Help. Fell down rabbit hole for a second runabout bike and can't decide. UK.

Hi all. Preface: 6ft1", pushing 90kg, strong roadie.

Looking for a bike to live discreetly in a fabia boot because literally nowhere else to put it.

Ideally it should suit being ridden fairly hard on short bursts to the shops, gym, work occasionally, short distances of 3 miles a run. No major hills. Essentially using it to top up time in saddle for racing.

So far I've shyed away from Decathlon offerings due to being on the absolute limit of height and weight - I WANT the 1 second folder but I think it'll be twitchy and on the edge. It is convenient af though. Put off by 16in wheels (single wall) and weight total on leftie fork.

I've started looking at cheaper terns like the B7 but again I'm coming towards the limit and get the feedback that they are flexy under load and will be worse with seatpost nearly at max.

This brings me to spending money i don't want to, but the BYB P8 is looking like it's hands down superior and stiff enough to take some abuse, obviously not the fastest folder though but fair compromise with rigidity and total payload.

I've looked around on ebay and am finding too many dreamers with 10 year old used terns expecting brompton value, so I'm now venturing off down new/nearly new because I've found some better deals.

Now totally overthinking it.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Help choosing 16 inch bike

Hi folks, I've been struggling to make a decision on a folding bike.
My options are

  • Brompton C line 6 gears (1300 EUR)
  • Decathlon 1 second folding bike (840 EUR)
  • Dahon Boardwalk D7 16 (699 EUR)
  • Dahon K9 (999 EUR)
  • Dahon Mariner D8 (650 EUR)

I would love to get the Brompton since I am purchasing the bike off a Cycle2Work scheme in Ireland (close to 50% savings). However, having done extensive research on reddit I realise that Bromptons have a bit of a walled garden when it comes to parts and that is the only issue I have with them.

The Decathlon 1 second bike looks great since it is compact and the instant unfold looks super convenient. However, I have doubts about the repairability aspect of this bike since there is little information on the internet compared to Bromptons and Dahons.

The D7 and K9 look fantastic. The Mariner D8 is a 20 inch option I am considering. I currently have a used Vitesse D7 which I enjoy riding but I am about to sell it due to certain circumstances. My preference for Dahons lie in being able to repair them with off the shelf parts and the price.

I would love to hear your thoughts on which one I should go for. Would love to hear about the Decathlon bike if anyone has any experiences with repairs at Decathlon.

Recommendations EU/Germany 192cm/6'4

Hi fellows,
im browsing this sub and reading up on stuff for the past few days and appreciate all the info and knowledge thats accumulated here🙂
I could need some help to narrow down on choices for my needs.

-I'm 192/6'4 tall and weight about 97kg and am looking for a bike for my daily commute in Berlin - mostly streets/pavement sometimes a bit hilly but most would consider it flat I suppose.

-Budget is about 500-1000€max

-daily commute with bus&subway which includes passing crowded stairs and platforms.

On the radar I have:
-Decathlon Fold 500,560,1second
-Dahon Boardwalk 20"
-Tern BYB (favorite design but too expensive by quite a margin tbf)
-Alibaba bikes (but I shy away from them because of Decathlon as an alternative with store presence and service)

My brand new folding bike - advice needed

A Tern D7i - 2022

This is the first bike I’ve owned since I was a child. Bought it for commuting in Germany.

Any tips on maintenance and upkeep which will avoid any headaches later on? Will take any advice that is useful :)

The previous owner had it recently checked, so everything on it is tip-top. Breaks are solid, tyres too. Chain looks good and frame is excellent. Will buy a bell and lock for it before I travel down to Germany.

Ultra lightweight 17lb Aceoffix C5 build for $1500 all-in (taxes + tariffs) - Brompton T-Line alternative

I have a Brompton electric that I love, but I wanted something lighter that I'm willing to lock up outside at the gym (so not crazy expensive like the T-Line) and that I can also carry around for multimodal commutes with lots of stairs. Additionally, the fold had to have just as small of a footprint as a Brompton, as I'd love to fly to Europe/Asia and pack it in check-in luggage.

