Added highlights

I've used henna for over 15 years. And while I get more and more gray, which adds dimension, I sometimes get a little bored and want to brighten things up. I thought I'd share my most recent hair experiment.

I mixed Shwarzkopf Blond Me (can lighten up to 9 levels) with 30V, thickly and hand placed some highlights. No foils because I am lazy Did I do a good job? Not really. It's literally amateur hour. But did it turn out ok? Yup.

Did I fry my hair? It feels tangled in the shower but it feels fine dry. Let me explain though. I tried this is Feb with a different product and I think the peroxide had gone bad because it did almost nothing. Then I tried again in March with that first product (Redken freehand) and it just wasn't powerful enough to lighten the hair and it does not contain that bond stuff and the added bond stuff weakened the bleach. I already had the BlondMe but I didn't like how liquid it was until I saw a video that said you could mix your bleach thick. Eureka! So really I have bleached it 2.5 times in 3 months and some strands might not appreciate that.

Because I am lazy (and really can't spend 5 or 6 hours on my hair in one day) I usually throw some redken shades demi permanent over the highlights for a week before I henna my hair again.

So I bleached this around mid-April and my last henna application was about 10 days ago. Current henna recipe is 100 grams Red Raj from Henna Sooq, about 30ish grams of Cassia, a tablespoon of copperberry from Mehandi.com. I mix with hot water and let it sit for an hour then throw it in the fridge until I am ready to use it. I leave it on for 4 hours. And I freeze what isn't used for next time.

Obviously, test bleach before using. I have been watching videos of hairdressers for years but I liked the Madison Reed balayage instruction video for placement ideas. I didn't really follow it this time, but I've used the V shape in years past.

The 1st and 2nd photos are inside near a window. The 3rd and 4th are outside. I have no product in my hair and didn't use the expensive shampoo today.

ORANGE PANIC

Edit, y'all: I appreciate all the suggestions, and I can see why you'd be giving them, based on my title! But I was really just laughing w people who would understand. I really don't mind having orange roots and brows for a few days every couple months.

I have been coloring my hair w henna for over 5 years, and still, *every time*, I get the orange panic lol. I *know* it will be fine; it is every time. But this round, I waited waaay longer than normal, so my brows and my 1.5" roots are ON FIRE! The difference between my lengths and my roots is crazy to me, every time.

I have always used The Henna Guys pure lawsonia powder, mixed w distilled water and either put in the fridge overnight or sat on the counter for a few hours. I use henna for the strengthening properties more than the colorb that's just a bonus.

Advice henna hair dye

Hi, could I please have some advice as it is the first time I will use a henna hair dye. On the picture is my current hair colour (the roots are natural, dull dark blonde, the copper part is from chemical dye).

I ordered a 113g Medium Brown Chestnut Rainbow Henna.
-Will this be enough for my hair length ?
-What would be the best thing to mix it with ?
-How long should I wait until applying it?
-How long should I leave it on my hair?

I’m hoping for a uniform result if possible, and not too dark or red.

Thanks in advance ☺️

Burgundy Henna?

Hi guys! I use Nupur Henna Godrej henna powder to dye my hair but it shows up kind of orange on my dark brown hair. My goal is to achieve a deep burgundy overtone to my hair. Are there any natural additives I can add to my henna powder to achieve this color? If so, where can I buy? Thanks!

Kia Ora from NZ

I thought some of you would be interested in my hendigo results. I let the activated Henna sit in a warm spot for 4 hrs and then SEPERATLEY activated my indigo with hot water right before I was going to put it on my hair. Right after I mixed the two together I put it on my hair. Indigo apparently loses its dye quite quickly so you should never add it to your henna in the beginning. I had it on my head for 3 hrs before rinsing. Hope this helps. I do notice a bit of greenish hue on the very tips of my hair which hopefully fade with time or I'll just chop the ends off. I have split ends for days so that may be why it turned a bit weird at my ends. The results pic is around 1.5 hrs after rinsing the mix out so it will probably change color in the next few days.

Ps, I magic erased my son out of the second picture so it might look a little weird.

What does henna look like on Asian black/dark brown hair with some white hairs but not very much?

Will the black/dark brown hair look funny after henna?

I dye my hair due to premature greying, but I wanna do something more exotic, like blonde or fully grey style

Do I gotta grow out the henna first ,then dye?

Henna check

Hey

I was wondering whether its possible to check whether the henna is authentic. I have used henna lately called Merhaba, just something I saw in the store and bought but it gave very little color and also I noticed it did not bleed at all after I washed it, is this the mark of authentic henna or the opposite?

I prepared it with lemon juice and hot/to warm water and left it for 6 hours.

