Why would someone put a Saddam Hussein poster on their car (in Switzerland)?

Spotted a car in Switzerland with a Saddam Hussein poster on the back window. Didn’t expect that at all.

What’s the reasoning behind something like this? Is it political, cultural, or just meant to provoke reactions?

Trying to understand the context here.

Fashionable Zurich Ladies

Not only that I need to travel to a cold country now in spring, I also want to take advantage of the sales now of winter clothes.

So question for you, stylish Zurich ladies: what brands offer fashionable winter jackets?

I don’t want to wear a sports brand as this would not be for mountains, I have another jacket for that.

I am looking for a brand that offers nice pretty designs and warmth.

Which brands do you wear and like?

Any budget

Would you actually think about buying something like this, or am I wasting my time?

Hi folks

I’m working on a small project and I’m trying to figure out if it’s genuinely interesting or just one of those ideas that sounds better in my head.

The concept is simple:

You pick a location in the mountains on a map (for example a place that means something to you), and I turn the exact panorama into a laser engraving on a wooden board handmade from swiss wood. The panorama is rendered using digital terrain models (DTMs)

Right now I only have mockups and a basic alpha workflow. The website is just a landing page with a signup form, nothing you can really buy yet.

Before I invest more time and money into this, I’d like some brutally honest feedback:

- Is this something you’d actually buy or gift?

- Does it feel meaningful or more like a gimmick?

- What would make it worth it for you?

No need to sugarcoat it, give me your brutally honest opinion, positive or negative.

Edit: the product is inteded as a cutting board or serving board for cheese etc, not a wall decoration.

Edit 2: thanks for the comments so far. I am still at work will reply more in depth in the evening when I am at home and the kids are asleep.

Do you Iron your clothes?

The question is simple: Do you iron your clothes ?

I was in the office today and the question randomly came up in our team. To my surprise i was the only one out of 5 that iron my clothes. Mainly the ones to go to work with. Jeans, Tshirt, sweaters and shirts.. none of my coworkers ironed.. i was surprised to be honest. So i am wondering, do you iron your clothes?

Iranian parents with Swiss visa unable to travel due to war + medical emergency – options?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice or similar experiences.

My parents and older sister are Iranian and live in Iran. They were supposed to visit me and my partner in Switzerland from April 28 to May 23 (they have a valid Swiss Schengen visa from Swiss Embassy in Iran from April 28 to May 25). However, due to the current war situation, their flight was canceled and at the moment they are unable to travel.

The situation is quite serious:

My mother has cancer and finished chemotherapy last month. Initially, her radiotherapy was planned to be completed by mid-April so she would be able to travel, but due to the war and disruptions in the healthcare system, it has been delayed and is now expected to continue until early May.

My father is at his 80s and had knee replacement surgery 2 months ago, so traveling is very difficult for him without support.

Swiss embassies in Iran is currently closed or not operational and they cannot go to neighboring countries like UAE for obvious reasons.

This is especially difficult because last year we already had to delay important family plans (including our wedding) due to the 12-day war, and now again everything is uncertain.

I live in Aargau with my partner (we are both EU citizens).

My questions:

Is it possible to extend or reissue their Swiss visa under humanitarian or force majeure circumstances from outside Switzerland? where should I contact for this matter?

Would it make sense for them to travel to Switzerland close to the end of their visa validity and then apply for an extension here due to medical reasons?

Has anyone done something similar, or contacted Swiss cantonal migration offices in advance in such situations?

Any experience with how Swiss authorities handle these kinds of exceptional humanitarian cases?

I’m especially worried because it would be very stressful and risky for them to arrive with only a few days left on their visa and then try to solve everything under time pressure.

Any advice or shared experience would really mean a lot right now.

Thank you 🙏

Pavillon simone weil in Geneva

Have you heard about the Simone Weil Pavilion at the Sicli Pavilion in Geneva?? It’s absolutely insane; I don’t understand how the authorities allowed such an event to happen. Not only is there a massive waste of materials and a major fire hazard with all that cardboard, but above all: an open bar with free, unlimited alcohol? It goes against every single prevention measure for alcohol and addiction. Do you know if there’s a way to report this?

Did we get Tourist Taxed? Are dine-in prices actually usually more expensive than prices on UberEats?

**Edit: thanks for all the quick and detailed explanations, I didn't consider the different tax structures. Good to know I wasn't scammed! I've had an amazing trip so far in this beautiful country.**

Just had dinner at Mekong in Chur. Am a tourist from the US, where, in almost every restaurant, prices on UberEats are higher than the dine in prices.

We were handed English menus, and then the reverse appeared to be true. On UberEats, a Roter Curry mit Poulet is CHF 27.90, while dining in it's CHF 29.50. Similarly a Pad Gai Met Mamuang is CHF 27.90 on UberEats, while dining in it's CHF 29.50.

One of the waitresses explained to me that this is usually the case for most restaurants in Switzerland because dining in is taxed differently than take away, but this didn't make sense that UberEats would actually be cheaper than dining in, especially with Uber's take.

I then checked the takeaway menu on their website, and the differences were even more egregious. A takeaway Pad Mee – Weizennudeln is CHF 25.90, while our dining in version was CHF 29.50. A takeaway Rind Grüner Curry is CHF 25.90, while our dine in version was CHF 32.50.

We still decided to eat there after seeing these differences because we were craving Asian food, the restaurant had good Google reviews, and there weren't many other options, but I want to know if we got tourist taxed or if this is really the norm.

