What to check on GL1200 that sat before a big trip

What to check on GL1200 that sat before a big trip

Just picked up this ‘87 Aspencade! Previous owner seemed like the perfect PO, kept it immaculate, always serviced, older guy who had to let it go for health reasons… It is in pretty pristine shape, rode it back home about 2hrs away without a hiccup. However, it did sit for about a year (gas drained, battery on tender) and my plan is to ride it out to the Indy 500 in a little over a week, about a 9hr ride (will split into two days each way). The oil in it is from last years change but didn’t get any use and looks brand new… will probably change out of abundance of caution but what are ppl’s opinion on changing modern oil just from time alone? PO “never had issues” with charging system… I’m going to check the head bearings, it did wobble on me when I let go of the bars on test ride, didn’t try it again today, could have been from tires sitting but they were aired up correctly. If you were in my position and needed to get to Indy and back without getting stranded… what would be your absolute essentials to go through, parts to bring etc etc. Fucking love riding this thing already, its like a damn time capsule!

I’ve posted here a couple times just to ask some questions but now I’m just here to show off my gorgeous 88 GL1500. I have never loved a bike so much.

Is this a good deal?

1996 only 55k miles. The guy says it needs nothing and has brand new tires. He's asking 6500

The Gold Wing is an S-tier "adventure" bike (if you take it easy)

Are 1980s Goldwings ever stolen?

I was wondering in general if 1980s Goldwings are ever theft targets. My guess is no given they are extremely heavy and basically worthless (in the grand scheme of motor vehicle values).

On the motorcycle sub you always see posts like "You need to have at least 3 different locking devices on your motorcycle, one time I went into the gas station to take a piss and 3 mexicans came up and loaded my bike onto a trailer and drove off in 30 seconds flat".

Its usually dudes on 400 pound, high value modern litre sport bikes though. Like do people steal 800lb Goldwings? You sure as hell aren't lifting it onto a trailer without an entire team of people and even rolling it would be pretty hard, but I don't know how hard it is for an experienced thief to just get on one of these and bypass or force the ignition.

My work has a gated parking lot so I'm not worried about it being stolen from there, I live in the middle of nowhere so home isn't a concern either. I'm mostly wondering about these supposed "30 second thefts" that happen while your inside Walmart getting groceries.

My first Goldwing. Behold: this is Colossus, my $2500 '88 GL1500 with 71k miles.

I'm glad I don't skip leg day, because this hefty 880lb sumbitch is absolutely MASSIVE. I thought the F6C Valkyrie and Stratoliner 1900 I had were heavy fellas, but man this thing is huge. That being said, this is the cheapest, oldest and biggest bike I've ever owned, and so far I love everything about it. US129 tail of the dragon was on my path home, and I couldn't believe how fast this was able to handle that road. I've rode/drove the dragon nearly 100 times, but I was totally blown away by how quick and nimble this brick is.

*EVERYTHING WORKS*. This thing is 38 years old and all of the speakers, cruise control and other electronics all function flawlessly. I do need new running light bulbs, various trim pieces and a new windshield though, as the extension the previous owner put on cracked the top, and the handlebars bump the sides. Otherwise, I totally understand these bikes now. My Valkyrie gave me a taste of old Hondas and the glorious 1520 flat 6, but this Goldwing will probably be one of many down the line.

Just finished the trunk swap and got the new battery installed. The old one lasted for 8 years; not bad!

This is a sorta funny post as I'm going to replace the old tire with the new one in the picture.. But for giggles and grins, how many more miles does everyone think are left on my old tire? This is for my 2024 Goldwing. And why do shops charge so much to just swap out the tires?

Traded a 2023 CVO Road Glide, wanted something more comfortable for the wife to be able to ride 2Up. The DCT is taking some getting used too and soooo need some highway pegs to adjust the riding position but LOVE IT!!

Looking to Buy

I’ve been looking at joining the Goldwing club. Not much info off the Facebook post. But is it a good deal? If you can’t see, it has 10,310 miles

Rear Brake Rotor Issues

Hey all, I have purchased a 1990 Goldwing Aspencade. Super clean, very comfortable, love it.

However, it needed a new rear tire, so I took the wheel to a shop, had it swapped, all is good.

When I was removing everything, I noticed the top bolt on the caliper was just hand tight.

Didn't think much of it.

When reinstalling everything, I noticed it would not tighten down, appears to just be stripped out.

What is going to be the move for fixing this? Replace the caliper or any way to tap the hole out? It has that kind of special bolt so I'm not sure that's an option but wanted to ask here.

If replacing it is the move, where is the best place to get one? eBay or can these still be bought from Honda?

Appreciate any help in advance!

I joined the club 😁

So this morning I got up at 3am to fly from Canberra to Melbourne and look at a GL1000 I've been lusting after. Truth be told, I've been avoiding it for a while because I knew that if I liked it, I'd be in serious danger of increasing the bike collection to 5.

It's a completely original '75 with 21500 miles. Still has the factory mufflers in good condition and all original paint. The seat is nice with no wear or cracks. Everything has a delightful lightly used and well-loved patina.

The weather was foul in Melbourne today. Wet, windy and frosty. Luckily I brought my woolen thermals and rain gear, and managed to get in a quick test ride between downpours. It rides really nicely. A little rough when cold but perfectly sweet once warm. Shifts up and down the box crisply. The brakes are adequate, although they could do with some decent new pads and maybe a caliper rebuild. Checked all the rubber components, which looked good. I was unable to determine when the timing belts were last replaced. I pulled the covers and they were nice and pliable with no cracks or chunks missing from the teeth, so they're ok for now. Tyres are Bridgestone BT45's with decent tread, although they were 10 years old so getting a little hard.

Overall the bike is a peach. I bought it and immediately got a new set of Bridgestone BT46's fitted, then rode back to the motel - 45 minutes across town in rush hour traffic, in the rain. Fun times!

Tomorrow I have a free day to rest, fit the new tail bag I got, and pack my gear. I will set out on Saturday for the 600 k ride home. I can't wait to hit the open road 😎

2nd day trip of the year done!

Just got back from the 2nd day trip I have taken this year and still in love. I went from Detroit, along lake snt Clair, along snt Clare River and ending at port Huron. Then I legit just motored back home down the interstate since I was getting sore from being on the bike for 5ish hours. Did some sight seeing and some pictures, but only one of the bike at this standard oil store. I did 200 miles and I was astonished that I got 47.8MPG on the way there which was mostly 55mph. And a random goal of mine is to see every great lake this year, so far 1 lake down 4 to go.

I plan on getting the bike mentioned above and want to know what engine oil yall would use, I think I would go with pro honda HP4S full synthetic or motul 7100 with a k&n oil filter, any suggestions welcome along with what I should use for the final drive, I already have an Idea on coolant air filter and spark plugs. TIA. Update: I am in south Texas incase that helps I already have an idea of the oil weight being 10w-40.
