering how I could get a copy of the will? As I said we don't live in Ireland anymore so is there somewhere online I or he could apply for it?

Edit: after searching if probate was granted it seems it wasn't so what happens in that case? Did the family not submit the will?

Is it legal to work over 45h between two jobs

I was in the conception that if you have two jobs you can’t work over 45h between both.

But talking with someone the other day they were saying that was not the case and the 45h apply only for each job.

What are the regulations on this?

TIA

Neighbours keep taking photos in my bedroom window and standing outside staring in/flipping me off

Guards say that they can’t do anything about it because they’re not standing on our property when they do it and to just ignore them but it’s getting very annoying. Semi-detached house, theirs is onto ours, they’re constantly trying to piss us off for seemingly no reason. Blasting music, shouting, and my main issue which is in the title.

It’s been about 4 years now, trying to move away but in the meantime any advice?

Bad reference

I'm looking for advice in terms of what I can do following and bad reference that was just false information by my current employer. I was approached to go for an interview for a company for EHS role (environmental health and safety) within a construction company.

The interview initial teams and in person interviews went well and I was offered the position. The company however requested that they talk to my current employer as they have a long standing working relationship.

I hadn't included him as a reference as I've been in the job only 4 months and have only seen my employer twice in person while in this role, this includes the interview. I work as a health and safety trainer on a part time basis for him. Initially told I'd have 3-4 days a week of work but never got more than 2 really.

While doing the interview for the new role I was asked if my current boss and I had any issues. I said no, and to the best of my knowledge the only things he might have had any issue with would be a sick day, I had a vomiting bug and 1 morning I had car troubles and wasn't sure if I would make my training session. I did get the car going in the end but was 30mins late, this one I knew he wasn't happy about but what can you do.

I had been clear in the interview about these and they said that's fine. I was offered the job but they wanted to talk to my current employer I said fine but I'd like to talk to him first out of courtesy. I rang him and told him about the job and who it was with. All was good and he wished me the best.

Also to make sure everyone was happy I had agreed with the new employer that I'd do a day or per week in the training job just to make sure everyone was kept sweet. This was all communicated to my training boss.

I was asked to start Monday but I said I still had dates for training scheduled this week and didn't want to leave him in the lurch. I worked in my training job on Monday in our centre and got my well wishes from the office staff all was good.

Tuesday morning I got a call from the recruitment agency that set up the new job telling me the offer was pulled off the back of the reference the training boss had provided. He basically told them I was

  1. "unreliable" the sick day was an issue,

  2. the car trouble was lies on my behalf,

  3. apparently I was turning up to jobs 20+ minutes late, 4) training was being carried out to a low standard.

I sent him an email about this asking why he didn't bring any of this up with me if I was so bad. He said "we don't give "negative feedback" yes he does. As for the issues he told the new job, apart from the sick day and car trouble (which I had already brought up) it's all lies. I was always 10-15 minutes early to ensure I'd be set up and 30min early for one job at he's request, I would meet managers before and after the training to see if there was anything they wanted me to focus on and tell them how it went. All feedback forms were glowing reviews with no issues and no concerns were ever brought up. As for the standard of training I reached out to the companies that certified me ran them through what I do and they said that's all perfect. I even shadowed one of his trainers for a few weeks and he had previously revived me saying I'm good. I've been doing this for 10yrs. Also on the time I was sick that trainer was also out with the same bug I was meant to be shadowing him that day.

I have no idea why he decided to do this the only suspicion I have is that I had gotten some recertification through him and he must have taken offence to me leaving. He has done me out of a €50k job for no reason.

The job was never perfect I had a few issues with it.

  1. if I was shadowing my wages would go down to minimum wage and back up to my €18 and hour when I carried out training and back down again when I was getting rectified

  2. was promised 3-4 days a week but only got 1-2 and was told they were quiet. Sometimes I don't work for a week or more. But in the email he said he was withhold day as a result of my bad performance that I was never told about

I've been told the WRC might look at some of this but I should mainly go down a defamation route. If anyone can give me advice on how best to proceed or what I should be doing would be very much appreciated

What to expect from an IR case at the WRC

Will keep this brief to avoid giving too much detail on an upcoming case but wondering if someone can give me some insight into what to expect.