For reference, they did offer to show us the German dine-in menu, but I declined because I just wanted to go home at that point. They also said their takeaway options were fewer than their dine-in options, which is true on UberEats but not true at all on their website takeaway menu.

Website: https://www.mekong-chur.ch/take-away/

UberEats: https://www.ubereats.com/store-browse-uuid/a4288818-f216-53cd-a560-52ab0bad595c?diningMode=DELIVERY

Proof of higher prices attached.

Frais de Recouvrement Art 106 CO Payment?

Hello everyone here. I just moved to the French speaking part of Switzerland around one year ago so I'm quite new to this.

I received a payment reminder bill from a company called "D-collect". Turned out that it was assigned by a medical testing lab called "Genesupport" that was associated with one of my medical checks in my local hospital. Usually my medical bills would charge me through my health insurance, so I forgot to pay for it at that time.

In the reminder bill D-collect is charging me for a "frais de recouvrement art 106 co". I did some search here and it seems that it's a term for the damage caused by late payment. I sent an email to D-collect for justification why I need to pay for it, but I received no reply. At the same time, I got in contact with Genesupport through email, and they sent me the original receipt.

I paid the amount of money for the original bill and its interest, but I received another payment reminder bill today from D-collect telling me to pay for this "frais de recouvrement art 106 co". Can I continue ignoring it? I've sent another email for Genesupport to ask whether they've received my payment, and the justification for this "frais de recouvrement art 106 co".

Any suggestions what other things I can do? Thanks in advance!

Received cantonal scholarship – moving to another canton before finishing last exams. Will I have to pay it back?

I’m in my last semester at university and received a scholarship from my canton. The money has already been paid out to my account.

I’m moving to a different canton in June, which is also when my last exams are. I have a legal obligation to notify the scholarship office about any change of circumstances, which I will do.

Is there any risk they will ask for the money back just because I’m changing cantons?

How hard is it to go from USA to Switzerland working on Aircraft

I’ve worked on planes for about 9 years, previously 6 years in the U.S. military (hated it) then almost 3 years for Boeing (love it) but have been wanting a big change. Has any American done this or any Swiss person want to give me a little insight? I would greatly appreciate it.

FAMH Certification

Hello, I am a non-EU MSc by research student in medical immunology & clinical biochemistry and I am currently planning to take a medical/clincal PhD in Switzerland. While I was scouting for possible programs to apply to, I stumbled on the FAMH website explaining what the training program is and it fits to my long term career plans.

I'm wondering if there is anybody in this sub that is/knows someone currently taking this program that could give me insights on how the program works? I've scanned through the documents and I have an educated guess on what the documents say (I can't understand fluent German or French yet) as I plan to include this as a motivating reason to my Swiss PhD applications.

Thank you to anyone with leads on this! :)

Considering changing my study path

In september I started a Bachelor in Computer Science at a fachhochschule. Now it’s been 4 months that I’m wondering if I should change my path or not.

I’m having a really bad time to enjoy all the subjects except from those regarding math (such as calculus, linear algebra, discrete math) and physics, which I love them and I can spend a lot of time on those.

I don’t have that excitment to learn more of the various courses, no interest at all (and yeah I never thought of feeling this way before since I did an apprenticeship in the same field, even tho it was a bad one in terms of what you learn). I feel like there’s too much focus on programming (especially the 2nd and 3rd year), and while I see the potential and how useful it is, I’d prefer it as a side thing, not the main focus.

So now I’m in a position where I have good grades on the math subjects and physics (over 5), and bad grades in those regarding informatics as a whole.

There are other reasons such as a bad teaching in some subjects, but I don’t want to go too much in depth on this.

I’d really like to study physics (it fascinate me A LOT, I really like to know better how our universe works and interacts…then I also love astronomy/astrophysics). I know the EPFL has the CMS year before the bachelor, and I’m looking forward to it. Not scared of the difficulty, since I think that with hard work and dedication you can do it.

But…my situation is a bit…heavy.

I lost my dad a little over a year ago, that event put me and my mom in a difficult situation financially speaking. She doesn’t work (and doesn’t want to, even tho she’s followed by a psychiatrist because her mental health got worse after my dad’s death, which is fair and understandable) and she’s under Assistance. For me, I’m doing 2 side jobs to increase our budget (doing math lessons and food delivery), while studying.

I tried to talk with her about the idea of doing the EPFL, but it’s impossible to discuss with her and literally told me that I’m not able to do it, that the language is a problem (I live in Ticino), where do I get the money (did all the calculations, and I can do it with a cantonal scholarship without any problems, if the canton accepts it) and all those heart warming words that a son wants to listen.

I really need to change my life, I want to go outside my comfort zone and put myself in a condition where my main focus is to study without all the worries of life, my mother’s thoughts and so on.

So after this long post, what do u think I should do? I really have to read some suggestions.

Sorry for the long post

Non-EU L permit timeframe

Has anyone applied or had their employer apply for an L permit in Bubendorf (Canton Basel-Landschaft)? If so, how long did the process take. We are trying to plan our trip in Europe for mid/late June but we don’t know if that’s realistic or if the permit/visa will take longer than that. Thanks!

How hard is it to shift from Software development to a different job?

With the looks of the current job market for software developers, how hard is it to shift to a different job?

I’m a web developer and seeing how hard it is to apply for jobs currently I was wondering if there is good paths to shift to, with higher chances of being hired? I have thought of Elektroniker but I’m not sure how deep I’ll have to learn or if they hire people with barely-to no knowledge. Or if you have any other path suggestions, I’m all ears.
