Would you buy a 2018 Expedition Max Limited 4x4 with 125k miles if the 10R80 CDF issue and cam phasers were already repaired?

Looking for opinions from Expedition owners/mechanics.

I’m considering a 2018 Ford Expedition Max Limited 4x4 with 125,000 miles. Seller is asking $21,000 and is firm on price.

History looks clean on CARFAX:
1-owner
No accidents reported
No title issues
No odometer issues
Regular oil changes documented

Major repairs/history:

10R80 transmission was overhauled by Ford at around 80,000 miles with the newer updated CDF component, and it has driven about 44k miles since that transmission repair.

Had cam phaser/VCT rattle history
Seller recently did timing-related work including timing chain/tensioners, VCT solenoids, cam parts, cam sprockets, gaskets, coolant, oil/filter, etc.

Also had valve cover leak repaired, heater hose/coolant leak repaired, and seatbelt recall done

My main concern is buying a high-mileage 3.5 EcoBoost/10R80 Expedition even though the big known issues appear to have been addressed.

Would you consider this a decent buy at $21,000, or is 125k miles still too risky on these?

The Ford App on Apple Watch

It does the following…

  1. Can lock/unlock vehicle, beep horn, turn lights on/off
  2. Start vehicle
  3. Current Location of vehicle
  4. Current gas range
  5. And I can have multiple vehicles on one app
I like it..... a lot lol

2026 1k miles, jerking at super low speed?

Anyone else having this? After I go from park and move to drive waiting until it clicks over and I accelerate low speed it feels …. Jerky. Higher speeds are fine but super low feels funny. Anyone else? Thanks! Wondering if I should take it in

2017 ford exp. Making clicking noise coming from here

It started maybe 2 months ago, it is random. Mostly when I start the car or shut it off or any door opens or the trunk opens. But it will also happen when I’m just driving sometimes. It clicks for about 10 to 20 seconds of the time and then stops. Has this happened to anyone else?

Dealer says I don’t need an oil change at 1k miles… but

I’m doing it anyway! Thanks to this group!! My research and this group shows it’s a good idea. Dealer looked at my like I was a dumb broad when I rolled up. Oh well! I said I’m paying .. please change my oil. Thanks!

2018, 200k miles

Are we crazy for considering this? My husbands boss buys new vehicles for himself and the traveling sales staff then passes them down when they need to buy a new one and then sells it when it’s just done.

Details: $5000, 200,000 miles on it. The interior at least is like pristine. However it does need a timing chain replaced that was quoted for $4k so essentially it’s a $9000 vehicle. It has towed some, but that wasn’t what it was mainly used for (so maybe every 6 months it was used for towing).

Pros: it’s seriously the nicest car we could even imagine buying. If we go anywhere else and try to buy something for $9k we are not getting this.

Cons: I don’t want to be taken in by the bells and whistles, but it just breaks down next week.

We’ve gotten other SUVs from him but only GMC and they’ve driven into the 300k range. I had zero experience with Ford and I’m not sure if we should just pass.

Loud Heavy Clunking Noise with a Heavy Jerk

When starting my 2020 and putting it from PARK to DRIVE, I'm getting a very heavy clunking sound with one pretty hard jerk of the truck. It doesn't do it every single time, but about 25%. Of course when I took it to a shop, it behaved perfectly and they didn't get to see what I'm frequently dealing with. Nothing came up on diagnostics (or so they say). Occasionally, when I'm driving, I'll get a noise with mild jerking as if it wants to shift to another gear. That's only on occasion though. Could this be in need of a new trans? If so, why wouldn't diagnostics pick up on this? How much would this run me? My warranty ended.

Brake woes

I'm working on a 07 expedition doing brake work. It's the BM vehicle and she did some damage to the brakes. The front right caliper was so bad it was dumping fluid with every press of the pedal. The rotor itself was ground down pretty good. I replaced both front rotors, calipers and pads. I also replaced the driver rear rotor as I believe the slide pins were stuck and wore the rotor pretty well. I've also replaced the brake master cylinder and did an abs bleed with my scan tool.

If I pump the pedal up I get a good feel but let off more than 3-5 seconds and it goes to the floor again. I've bled the lines, abs bleed and rebled. Still same issue. Only parts that haven't been changed are abs related and rear calipers. I'm ready to be done with POS and BM needs her vehicle back. Anyone have any ideas here?

Pic attached is of the PS front rotor. DS rear rotor was similar but not as bad.

2024 Max XLT

Purchased it new. Has 36k miles currently. Have already changed trans fluid and filter. Diffs, transfer case, and spark plugs will be around 40-45k. Hasn’t skipped a beat.

2017 Transfer case replacement

I’m looking at having to replace the transfer case on my Expedition. It doesn’t disengage in 2H. The dealership recommended replacing it. 88k miles on the clock, and I’ve already had to pay for a new transmission. Different story for a different day.

Anyway is it a straightforward operation or do I need specialized equipment to get the replacement functional/calibrated?

I’ve turned a wrench or two, so I’m pretty comfortable doing this myself if nothing extra is needed.

Steering wheel FORD badge replacement?

I have a 2016 Expy with the blue and white FORD badge in the center of my steering wheel. It's built-in and non removable and mine is in bad shape cosmetically.

What's a good option to solve this problem? Any quality peel and stick overlay solutions?

Thanks in advance

Ford rebuilt my 2021 Expedition transmission 4x and still won’t replace it — advice?

Looking for others’ experiences/advice here because I’m honestly at my wit’s end with our Expedition.

We have a 2021 Expedition XLT that we purchased in April 2023 with 42k miles on it. Going into it, we knew these vehicles had some known transmission issues, so we specifically purchased an extended warranty expecting that if/when something happened, Ford would handle it appropriately.

Fast forward to December 2025 — we brought it in for a transmission issue fully expecting Ford to replace the transmission and move on. Instead, we’ve now had the vehicle back in the shop THREE times, the transmission has been rebuilt FOUR separate times, and Ford still refuses to authorize a new crated transmission.

At this point, I’ve completely lost confidence in the repair process. We’re beyond frustrated that they continue attempting rebuild after rebuild instead of replacing the unit entirely.

Has anyone successfully gotten Ford to approve a full transmission replacement instead of repeated rebuilds? If so:
• Who did you escalate through?
• Did you involve Ford corporate?
• Lemon law attorney?
• BBB Auto Line?
• Anything specific you said or documented that finally pushed it through?

Would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences or any advice on next steps because this has become exhausting.