Short story: took job at American company based in Dublin.

First 2 months given positive feedback, month 3 person returns from mat leave and I get moved to “buddy” up with her to finish ramp.

She immediately takes a dislike to me and tells my manager I’m not up to “company standard” and throws me under the bus for her mistakes.

Month 3 manager tells me I’m now “behind” but (in writing) tells me it’s her fault because she had me ramp with someone from the wrong department.

Week later I change manager.

Said co workers continues to spread lies about me to new manger, I documented it and caught her lying so made a formal complaint. Manager claimed it was my fault then a week later terminated my contract.

HR denied I ever made a complaint, then after showing screenshots of complaint claimed it wasn’t a complaint, then I showed them emails recapping a meeting where I named the person and showed evidence to my manager who relied and did not dispute it.

Then they still claimed it wasn’t a bullying complaint but also did a full bullying investigation (without interviewing me) and cleared everyone of any wrong doing.

They insisted my termination was due to multiple performance warning.

I did a DSAR and they could not

Produce any documents with negative performance warnings but the investigation did have a document from the employee admitted she had lied about things to my manager, and my manager admitting she might not have realised I was making a bullying complaint.

I was told that unfair dismissed doesn’t apply but IR could as they failed on the processes and never investigated a bullying complaint, then denied it happened.

I also used ethic point and they said they won’t investigate as the company claim no complaint exists.

The WRC wrote to company and company replied to say X person would be lead council.

The replied 20 days later to say the company had failed to respond and had not opted out of it (which they were entitled to do) so the case would now proceed.

It’s been about 4 months and no updated.

Wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect, I know it’s non binding

Torn bicep injury claim

Hi folks,

Tore my bicep off at the elbow 2 years ago in a workplace accident. Following orders from senior management, health and saftey was none existent in the place. Manual handling was done to a UK standard not to an irish one. Left the business last year, been pursuing legal action against them since. Its currently with the irb board.

My questions are:

Roughly how long does a claim take to be fully delt with??

How much compensation should I expect? Ive permanent damage to my arm, loss of movement and strength and a 3 inch scar.

Any info anyone can give me on this would be appreciated

On stamp 4, am I allowed to work for companies outside ireland as a remote employee? How do I stay compliant ?

I’m on stamp 4, and due to how bad the job market is I’m wondering if anyone knows if I’m allowed to work for employers outside ireland that might not be registered here?

My stamp 4 will be renewable again in 2028, and I don’t want there to be issues when I renew and when it’s time to apply for citizenship. What’s the best way to handle this?

Honestly, is it normal to be "too productive" for a redundancy selection? Need some Irish WRC advice.

I’m in a bit of a weird spot with a redundancy process here in Ireland and I’m wondering if I’m losing my mind or if this is as dodgy as it feels.

I’ve been with my company for 18 months. Recently, they started a project scale down and used a "scoring matrix" based on quality and errors to pick who stays. Here’s the kicker: I’m the top producer on the team and have the 2nd highest quality score, with only a 1.1% error rate.

The company is letting me go, but they’re keeping new starters who have been here for only 2 months and have a "100% quality record." The reason their quality is 100%? They haven't actually processed any work yet.

The HR lead basically admitted to me that they only looked at the total number of mistakes, not the volume of work. So, because I did 1,000+ tickets and naturally had a few tiny errors, I’m being sacked. Meanwhile, people who have done zero work are being kept because their stats look "perfect" on paper.

It honestly feels like a massive logic gap or worse, a deliberate trick to get rid of senior staff and keep the cheaper new hires. To make it weirder, I work completely independently, while most of the people staying are still trainees who need their work approved by someone like me.