Dying roots only with tangled hair

Hello,

I’m looking for advice on dyeing just my roots. I use It’s Pure auburn dye. However, I want to avoid henna build-up, which is why I only want to dye my roots. Now, that’s a challenge. I have a lot of fine, curly hair. I understand that you should apply henna to clean, damp hair without any products in it. However, without conditioner or a hair mask after washing, my hair is a huge, tangled mess. Especially when it’s wet or damp. Dividing the hair into sections is virtually impossible in that condition. Does anyone have any tips on the best way to tackle this?

Thanks.

I try to do just my roots but it’s hard not to get it everywhere else (especially the back of my head). I end up getting frustrated and just cover my whole head each time. :/ There has to be some tricks I am not aware of.

Henna + índigo

Hi! I've been using 7-color dye + henna for a few years, but I'm pregnant and now I only apply henna to my natural roots. I wanted to darken the lengths a bit to make them more similar. Would using 70% henna + 30% indigo look good? Or 50% of each?

Hello everyone,

I need some advice and your thoughts about henna in general these days. Has anything changed?

I am in Bulgaria and I am looking for a good henna brand.

I have medium-dark brown hair and I love the copper highlighs henna gives me.

Some background: I used to dye my hair with Khadi henna for years. However, in the past few months, it fails to add any color on my hair. I have tried the henna fox brand we have here, but it is not much better and it is much harder to apply as the powder is not as fine as khadi. I now found a solid bar henna from lush and will try it next. I hope the solid part and assisting oils in it might help. Obviously, I am not expecting crazy dying results due to my natural hair color but, I want to see the red-copper tints I used to get the previous years. The lower parts of my hair still hold the henna color from before, but my roots are getting browner and browner. I use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner to avoid the henna color being stripped out.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? Is it possible my hair changed through the years? Or, has the quality of pigment in henna decreased? Does anyone know of a henna brand available in southern Europe that has good color potency? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated 😊🙏

So, I bought of henna powder probably a year ago in the eventually event I would dye my hair with it. I’ve never dyed my hair permanently with anything before so this is a bit nerve wracking for me. I just mixed a bowl of henna to finally take the plunge.

Vitamatic organics, organic henna powder.

I’m technically a red head and I have a lot of red in my very dark brown hair. My goal is to make the red that is my hair naturally pop more.

I’ve tested my hair off my head a few times. It gets the red I do want. The problem is not the dying part of the whole thing. It’s the after.

I didn’t really think about my shampoo in the decision. So I use medicated/prescription ketoconazole 2% shampoo, once a week. It’s one of those things where I can’t not use it. My scalp gets all fucked if I don’t. ALSO I have to leave it in for at least 5 minutes every time I have to use it. If I don’t, it doesn’t work.

So with something as strong as medicated shampoo. I’m worried there might be an unforeseen chemical reaction.

If anyone has knowledge or advice about this, it would be greatly appreciated. Cause either way I’m gonna fully commit tomorrow to dye everything. Unless someone warns me.

Edit: on the bag, there is no extra ingredients. It’s just plain straight henna. As this a first time, I didn’t wanna mess with mixing any add ins. So just room temp water and the powder. And I’m gonna let it sit over night. More so for nerves, so I have time to really think about this.

Hello everyone! I have a hard time making decisions and am really stuck on this one. I have dark brown hair that is really long and has about 15-20% gray. I have not colored my hair at all in about a whole year, so the grays are long now.

My cousin invited me to a work event of hers this coming Friday. I ordered henna and indigo from henna sooq and it finally arrived yesterday. I had done some research before hand but now I have analysis paralysis and am scared. I did do a patch test for allergies on my skin and on a little hair. No allergic reaction on the skin, and the grays looked orange lol.

I am so overwhelmed by all of the info online. I don’t know what to do. Since the event is on Friday is it too late to henna? Should I just dye with chemical dye at the salon?

I just want my hair to be close to my dark brown color and for my grays to be decently blended. Should I do henna and an overtone mask for now? What would you do?

I used a stencil but we don't see any details, how can I save it ?

I used real henna and made the paste

The original stencil looked good but I'm used to them not really working so I knew it wasn't gonna be perfect...but I don't know if I like it or hate it, from afar it's okay I guess, It just looks like a diamond shape but from close up it's ugly..

I want to try to save it but idk if i can, it's on my left arm and I write and draw with my right arm, I can try to draw something around but idk, any advice?

I colour my hair with chemical dyes for years, levels 5 or 6 (on my hair it is medium to dark brown). I have almost completly gray natural hair (40+, it's genetics, grays started growing in early 20s) but because of profession and environment in general I prefer not to go naturally gray. Because of health I would like to switch from chemical dye to henna. I recently bought henna, brand is khadi, colour is natural hazel, 100% natural. It contains 100 g leaf or fruit powder mix from indigo, henna, amla, bhringaraj and neem. No other ingredients listed. Is it possible to cover grays with this henna at all? How should I start?
