GW scholarship and grant displacement policy

https://financialaid.gwu.edu/outside-resources#NewUndergraduate

There has been this concern bugging me for a while now. So I was told that GW is a displacement school and does not allow stacking of scholarships. And any money I get outside of GW will replace the grant GW gave me. So I have like close to $10k to pay for GW, deducting FAFSA, and the GW grant. They offered me $5000 in federal loans and like $3000 for Federal work studies. And I accumulated close to $20,000 (a combination of multiple small scholarships) in outside scholarships that are going to help me in my first year of college. So will they deduct $20,000 from the GW grant and make me pay for the $10,000, or will they take the $10,000 and use the other $10,000 to cover the rest of what I have to pay? If so, I want to refuse the outside scholarships, so that other students will get the benefit instead of the money going to waste.

Amazon Delivery

I am staying on the vern over the summer. With how getting to and from the vern is, grocery shopping is going to be a bit of a weekly hassle. Last year, I remember a friend of mine saying she used to Amazon Delivery to buy her groceries (albeit she did not live on the vern). What's been people's experience using it? I've never used Amazon Delivery here. Is it the same as sending other things to campus? Have you ever used it to buy perishable food like meat?

Pursuing PhD and JD at the Same Time?

Hi everyone! I was just accepted into the PhD program at GW and am beyond elated! I'm curious about how flexible things are at GW... Has anyone pursued a PhD and a JD simultaneously rather than completing them one after another? Both programs suit my research interests, and I would love to find a way to work through them at the same time in an effort to cut time (by having some of the courses go to both degrees, or other permutations that both programs can agree on), rather than completing each program, one by one. Would love to hear from anyone, or someone you know, who has done both concurrently!

GW vs Northwestern

Hi! I just recently committed to northwestern but am having some regrets about gw. I’ve wanted to go to dc for a long time and know I’m going to settle down there. I know northwestern is a good school that offers a more traditional college experience but I can’t help but feel like I missed out. I know gw is good for internships/ employment and the location will help a million times more with what I want to do (consulting or science research for fed gov). Plus I got presidential scholarship and honors college (both schools are same price)

What do you yall think?🫩

Public health/pre med

i’m an incoming freshman at George Washington University and I will be majoring in public health with a concentration in premed. I had a few questions on the community there specifically for public health and premed is it very competitive, is there a lot of great deflation, is advising/help with internships or research bad, and who are some good professors to have? My goal is a T20 med school (i turned down my dream vanderbilt cuz i got a full ride to GWU 💔💔) so i truly want to make the most. I would appreciate any help thank you so much!

what kind of gpa is GW looking for from transfers?

i was going thru a hard time this semester and it kinda tanked my GPA which is driving me insane because i really wanted to apply/transfer to GW but now i’m scared i’ll be rejected just because i was struggling. will that hinder my chances? is there a minimum requirement or some sort of average they look for? do they even care about GPA when it comes to transfer students? 😭

GWU vs Scripps College

Hello!

I've already committed to George Washington but I got off the waitlist for Scripps College and is now deciding between the two; they both cost the same and gave me the same amount of aid. I'm an international relations and biology double major deciding between premed and prelaw. What I value the most in colleges is

  1. academics (i plan to go to grad school, so I need a good GPA)

  2. internship opportunities

  3. community/vibe and finally

  4. return on investment (gotta make sure that degree holds weight)

I've toured both colleges and absolutely loved both, but I loved both in different ways: GWU is obviously more city and fast-paced, Scripps is more tight-knit, intimate. I'm from Los Angeles, so take that as you will.

When touring scripps, I absolutely loved the community, campus, and culture. It's very supportive and collaborative, and of course, the ability to cross-enroll at the different schools under the claremont consortium is a very unique characteristic. I also love that it's a women's college under a broader community; all in all, the community and environment is amazing, but I'm concerned about opportunities, internships, and academics because it's obviously not gonna be as good as Washington D.C. given that it's lowkey in the middle of nowhere and an hour out of LA... I also grew up in LA and I love DC way more than LA.

When touring GWU, I loved the city; access to amazing internships (esp as an IR major), really good public transportation, unparalleled opportunities. It's literally washington dc and I chose it in the first place because I absolutely love the city experience + the opportunites that come with it. However, again, I'm worried about the community and being able to make friends. I've heard that GWU is definitely a more grown-up, independent experience which I'm not opposed to but it sounds a bit daunting

The risk I run going to Scripps college is losing out on really good opportunities in terms of career but also being too stagnant as a person. I feel like going to a college across the country and being able to have a GWU experience would make me grow as a person because i'd be learning to be more independent. However, at GWU, I risk feeling more lonely and losing out on the typical close-knit campus experience.

TLDR; Scripps is a more comfortable and tight-knit experience with decent academics/internship opportunities (close to home, supportive) VS GWU is a more outgoing, city, new and independent experience with amazing opportunities and connections. I know there's no losing here and these two experiences are equally as good, but I have to choose between two veryyy different experiences.

I honestly wish I had seen reviews like this before using them.

As a college student during move-out week, you’re already stressed and trying to figure everything out quickly, and this company completely took advantage of that. They make the pricing sound reasonable at first, but once they already have your stuff, random “extra item” charges suddenly start showing up and the total becomes WAY higher than what you originally paid.

The most ridiculous one was getting charged $140 to store a poster tube. Literally a poster tube with some cheap posters inside. When we complained and asked if they could just throw it away instead, they said the disposal fee would ALSO be $140. That’s insane.

They were also super misleading about pickup. They advertise “door to door” service, so we specifically asked if they were allowed to come up into dorm rooms, and they told us yes. Then on move-out day they suddenly couldn’t come upstairs at all, so we ended up carrying everything ourselves anyway in the middle of move-out chaos. If we had known that from the beginning, we never would’ve used them.

Customer service was also exhausting to deal with. It took so much repeated messaging just to get actual answers, and even then a lot of the information ended up being wrong. At one point I literally asked them, “Is this AI?” because the responses felt so weird and unhelpful.

Overall the whole thing felt really predatory toward college students who are stressed, busy, and just trying to store their stuff for the summer. Please be careful before using this company because the final price can end up being WAY more than what they make it seem like upfront.

If im already registered in a Microeconomics course is there any need to register for this? I’m a finance major so I know Economics is a really useful course but I don’t want to register for anything unnecessary

Transferring with a D

I got accepted to GW as a community college transfer. I applied with a 3.5 and after this semester I’m finishing with a 3.4. I’ve gotten all A’s in my other classes from this semester but im pretty sure I’m getting a D in of my classes. Would GW rescind my admission if I get a D?

How hard is it to become a politician if you graduate from GWU?

EDIT: MY question was not rather does GWU solely base me off being a politician

My question is, does the connections you get at GWU real towards your carrier’s? My immigrant father told me they had “connections” and i js wanted to confirm or be able to call him out on that statement.

Committed to GW and trying to decide whether to dorm or commute. I live about 21 miles away in MD, so the commute would probably be by Metro. If anyone has any pros or cons, it would be appreciated.

Hi! I am an upcoming freshman at GWU for fall 2026. In reviewing the university health insurance, I realized that my home insurance (MassHealth) does not meet the university requirements and I must purchase the schools own health insurance plan. However, I am low income, and this would pose a financial strain on my already tight budget. In looking online, they only offer financial assistance with this for graduate students. Is this already factored into cost of attendance, or is it a separate charge? If it is a separate charge, what can I do to avoid having to pay the 3.2k/yr while still getting coverage? Thank you for any help!