During our call, HR even admitted they hadn't actually verified the raw data and just took a summary from the managers at face value. They’ve offered me an extra 4 weeks' pay if I sign a waiver and agree not to sue, but I’ve told them no. It feels like a bit of an insult when the whole process is so blatantly biased.

Has anyone here dealt with the WRC for "unfair selection"? Does the "Impersonality Test" for redundancy actually mean anything if they can just use skewed numbers like this? I’m definitely filing a Subject Access Request (SAR) to see the internal emails about how they scored me, but is it worth fighting this further?

Would love to hear if anyone has seen this kind of stuff in the tech/outsourcing sector here. Do companies usually get away with this kind of math?

Cheers.

Issue with mechanic

Hi there,

Looking for some advice please.

We dropped our car to a mechanic last Friday, having confirmed with them that they could change a part related to the clutch area, which we provided. Another mechanic had started the work but was unable to finish as shut down by the council (very dodgy I know).

This new garage we went to had previously done work for me a few years ago, on a different vehicle, no issue.

We were told the work would be quick, as it was a small job. We tried to speak to the manager when we dropped it there on Friday, but only the receptionist was available.

We called on Monday to get an idea of where it was at- we were not given any info, just told "it's ok the queue".

Today we get a call and are told the work comes to 1200. We are shocked. We honestly expected 200e. We asked what had been done, as we had not authorised anything outside of the part being changed. We get a call back and we were told the whole clutch was changed, which we had not requested and had been assured was not needed, by a different mechanic.

I just looked up Google reviews, and it seems this garage are well versed in this- so many reviews say they overcharge, do unauthorised work and basically hold your car ransom. Many people have said they needed to get more work done afterwards. I feel like an idiot for not checking beforehand, but they had done a good job a few years ago.

Anyways, now we are wondering what to do. We do not want to pay 1200, and are furious they didn't check with us first. We never authorised any of this. Had they said it needed a new clutch we would have gone somewhere else, as it didn't make sense.

Have we a leg to stand on?

We are thinking of going out to them to see a detailed invoice, and offering maybe 300e cash. Can they call the guards? Should we pursue small claims court?

Any advice much appreciated!!

Redundancy package - after maternity and reorg

Hey everyone. I’m going to write this (in parallel I’m already looking for legal advice so I’m just waiting to hear from them) to see if anyone went through something similar.

My role has been confirmed at risk of redundancy. I was on maternity leave, then paid time off and lastly parents leave.

I have been asked during the last month of my leave (Maternity leave already finished) to join consultation calls. To be honest, the process was a mess. HR was just ticking boxes and my current manager was not helpful at all. There was a preference for other candidates (they were already working together). The package they offer is statutory + small ex gratia and payment for the notice instead of working. So that’s an equivalent of ~3 months salary.

In summary, my role is not disappearing though I’m being made redundant, it’s “evolving” as part of a restructure in the company, they’re reducing headcount. This role will be performed by another colleague. Additionally, I wasn’t offered any other positions, they told me to apply through the careers site (as any candidate would do). They didn’t offer me any alternative roles, they made me do tests and interviews for some other roles I knew I wasn’t a strong fit and the one which was my current role (evolved with additional tasks), and an interview for my current enhanced role. I still did very well in the interviews, but I knew their decision was made before then.

I guess my questions here (which I will also discuss with the solicitor) are:

- could there be a case of unfair dismissal? The process was not transparent or structured, there was clear bias from the manager and the role will still exist. That’s apart from no clarity in the selection criteria.

- Could there be a case of maternity discrimination? I know this might be a bit more tricky as I was already back from maternity leave, but I had to go on emergency leave during the previous restructure as my baby was born premature, this was inconvenient for the company at that time and I know that other colleagues were working with this manager who is making my role redundant, I didn’t have the opportunity to show my work or skills and I feel I was being put at a disadvantage throughout the whole process.

- Any experience handling a claim like this one before going to WRC or even after?

I just want to understand if anyone went through something similar, if you were able to negotiate or if you have any recommendations apart from contacting a solicitor who specializes in work matters. Thanks!