So here's my ongoing Aceoffix C5 build, which weighs less than the 4-speed T-line, despite including a rack and fenders. I went with Aceoffix b/c a fairly knowledgable youtube made a video about it and because its fold was exactly the same as a Brompton, whereas some other bikes seemed to have slightly larger folds and I was concerned about being able to pack those.

Item Cost (USD) Weight
Aceoffix C5 base bike (5-speed, 6069 AL frame, carbon T800 fork) $986 7,500 g / 16.5 lb
Aceoffix Lightweight titanium-axle pedals (single QR) $35 156 g / 5.5 oz
Carbon-titanium rear rack $80 170 g / 6.0 oz
ACEOFFIX UD carbon M-bar (600mm) $51 130 g / 4.6 oz
Carbon + Ti fenders (Aceoffix L-matte, front + rear) $118 145 g / 5.1 oz
Brompton Ergonomic Grips (Q103121, dealer-sourced US) ~$45 ~140 g / 4.9 oz
DDP shipping (China → Brooklyn, all duties included) $70
NY sales tax on Alibaba order (~8.875%) ~$112
TOTAL ~$1,497 ~7,750 g / 17.1 lb

Anyone else cut off this ugly stand on their Tern Vektron?

I know it’s for supporting when folding but I think I would manage fine without it and it’s a pain getting over the small threshold of my stairs as it constantly smashes it …. Plus it is ugly.

Anyone have luck removing it gracefully ?

Thanks

How easy is it to carry the Tern Tern Vektron S10 in stairs?

I'm thinking about buying the Tern Vektron S10 but i'd need to carry up and down the stairs where i live.. about 20 steps. How easy is it to grab, lift and hold it over the stairs?

Are these pedals in need of replacing? Should I get folding pedals?

Sorry about the weird question but a while ago I bought a used Tern D7i. The pedals I'm guessing are not the original as they do not fold. They have some wiggle to them. I'm not an experienced cyclist so I can't tell if it's a normal amount of wear and tear or if I should change them before something happens while riding and could lead to something bad. Couldn't find many videos about it and the ones I found are aimed to a more enthusiastic crowd with pro level gear.

Also, how important is it for a folding bike to have folding pedals. Hasn't been a problem for me so far but I'm wondering if there are specific situations when the pedals should fold. Like is it for the safety or stability of the bike when folded or just to save that much space.

I'm on a tight budget and I'd rather get a stable pedal than cheap out of folding pedals.

Is it okay to leave my Zizzo in the trunk all summer?

I just got a new Zizzo Forte and I love it. I use it for relaxing rides in paved forest trails near me. Is it okay to leave it in the back of my suv all summer, so it's available whenever I have time to stop and ride? I have it covered, so you can't see that there's a bike in there. I'm not really worried about theft, but I wondered if the heat build up in the car would be bad for the tires or any other part of the bike.

Going to be moving there to study, so I will need a bike for Tokyo just to get around. The reason I want a folding bike is so I can take it on the local train when I go to my hometown in countryside Japan, where the bike rules are stricter. So it's really just to get around to bus/train stations whenever I can't be on public transport. Any recommendations for brands?

I also want to be able to take it on checked luggage on a plane, so I don't want it to be super heavy.

Best ZiZZO folding bike based on my needs and uses

Hello everyone,

I am considering to get a folding bike from ZiZZO since they got a bunch of good quality folding bikes that are fairly priced and seem to have a good legit brand reputation. However, I would like to narrow down which ones would be the most suitable for me based on my needs and uses.

I will be using it mainly for short distance commutes and riding around my neighborhood for fun (not going off road/mountains or forest)

While I don’t live in a hilly area, there is a garage ramp from my house with a somewhat steep incline, so I’d like to be able to pedal my bike from there without any issues effortlessly

I would like it to have a highly comfortable seat that’s well padded/cushioned (while most of my rides will be short, I still would like it to be comfortable and have a good quality seat to maximize ride enjoyment)

I’d also like it to be lightweight and suitable for a slim young male under 6 ft tall to ride and maneuver around

Thanks in advance!

Grown man here without a car who hates the bus and is sick of uber. Because of space limitations, a foldable bike seems like the best choice for me.

Is it easy to ride for a total newbie? I never learned as a kid.