Concerned about delay between bank giving loan, and closing on house sale

So in my case the bank handed over the load to my solicitor on Thursday and he eventually replied to me on Monday to say that:

  • We have been in contact with Vendors Solicitors however their clients are in [X country] and they are waiting for signed closing documentation to be couriered to them so they are not yet in a position to close.

I'm presuming the mortgage payments kick in as soon as they give the loan out (as opposed to when the sale closes). So basically at this point, I've a mortgage on a house I don't own. I don't think this means I'm losing money as I'm not paying rent at the moment.

Given that I signed the contracts over 5 weeks ago, so I'm surprised they haven't yet signed theirs. Should my solicitor not have anticipated this somehow? I'm wondering does the documentation then need to be couriered back before the sale goes through, because their solicitor is in this country. They're pretty far away!

The only possible upside is that if interest rates go up during the delay. And yes, I'm not comfortable with my solicitor.

Thanks

What's it like applying for planning permission retention?

Turns out the extension we built is within the floor area limit but the height is over by 0.6m for an exemption. We'll now need to apply for retention.

What's this process like? Is it expensive, time consuming, stressful, straightforward?

Any advice for De Facto Partner without cohabitation please 🙏

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice or experiences regarding the De Facto Partner permission in Ireland.

My Irish boyfriend(25) and I(27) have been in a relationship for over 2 years (since May 2024), and it’s very stable, but hasn’t reached the marriage stage.

I’m a non-EU member, and my current visa stamp 1G expires this December. We are exploring the possibility of applying as a de facto partner

Here’s our situation:

  1. We don’t officially have shared address evidence. I live in a homestay in Bray- it is a very good setup, a nice double room for €650/month. He lives in Greystones with his family, no rent. It only takes about 10–15 minutes by bus between us, and his workplace (Bray Business Park) is actually right in between Bray and Greystones.

  2. We spend most of our time together(at least 4 days per week). He comes to Bray on Tuesday and Thursday, sometimes also Friday, straight after work. We go to Greystones on weekends (spending time with his family).

  3. In practice, we live very much like a cohabiting couple. Beyond dates and travel, we share everyday life — grocery shopping, cooking, and general day-to-day living together

  4. Financially, we have regular transfers for living expenses, it’s about €10K over the 2 years. Secondly, we have a joint bank savings account for buying a house, and we’ve saved around €10k till now, and we are continuing to contribute to it.

  5. I’ve spent the last two Christmases with his family, and I’ve met his extended relatives. He also travelled with me to Asia last year for about 3 weeks there. Our relationship is fully known and supported by both of our families and friends.

The main reason we haven’t moved in together is financial. We did consider renting together, but the housing situation in Ireland is very expensive — a place suitable for both of us would easily cost €1500+ per month. Both of our families suggested that we save our income towards buying a home instead of spending it on rent. Also, I’ve been very lucky with my current homestay — the landlord is incredibly kind and supportive, and is happy for my partner to stay over frequently, which makes our situation more flexible.

I understand that cohabitation is a key requirement for de facto applications, but I’ve also seen some mentions that exceptions might be considered in certain circumstances.

So I wanted to ask:

Has anyone successfully applied for De Facto Partner permission in Ireland without 2 full years of formal cohabitation?

Or is the lack of official cohabitation evidence (same address proof) basically a deal breaker?

Thank you for readying through so far🙏I would appreciate any insights or experiences from you guys 🙏 🙏🙏 please help me.

Neighbour ignoring our requests for repairmen to access her garden so they can reach our windows and roof

Hi there,

We need some repairs done on the window and roof of our property. Because of where these are, for safety and access reasons, the repairmen need access to the next door neighbour's garden to put scaffolding in for a day or two. This is the only way they can get up there to do the job.

We've tried knocking on their door several times but they don't answer. I even tried putting a letter in the letterbox kindly explaining the situation and giving them my number to phone.

Is there anything we can legally do if they continue to ignore us?

Thank you in advance.
